How many of you like making miniatures? I have made so many bed quilts and large wall hangings, I am running out of room. I once did a 12 inch block with 375 pieces and won a challenge; I quite enjoyed it. If you like miniatures what are some of your fave sites? TIA!
|
I've admired many, but have never made one. My eyes are not that large to make a mini! I seem to have fumble fingers just working on a full sized pattern! Could you post some pictures please?

I like making miniatures - I finally finished piecing a checkerboard top last night - trying to get all the seams to match just about made me crazy. I'm going to use black and red buttons as the checkers and embroider and applique the 3½" parchment border around the checkerboard part.
Here are some miniature flying geese quilts I made for a doll - the first one was too big for the doll, so I re-made it. The strips of flying geese are paper-pieced and I would definitely stick with paper piecing for patches this small. The finished geese are about 3/4" x 1½" Flying geese mini's in 30's prints - this is after laundering, so it's nice and puffy-looking. :) The smaller one had too much quilting in it The larger one drapes better, but it was fun to quilt this small one, anyway. :) |

I just finished this miniature for a swap. She hasn't seen it yet, so don't tell I posted it here!! :-) I have made 15 miniatures for the doll quilt swaps on here. They are so fun to do, and I usually try some new technique on the miniatures to see if I like doing it or not.
|
I do! Love my minis.
|
I like making miniatures. I'd be interested in seeing your 12" block with 375 pieces, and congratulations on winning the challenge. That probably gets you inspired. Most of my miniatures are made from paper piecing patterns - some from books and some from old software i have from Sew Precise.

I'm working on a GFG with 3/8" hexagons.
Here you go for a size comparison. It's all hand pieced and will be hand quilted. |
JLJack, your swap mini is beautiful too! I think it'd be hard to give away!
|
Jennifer, please keep posting pictures of your GFG progress. That will be amazing!!
|
I love those little minis, but I'm not skilled enough to do one.
|
My quilt guild brought in George Siciliano & I took his workshop. My first attempt at foundation piecing and a mini. It was a challenge, but I will finish my mini! Each 3" block has 40 pieces in it. It will finish at about 15" square, made of 16 blocks total.

INSANE!!! http://www.georgesiciliano.com/ And all the quilts shown are gorgeous. I wish I had the patience. |
jljack-Your mini is lovely! I find that making miniature quilts is so rewarding. I can create without having to use lots of fabrics and I just don't need more quilts, either. It is an opportunity to make any style I've never tried before. I use the doll quilt swap to try something new and it's a way to learn new techniques. My friends probably don't know what to do with mini quilts, but I use them seasonally and for many small decor ideas. They are charming to me. polyparrot- Love your quilts!
|
I made pineapple blocks in EQ7 that'll finish at 2" finished. I'm cutting them and going to use my itty bitty scraps on that.
So far for the GFG I've got over 100 hexies basted, but they're not all together yet. Hopefully soon. |

I'd love to whip up some mini projects. The smallest blocks I've worked with were 30 some-odd pieces in 4.5" finished blocks....but my favorite parts were tiny stars about an 1" square in the centers of a few.
|
Where do you all find patterns for them??
|
You can find them online and here on the board. I have numerous magazines with patterns.
|
Retro - let me guess - that was a Dear Jane block huh? :D
|
Unfortunately, I don't possess the block anymore and I didn't take a pic *sigh*.........wish I had.!
|
Love all the minis!! I used to make a lot of them when I started quilting, all by hand.
While cleaning out my sewing room I found several, wow are they small! I would like to do another one, really fun! :) |
We have a miniature section in the Topics Lists. I manage it and if you post a miniature you can add it to the Miniatures section.
Here is the link http://www.quiltingboard.com/virtual...jsp?vsnum=1008 You will find a lot of good inspiration here. |
I found a lovely golden metal Victorian doll bed, about 7 inches long and the headboard is about 4 inches high.
I'm making the whole thing, mattress, sheets, pillows and a tiny crazy quilt of soft velvets. I've just put a backing in an embroidery hoop and can add whatever I happen to run into to it till it's finished. I want it to cover over and under the pillows and touch the floor on both sides. Sorta like one I saw as a child at an aunt's house, which was a long time ago, but I thought it was so lovely I can still remember it. |

I've made a few minis.
If you want patterns, Cindy Edgerton has some here: http://www.averyspecialcollection.com/shop/index.htm They're paper pieced, and her patterns come preprinted on tissue, like clothing patterns. drawn up in EQ and paper pieced. a Cindi Edgerton pattern. The patches are 1/4 wide |
Never made one but would like to know what the measurements should be.
|
For me a miniature is anything under 24" square.
|
Quite frankly, with the amount of money we have to pay for material I think it is a waste of time and money to make a miniature quilt unless it was for a useful purpose such as a place mat. I prefer to make larger items such as a full quilt. However, if it was an art quilt to be used as a wall hanging or framed, then it takes on a different dimension.

This is paper pieced - alot of fun - alot of work. When I started it took me 2 hours to do a 2 inch block! You can take a look at it here and put on your sunglasses! http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-62280-1.htm

I love mini's and just bought a book "Paper Pieced Mini Quilts. I printed patterns last night and hope to start one today. Good way to use scrap fabric.
