Does anyone else get frustrated when quilters talk about their "studio" (they are usually the professionals).
I'm lucky enough to have a spare bedroom to work in and if only it didn't need a bed in it (buried as it is under mounds of quilting and embroidery "stuff") I might call it a studio. As it is, it's called the "sewing room"! I have a gate-leg cutting table which extends to 6' and a workbench (a door bolted to two sawhorses which my husband put together for me). Since I'm not very tall, he was able to make it a perfect fit for me to sit at and sew. When my children were still at home my "studio" was half the dining table (my husband had, and still has the other half to work on his stamp collection). What's your "studio" like? |
When I win the lottery   I will have a big and beautiful studio :D:D:D Until then, it will be my spare bedroom and the other portions of my home LOL
I wonder what an architect will think, when I say I want almost half of the house to be my quilting studio???? 8-)8-)8-) |
I have a spare bedroom where I keep my fabric/patterns/tools - I sew in our never used living room - we now use our family room for family stuff!! :) One day I'll have a real sewing room - where all my stuff can be in one place - oh - I cut and iron in the dining room.
|
My "studio" is my kitchen table!
|
I have a bedroom dedicated to my quilting/scrapbooking and I still work at the kitchen table - go figure
|
I heard once if you leave your ironing board up for more than 24 hours you can call it a studio. LOL

My mom used a spare room for years as her art studio. It wasn't until they moved that she finally got her "studio" - a two car garage. He built the 2400 sq.ft. one for him. I think I will stick to a spare room instead of being stuck out in a garage. No thanks. I have spread out around the house. Almost every room in the house has evidence of my hobby (and I don't mean finished projects!)

Being empty nesters we have the luxury of a bedroom that doesn't have a bed in it (2 people in a 4 bedroom house) So it has become office/sewing-craft room. We have a desk with 2 laptops on one side(my DH and I cannot work on one computer, tried to this year but it only lasted a week since when I want to be on the quilting sites he wants to be on the woodworking sites) and sewing cabinet and table for machine and serger on the other. It works for us and I do have a walkin closet used for storage, I love it. I love my kids dearly, but I am glad they all have their own homes now.
|
My studio is half of the Family Room. I have built in cabinets for my fabrics and a great sewing desk as well as a cutting table. My ironing board is never taken down unless I am taking it to a Quilt weekend at church.

I call mine a studio, tongue and cheek, just because I have a room with cabinets and design board just for quilting and sewing, and I designed the layout myself and have matching cabinets from Ikea. And it has great lighting. So I now consider mine a studio. LOL.
The room is my escape and has only my stuff in it. |
My studio is a small corner of the dining room that has my computer desk and sewing machine table. My fabric stash is up stairs in my bedroom. (The smallest bedroom in the house). That's OK because I love waking up looking at my fabric. I would love to have a room, but someone will have to move out. That's not going to happen so I sew very happily in my corner.
|
My husband promises that in our next house my sewing room/office/workout room will be bigger than the 9x9 room I'm in now. My dream is a 600 sq ft space, nice lighting, a seating area, ... oh yeah, a closet! this room is so small , there isn't room on the floor for a bed for my poor greyhound, she stands outside the door and whimpers .Anyway , for what it is, it's 'worked' pretty well, I think, an 8ft table on one wall with sleves above, 6 ft table on another , one wall of cabinets, and a 8'x5' design wall.
We make do. |
I moved my "studio" from my kitchen table to a $10 folding table in the living room. Got tired of putting the machine and everything up for each meal. Glad to have the table in the living room but it is a eye sore. That's okay because it is my space, LOL!

Let's all be jealous: My best friend/quilting partner has an entire apartment just for her crafts and quilting!! When my friend bought the house, it had a strip of small apartments on the adjoining lot that they also bought. Her husband made two of them into his workshop (one for large tools like table saw; and one for little stuff like painting supplies and hand tools) They use one for storage, and she has the last one for her stuff. A kitchen for coffee pot etc. bathroom, and the one bedroom and living room for all the craft stuff. She is so lucky! |
As you can read, just leaving your ironing board up constitutes a studio! Love that! That's all you need to do to have a wonderful studio. If you love to sew you could sew under a bridge with trolls and still call it your "studio." Just be nice to the trolls.

