Also, if you are painting.wrap your brush or paint roller tightly in foil and just unroll it when you need it . they do not dry out if wrapped tightly. I;ve done this for many years.

that was interesting thank you for sharing

LOL good idea!

patsyo56721 01-31-2011 04:29 PM

I have used the tip forsharpening scissors and it works.

fabric whisperer 01-31-2011 04:35 PM

yup, I've done it for the kids crafting scissors for years... my gramma showed me that trick well over 35 years ago. I've got about 5 rotary blades that I've saved for when the kids do scrapbooking / papercrafting / cardmaking projects... I may try and sharpen one of those :)

My hubby is all zappy right now, so I will definitely try the dryer trick ~ we're tired of him zapping us!

BettyGee 01-31-2011 05:36 PM

I still call it "tin" foil, gives my age away; but, thanks for the tips. Learn something new every day. Love the brown sugar hint the best, who knew?

judy_68 01-31-2011 05:38 PM

I can't wait to try these ideas.

I do this but I also put it into the refrigerator. You can keep it there for a couple of days. Just wrap it tightly.

Wow........everything you always wanted to know about aluminum foil but were afraid to ask. Well, not quite...lol...but interesting stuff! I especially liked the dryer hint. Thanks! That's one I will probably use.

snicktrain 01-31-2011 06:27 PM

Who'd a thunk it. The laundry sounded interesting to me. Well, it all did, actually.

JT 01-31-2011 06:36 PM

If you don't like the dryer sheets, check out the "dryer mate" balls. They are plastic balls with knobs on them. I got them at Menards, and have been using one of them for over 6 months.

Nanamoms 01-31-2011 07:02 PM

Like idea about ball of foil in dryer to eliminate static cling.

annette1952 01-31-2011 07:11 PM

Very interesting! Thank you!

Caroline S 01-31-2011 07:16 PM

I have always sharpened my kitchen scissors by cutting aluminum foil. But learned some new uses from the video. My ironing board gets aluminized tomorrow and will try the foil ball on the next dryer load. Thanks for posting the link.

The grilled cheese sandwich idea reminds me of of one of Johnny Depp's early movies, "Benny and Joon". It's a great one to rent and often comes on TV.

I do the same thing, but I use those plastic grocery bags, put the roller in and wrap. You can also put the paint roller pan (with paint), inside the plastic bags, push it down into the paint and refridgerate until needed again. Works like a charm.

DON'T EVEN GO NEAR ALUMINUM FOIL WITH A ROTARY BLADE! iT WILL MAKE IT DULL INSTANTLY!
It works for scizzors because they intersect two flat blades,
The rotary is a double sided pointed blade. JP

I better not try.

That toasted sandwich thing is VERY old...we used it in our dorm rooms in college..and I am VERY old. Funny about the ironing board (first, did you notice that there was no pad on that ironing board LOL) I asked this board recently about how they cover their ironing board...got good responses. I ended up making my own cover and I love it, but I put a layer of aluminium foil between the two commercial pads that were left over from previous covers I had purchased. It is the best cover/padding I have ever had! I am going to try the foil ball in the dryer today. I use the balls someone else mentioned..they soften, but do not de-static! And if I cannot keep using the same ball of foil, it will not be in my frugalistic bag of tricks.

You can clean sterling silver with aluminum foil, water and washing soda. Pierce the foil for better solution movement. Lay the foil in a tupperware sandwich-size container. Fill 3/4 with water. Add 2 tablespoons washing soda (not baking soda) and stir. Set your sterling silver in the solution until the oxide is released. 30 seconds or so. Then rinse and buff.

Do not use on silver that has marquisite or darkened designs (eg. lettering).

This works - I used Calgon

kathidahl 02-01-2011 11:35 AM

I can report that the foil in the dryer does NOT take away the static..tried it out this morning..

It said to wrap the hard brown sugar in foil, put in in a preheated 300º oven for 5 minutes and it will crumble easily.
