Great info! BTW - your avatar is absolutely beautiful!

kanakama 01-30-2011 03:04 PM

Very interesting. I'm going to try some of those things. Thanks for sharing.

PWinston 01-30-2011 03:10 PM

Who would have thought? Think I'll make a grilled cheese sandwich for lunch while I am sewing. That way I don't have to stop and go to the kitchen. Very inventive.

Cyn 01-30-2011 03:13 PM

Thanks. I'm going to do some of these :)

Ramona Byrd 01-30-2011 03:34 PM

My main use for foil is to cover celery and other veggies with it. Makes them last and last. Don't know why, it just does.

CoyoteQuilts 01-30-2011 03:41 PM

Cool! I wonder if you need to use a new sheet of foil in every load. If not, that sure would cut down on the expense of fabric sheets.

joan_quilts 01-30-2011 03:50 PM

I want to see if it really does sharpen scissors!

quilterd 01-30-2011 04:09 PM

I'm gonna try it on scissors & maybe some of the others too

GwynR 01-30-2011 04:21 PM

No way I am touching my fabric scissors to test this, but the kitchen ones are getting dull....

joyceinoh 01-30-2011 04:23 PM

What I want to try is the fabric softener,
Using the stuff you spray in the dryer not only makes me itch, the scent gives me a headache.

CristyK1 01-30-2011 04:28 PM

It does work on scissors. I've used foil to shapren scissors and punches for years. That and wax paper to unstick them.

Deb watkins 01-30-2011 04:34 PM

Here is another thought...if it will sharpen scissors, what would it do for our rotary blades???

dkabasketlady 01-30-2011 05:02 PM

What innovative ideas! I'm going to try some of these out!

klgreene 01-30-2011 06:47 PM

That was great.....I'm especially going to try it on some scissors. I'll leave the grilled cheese to someone else. lol

AudreyB 01-30-2011 08:46 PM

Thanks! My mom is allergic to the dryer sheets. I'll try the aluminum foil ball on her clothes.

Good thought, Deb!

AnnieH 01-31-2011 01:33 AM

My DH is sceptical about the scissor sharpening. My son has done the cheese toastie thing, made me laugh loads when he showed me.

knlsmith 01-31-2011 02:23 AM

I have used it for scissors. Not my quilting ones, and it seemed to work great!

Conartist1945 01-31-2011 02:44 AM

I Loved this! Thanks

Calzo 01-31-2011 05:42 AM

My mother showed me how to make grilled cheese sandwiches with a iron many (many) years ago so I could make a quick meal my college dorm room. Unlike kids dorm rooms today we didn't have microwaves and refrigerators.

I love the idea of replacing dryer sheets. I will definitely give that a try.

lillybeck 01-31-2011 07:28 AM

Some great ideas. I am going to try sharpening some scissors

Suzy 01-31-2011 07:38 AM

I have used it when my rotary blade needs a new edge when trying to finish a project, it really works, just make sure you are on your cutting mat when running it through the foil. I fold the foil approx. in 4ths and just run it thru until the foil is all sliced.

Suzy

tweezy50 01-31-2011 07:47 AM

I have used the foil thingy on my old pinking shears. Works on them too! Love the idea.

Sewing Grandma 01-31-2011 08:23 AM

And how about foil sharpening our sewing needles.

dixiechunk 01-31-2011 08:39 AM

Grilled cheese! How cool is that?!

steelecg 01-31-2011 09:16 AM

very cool

debbieumphress 01-31-2011 09:20 AM

Wow. Great to know. I like the sandwich idea. Make lunch while we sew.

try using Vinegar in your rinse cycle, it takes the extra soap out and so that makes the clothes softered [sp] and theres no smell,

Parrothead 01-31-2011 09:27 AM

I had heard of the ironing board thing and the toasted sandwiches. It works on any type of sandwich you want to grill or make into a "melt". Heard about it on a travel channel. Never heard of the scissor thing but I am going to try it. I have to use liquid fabric softener in my combo RV washer/dryer but someday I might have a regular one so will keep that in mind. I do not like the smell of some of the sheets.

Psychomomquilter 01-31-2011 09:34 AM

some I have heard before, but the other 3 was very interesting, will try on my dull sissors today... thanks for the info.

Psychomomquilter 01-31-2011 09:36 AM

hmmm gotta try the rotary blades too.

babyboomerquilter 01-31-2011 09:36 AM

I have learned something new today for sure.

bluteddi 01-31-2011 09:48 AM

I've done the Brown sugar, and the sharpening scissors with it... heard of ppl putting it under the ironing board cover ,,, never heard of the dryer thing.. and Now I"m hungry for a grilled cheese.... !

ladyredhawk 01-31-2011 09:50 AM

Now that you've mentioned it Deb, I think I remember reading awhile back on another forum that you can sharpen your rotary cutter by cutting through several layers of aluminum foil. It can't hurt to try once the blade is dull, so I think I'll give it a try next time. :D

dhanke 01-31-2011 11:46 AM

It sure couldn't hurt to try it on rotary blades. If anyone experiments let us know if it works. And thanks for the reminder that I'm out of aluminum foil and need to add it to my shopping list :-)
