Yes, I've mixed batiks with regular quilter's cotton fabrics. Usually, I'm pairing the batiks with a neutral, either a white (tone on tone) or off-white because I love the contrast.

I also mix them, though I don't hand quilt. If you have hand quilted batik before and were satisfied, I would think you would be satisfied if you mixed batiks with regular quilter's cotton fabrics. I have read that some hand quilters find them more difficult to get a needle through. Or, if you haven't hand quilted them, you might experiment and see how it feels. As far as piecing the two in the same quilt, I have never had a problem doing that.

I have made several quilts with both together and hand quilted them. No problems here.

There is such a variety with batiks, and some can really shout. I've mixed them with traditional cottons but only when the batik is subtle and the colors are perfect. With GFG, though, since the fabrics are so individual, I'd bet a lot of them would work.

I have mixed them too but I used a machine to piece and quilt so can't comment on the hand piecing and quilting.

I do mix them, but I find when matching seams, the batiks don't have as much "give" to them as the cottons

I've been wondering about this as well. I'm planning a DWR for my daughter and want it to be very neutral throughout. I started collecting batiks but soon realized I'd spend the next 100 years trying to get enough "neutral' batiks. So now I'll feel more confident using "regular" cottons. Thank you all. It's nice knowing other quilters have the same questions I do (and take the time to ask them) ;) Joyce in Delaware

I mix them all the time and love the results.

I mix batiks and regular cotton fabrics all the time in my quilts. I don't hand sew anything if I can avoid it.
The quilt in the photo has both types of fabrics. Sharon |
I machine piece them mixed together all the time and then hand quilt. No problems.
