Do you listen to music while you sew? Any certain types you enjoy listening to while you sew that you might not typically listen to? Share!

ginnie6 06-04-2010 12:32 PM

usually not. I sometimes will watch tv on the computer but most times I have nothing on so I can hear the kids. Now that its hot they can go to the pool and I leave the window open so I can hear them and check on them frequently.

ckcowl 06-04-2010 12:33 PM

YES!!! and the music varies WIDELY!!!

ckcowl 06-04-2010 12:37 PM

I listen to music in my sewing room usually something upbeat, sometimes country, sometimes rock, sometimes CD's, and i get more done, In the quilting room I have found that good music with a good ... flow ... to it really helps my quilting be smoother, it flows with the music.:)
smooth jazz, lots of instrumentals are good to quilt to with the long arm, it has to be something you really like though because you have to have it up loud to hear it over the machine ;)

CarrieAnne 06-04-2010 12:39 PM

I listen to it all day at work, so I kind of like the quiet! Or something on tv.

littlehud 06-04-2010 12:46 PM

I love music when I sew. I boot up Pandora on my computer and listen to soothing music when I piece and the Beach Boys and such when I quilt.

Jim's Gem 06-04-2010 01:03 PM

Most of the time I have the I-Pod playing with my Christian Music going. Sometime a mix playlist sometimes a specific artist.
Sometimes the I-pod is on full random and I get to hear a lot of country, some latin, some harder Christian rock than I want to hear (my kids have all loaded all of their music on our I-pod) Right now it is on a mix of Christian Music.

hazeljane 06-04-2010 01:09 PM

My iPod has at last count 10 continuous days of music on it.

Irish, rock, folk, latin, old swing and standards, bebop and later jazz, right now listening to Dvorak on Pandora. (cause it's still technically my work day, though I am done.)

I've been listening to a lot of Cuban music lately while I quilt. It's among my favorites.

sewcrafty 06-04-2010 01:16 PM

Soft rock, classical rock, easy listening and my CD's.

thequilterslink 06-04-2010 01:20 PM

Nope just the hum of my machine and all the thoughts of more quilts rambling around in my head.

That describes me to a "T"

geckogirl 06-04-2010 04:22 PM

It varies for me . . sometimes I listen to music (anything but rap) sometimes I listen to the tv or a movie and sometimes I just sit :-)

Sometimes my husband will even sit in the room and talk to me about his day :-)

thismomquilts 06-04-2010 04:26 PM

I have a CD player - I listen to classical, Bible being read, hymns, or country on the radio

quiltingfan 06-04-2010 06:06 PM

TV, since I quilt in the living room the tv is right there. Sometimes music.

seamstome 06-04-2010 06:10 PM

I listen to books on Audible. I have "read" 25 books that way this year. At an average of 10 hours a book that's alot of quilting!!!

When I am quilting with my GF we listen to music....XM 60's or 70' mix

Jingle 06-04-2010 06:12 PM

I love lots of music, I usually have HGTV on for the noise. When I listen to music I like to move around and that doesn't go well with sewing, I might stitch my fingers.

luv-e 06-04-2010 06:12 PM

Idina Menzel Broadway "Wicked"
Manaheimen Steamroller
Johnny Mathis

momymom 06-04-2010 06:17 PM

Depends on my mood. This week it's been The Irish Decendants. Sometimes it's Celtic, other times it might be the Eagles, or if I'm cleaning and want to get it done Meatloaf, loud and energitic. My kids have grown up with my music, and they sing along.

Pineapple Princess 06-04-2010 09:05 PM

I listen to audio books (currently Lord of the Rings and C. S. Lewis' Space Trilogy), 1940's swing, Irish folk music, classical, traditional Christian... Lots of different stuff! :)

Pineapple Princess 06-04-2010 09:07 PM

Right now I have my mp3 player on play all alphabetically - I'm halfway through the "c"s!

Ditto. "If" on the rare occassion that I do want some noise, I turn on the TV to keep me company. Usually though I like quiet.

Chasing Hawk 06-04-2010 10:12 PM

I have my Ipod hooked up to my Bose and I have a 18' Flat tv with a DVD player in my sewing room. I have to have background noise in order to work. It's a quirky thing that I have always done. I can't work in silence.

dkabasketlady 06-05-2010 07:37 AM

I usually listen to country if I don't have the tv on. My DH still works & this is the only company I have all day besides my quilt inspector, TIA!!! She has her own chair pad at the end of the sewing table in front of the window!

