More Harbor Freight tools I need?

1 Attachment(s)
Tomorrow are quilt group is going on an outing and we are going to stop at HF. I have some tools from there that have been recommended on this board that I can't live without...LOL...but I know there are more that I've read about but have not made note of. Attached is a pic of the ones I love...my FAVORITE is the screwdriver that makes life easier on the sewing machine. I also have their rotary blades and have some that are great and then some that will do in a pinch.

Can anyone clue me in on some that I should buy tomorrow? Thanks, Pat

I can't remember right now all the things I've bought from them!
I go and browse; thinking outside the box.
They do have tool boxes (great for "sewing case"), great T-rulers (for squaring), scissors (for cutting things other than fabric), etc.
Look for anything that strikes your imagination.

Tartan 01-13-2013 07:01 AM

Someone posted about the suction cup handles that are made for moving glass are good for rotary rulers and really good for the thick long arm quilting rulers.

Thanks...the T-rulers are one of the things I read about and forgot to look for.

14" scissors, $3.99, great for batting.

Pat, what is the thing on the far right in your picture? Thanks, Laura

It's a telescoping wand with a magnet on the end.

Peckish 01-13-2013 12:30 PM

HF has 2 little stubby screwdrivers, one flathead, one Phillips head, that I find invaluable when working on my machine. The handles are large and easy to grab.

jlm5419 01-13-2013 02:08 PM

A magnetic tool (or knife) rack.

SewExtremeSeams 01-13-2013 02:32 PM

Great place to shop for quilters! Didn't know about those scissors. Thanks.

I'm guessing it's a magnet on a pivoting head. If she doesn't have a magnet yet, she needs to get on of the telescoping kind. Beautiful for pins that need to slide alllllllllllll the way under the table.

Lormito 01-13-2013 02:43 PM

Did you find those brushes there? They look perect for cleaning lint out of a machine.

Yes, Grannie, your right - it is the telescoping magnet...super for those pins that invariably land under the table or bed.

Yes Lormito...got the brushes there and they're great for cleaning the machine.

That sounds like something I could use, for sure.

I've been pulling out lint with q-tips. A long skinny brush would be ideal, but I NEVER remember it when I'm out shopping.

I use an old (clean) mascara brush. I'm cheap!

sewnsewer2 01-13-2013 04:05 PM

A small flashlight works wonders.

I don't wear makeup. But I am going to see if I can find the hummingbird feeder brush someone gave me once---------which I never used for that purpose since I just bleach the heck out of the feeders then rinse a dozen times.

Handcraftsbyjen 01-13-2013 07:03 PM

If you are a longarmer, they have long large magnets that you can put on your belly bar to hold the quilt top in place.

Belfrybat 01-13-2013 07:20 PM

45 mm rotary carpet cutter blades. Work as well as the name brand ones and are only $1.99 for a two pack.

What do you use the little brushes for? Lady at guild today said not to use pipe cleaners to clean electronic machines as they can mess with sensors. magnetic things, etc.

Please see my comment.

My last trip to HF, I bought a pair of really small pliers. They come in handy when removing a needle. I have also bought large clamps. They hold quilts together when sandwiching and keeps them straight.

The little suction cups are great for holding rulers in place. On Saturday I saw rubbery kitchen floor mats that are great for muffling sound (I'm in an apartment) and to keep machines like sergers from "walking". I think cutting a little chunk off might be good to keep pedals in place too. They had those flashlights that strap onto your head on sale, too. Not only are they wonderful in a black out, but they sure help if you drop a pin or needle on the floor and have to crawl around to find it. For $2 how can you go wrong? Have fun!

deedum 01-14-2013 04:32 AM

Yep, the long long scissors are great for cutting batting, I find I can use them for other things to cut like tulle also. Worth the money. I have the little orange suction cup handle, use them all the time. Don't forget there is usually a coupon you can get a little discount with and usually a free little flashlight or scissors at the time. It usually is in the newspaper or I think you can. Get one online. I see them everywhere. I use little scraps pieces of squares of fleece and long tweezers to clean out my lint. Works well.

gramacheri 01-14-2013 04:54 AM

Have you thought about a mallet? I have one that I use when I have lots of seams coming together in one place and it makes the "stack" a little flatter!

tymia 01-14-2013 05:06 AM

Sunnye, what is the ring with three things attached, second from last item?

Grandma Kathy 01-14-2013 05:10 AM

What is the screwdriver called? Planning a trip to our local Harbor Freight this week.

skjack 01-14-2013 05:47 AM

I used the flashlight on a strap for your head when we had a power outage before Christmas and I needed to finish a customer's binding. it worked great even better than having a light It put the light right where I needed it. I use it when working on black.

AlienQuilter 01-14-2013 06:07 AM

I also bought the large and small suction cups. If you can't find them be sure to ask where they are. If I remember correctly they were with the bathroom shower area.

The blades are in the utility knife/carpet tools area. Last time I stocked up I got them for $1.49 for a package of two.

I also bought two of the stubby srewdrivers. Lots easier to hold on too.

Bought the magnetic pin holder for $2. I think its actually for screws and nuts and nails.

Don't forget to look at the gardening gloves - great for machine quilting. You could snip the tips off the thumb and pointer finger so you don't have to constantly remove them when dealing with the needle and thread.

We are fortunate to have a HF nearby. But, I have to wait until DH can go with me or he will pout. But, he does get a kick out of what I buy from there for my quilting.

craftiladi 01-14-2013 06:10 AM

Love, love the magnet dish, what is the little key ring of brushes called, I looked on their web site but didn't see them.

I use my kitchen tenderizer mallet.

I've got one of those somewhere. It does come in handy for seeing the needle better when changing needles or threading needles. But since I don't know where mine is---------it's not doing me any good right now. Oh well.

marymay 01-14-2013 07:27 AM

Oh look at their tool rolling cases.Men use them to carry their tools in. Lots of space great for your sewing machine. I bought mine for 19.99. Cheaper then buying a sewing machine case from Wal Mart or JoAnns

judykay 01-14-2013 07:28 AM

They have a real nice and inexpensive T square for squaring up you quilts. The pin bowl is one of my favorites and I need to get another one, I only have two.

This thread has been really fun to read! I learned a lot about handy items to have today, thanks everyone!

Grandma Peg 01-14-2013 09:50 AM

Might have to go with DH the next time he goes there. Use the blades and they work great. Thanks for the info.

Harbor Freight and any hardware store is like a fabric store or book store for me. Can't spend enough time in them! Always thinking outside the box in those stores. My oldest son always gives me a gift card for my birthday or Christmas, Mother's Day etc to Home Depot or Lowes and younger son gives one to Barnes and Noble. Their wives had a fit at first but finally gave in to sons' ideas. I just wish my daughter would get on board to gift cards and hers can be from fabric stores LOL.
