Here's the link I follow http://modajustonestar.blogspot.com/
The designers also have a spot & there are LA quilters who are sharing their info (you can find them by googling Just One Star)
Hope this helps ;)

The *block* is not copyright, just the written instructions and graphic they have created. I have made this star for years, have even written instructions myself. Use it as you wish, but you probably shouldn't hand out the pattern or teach a class with it.

I'm talking about the layout, stars down in columns and the star fabric across the top. If I copy that layout am I in trouble?

Actually, that pattern IS a copyright pattern by Brannock and Patek who are fabric desiners for Moda. They put out the pattern months before Moda had their push for stars for soldiers.
So, as it's become very recognizable thru Moda's effort, I'd be very careful how you use it....not for monetary award in a show, not for a class unless the pattern purchase is required, not for making a quilt to sell, etc.

Obviously it's meant for you to make one for your own use, though.

I was thinking more in the line of donation quilts such as Quilts of Valor. Thanks for the clarification.:)

I was lucky enough to get to quilt two quilts for this project and yes they made the 100 needed for flag day. They are in the process of finishing the other quilts at this time. There are eighteen stars in each block and yes they got well over 15000 stars. I am sure you can read about it on Moda's site.