I pay an annual feee to MLB for all baseball games. I'm a NY Mets fan living in NH. Have the tv on to a game, listening while I cut and sew.

I had my son make me a half dozen CDs of songs by artists I like. No ballgame and I've listened to enough MSNBC for the day, I sew listening to music I love.

Luckynumber7 06-05-2010 08:53 AM

I LOVE music. I like a wide variety (never rap though). Sometimes I listen to my mP3 player, and sometimes the radio, it depends on if I want to listen to a specific artist or not, and if I'm tired of commercials.

craftybear 06-05-2010 08:51 PM

yes, I listen to country music

I do the same thing!!!!! Jodi Picoult, Tracie Peterson, Beverly Lewis, Richard Paul Evans, Wally Lamb (for sure), Nancy E. Turner.

Our library sells their old cd's and tape audiobooks and everytime I am there I can get three or four/maybe six or seven books (50 cents each) and I get lots of hours of enjoyment from them. I finished a Wally Lamb book (28 discs long). Now that's a lot of sewing!!!!! I have hundreds of audio books. Then I pass them on to a friend that is blind, and she passes them on to a friend up in Northern Minnesota and then it finally ends up at the Lion's Club for older people to listen to and enjoy. The only time I do not listen to a book when I am sewing is when I have to do math. I can't figure math and listen to a book at the same time. But I can sew - hand sew, machine sew. I cannot sew and talk at the same time - hand sew or machine sew. Funny - our little idiocyncrasies, eh? Edie

mountain deb 06-06-2010 04:47 AM

I work in a nursing home. You know them, the ones who have their tv cranked up. Give me my peace and quiet. Let me listen to myself, the dogs, the quiet, my muse and most especially to God, not particularly in that order. lol

scrappylouisa 06-06-2010 04:49 AM

I either listen to Native American Flute music or Oldie's But Goodies from the late 50's to early 70's.

bj 06-06-2010 04:52 AM

Depends on my mood. If I have it on, it's usually either blues or contemporary Christian or classic rock.

That's what I have on most often. We put the DVR in the sewing room, so if I heard something that I wanted to see, I just rewind a little. Love the pause button on the remote as DH likes to come yak with me every so often.

I don't normally listen to music while sewing, usually it's either HGTV, a game show or a favorite move that I've seen many times before, but music is a great idea. It would keep you away from looking at the TV and more focused on quilting. Hmm, something to think about. :D

Roberta 06-06-2010 06:33 AM

I have the radio on right next to my machine. I enjoy the 70's, 80's and 90's rock they play although my music is rock in the 50's. I do have to be careful because when a toe-tapping song comes on I tend to "tap" along on my pedal. Or if it's an especially lively tune I tend to speed up my stitching with not so great results.

VickyOH 06-06-2010 07:30 AM

I listen to books! Two hobbies at once.

bstanbro 06-06-2010 08:10 AM

I listen to the radio--NPR.

iltoaz 06-06-2010 08:29 AM

You will really enjoy quilting even more, honestly! Machine work, cutting, sewing, ironing, embroidering, you name it. Me and my books and my quilts. Edie

KarenBarnes 06-06-2010 11:50 AM

My DH got me a system for Christmas that connects to the Internet and I can vary the music from day to day without listening to commercials! Yay! It is called a squeezebox and it's great!

marymild 06-06-2010 12:08 PM

I like to listen to the Singing Quilter. Check out her website. She's a hoot! She has one of her numbers on Youtube, also, so you can actually hear her sing. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M0QjV8K4vQM

I absolutely do.... It just depends on my mood. I'd like to share w/you and all who read this - that there is a site called "Pandora." Type in: pandora.com and sign in - it is absolutely 100% FREE to listen as long as you'd like! Once you register - click on: "Create a new station" and type in an artist, a song, or even a type of music you want to hear, for example, Salsa, easy listening, contemporary, etc. and it will play all the songs in that category. The station plays for quite a long time and when you no longer hear the music, go to your computer and it will ask if you are still listening? Click "yes" and it will continue. You can create as many stations as you would like. Enjoy. Let me know if you have any problems. Marta
