mixing batiks with other fabrics?

I'm gathering fabrics for a quilt that needs a lot of different ones. I have quite a few batiks - is there any reason why these shouldn't be included with non-batik fabric?

No - I do it all the time as you can see on my avatar quilt. I think this is one of the old wives tales that persist. I believe, although I don't hand quilt myself, that some batiks can be a little more difficult when hand sewing due to their tighter weave. Happy quilting :)

batik's are just another cotton quilting fabric. many of us who use them a lot mix them all the time- many of my quilts including that newest bargello have many batiks mixed in with regular prints, fairy frost's and solids. you might want to check them to make sure they are not going to bleed (some batiks tend to bleed more than others) prewash them- beyond that they do not need any special considerations- most of my quilts contain quite an assortment of fabrics- including batiks - I've even mixed flannels with regular cottons and batiks without any problems.

Thankyou - off to dig out that stash of batiks!

I mix them all the time, they are just another fabric to use in your design! I do pre-wash them as many batiks can have a tendency to bleed with excess dye however.

My "rule" is that if it looks good together, use it together.

Yup, I mix them all the time, too. Have fun.....

Edyta Sitar has built a successful business based on mixing batiks and traditional cottons. Her quilts and fabric choices are amazing.

of course you can mix them. I do it all the time.

Yes, I mix them up all the time. Love the bright colors that are produced in batiks.

Mix 'em up! I, like all the others have said, do it all the time. I also hand quilt and have no issues with that aspect either. Enjoy.

There shouldn't be any problems but remember one thing, not all batiks are all cotton, some are rayon which has a drape to it. I love batiks and have a whole quilt made with the cotton one.

Me too. Sometimes only batiks will give me a shade of the color I need. And, I love Edyta Star. That woman's color and print size sense is amazing.

I love mixing batiks with other fabrics, and do so in just about every bed quilt I make. I think you will like the end result.