That is why mine is a studio. Now that I have my own quilting room the ironing board is always up. LOL

I guess I am the odd ball here because I do have a separate building in my backyard that is used for nothing but quilting and displaying my restored machines.
I am going to add on to it this spring so I can have room to move more of my collection out there and put a long arm in there as well. But I am far from a professional........its more recreational. Billy |
Mine's the extra/guest bedroom in our three bedroom house - if/when we have more kids (Cyrus is only 2), this room will become the second kiddo room. As it is now, it has hubby's computer desk and a full size bed that rarely gets used, on the other side it has my large (found at Goodwill on Sunday, WOOHOO!) sewing/cutting desk, and a design wall behind that.
I don't know what we'll do if we have to give up this room! It's one thing to have never had a sewing room, it's another entirely to have one and have to give it up! |
My 'studio' is now upstairs in the huge landing area at the top of the stairs. My 2 college age daughters still each have their bedrooms on either side. We live in an old (over 100 years) farmhouse that lacks plenty in the way of storage and character. Until a year ago, I sewed in my dining room. Now...I sew in my 'sewing' room...iron in one of my daughter's rooms and cut downstairs in my kitchen on my butcher block island. And...I really hate all that climbing up and down the stairs. I share my 'sewing' room with a sofa, TV, and seldom-used exercise bike. I have dreams of what my sewing room will be like if, and when, we decide to build a new house. LOL
|
My "studio" is the other half of one of the bedrooms that has hubby's computer and stuff in it. My computer is in the kitchen and has a TV receiver so I can compute and watch. But, back to the "studio", it is big enough for the machine table and another table but I do the cutting on the kitchen table, basting on the kitchen floor and ironing in the living room. I would love a big room lots of glass with enough $$$$ to have the right kind of glass and enough heat/air conditioning for perfect temperature year round. Of course it would also have storage and room for friends. Oh well, I can dream I guess.

I am very happy for those fortunate enough to have a studio...but I have a "space" in a small spot of my bedroom. My whole space is about 5 ft. wide lol. I do love seeing their pictures...it keeps me dreaming of my studio someday.

My "studio" is in the other half of my bedroom. Now I know that sounds small but this room is really two small rooms knocked into one. I have a 6 foot long table with the sewing machine on one end of it. And the cutting area is the other part. There is a shelf of sorts over it and that is where the plastic boxes are that hold my fabric. There is a long box under the table that holds the batting. It isn't fancy but I have room to do what I like.

Well, until just a moment ago, I didn't think I had a studio or a room... I admit to taking up half of the family room, and it's a mess. Not to sound snippy, but I care less and less what people think of looks, so if there is somebody who doesn't like what it looks like TOO BAD, lol. If a friend stops by and sees my mess before I can pick up, I'm okay - if they are my friend they aren't judging me by the pile of sewing I may or may not be working on.
Then I just found out that I must have at least one studio, possibly two. I've been known to leave the ironing board up - even in the kitchen - and I have a small ironing board next to my sewing machine in the family room. Older DD has moved out, lives in another state, younger DD is in college. I actually didn't want to move into one of their rooms as I like where I am - there's a TV here, I can toss laundry in (on other side of kitchen), keep an eye on dinner. If I moved, I'd be on the other side of the house. Then I finally suggested it to DH. Seriously, DD has spent maybe 4 nights here in the last year, for that little bit she could sleep on the couch, aerobed, whatever. DH says no, it's still her room. So in the family room I stay. |

Having lived in a studio aprtment before, I am proud to call my sewing space a studio ;-) It is where I study, play, and live. Don't let words make you crazy ;-)

Mines a spare bedroom-no bed-I call it my "Hidey Hole".
|
We knocked out a wall seperating 2 bedrooms to make 1 large room. LongArm on one end, cutting table & ironing board in the middle and sewing table on the other end. It works well. The grands camp out in the floor when they come to spend the night, or they can have the couch & love seat.

A 'studio' is a place where things are created like sculptures, paintings and quilts. So.....my studio is one of the spare bedrooms. It's only 12 X 12 but it holds my sewing machine & serger in a cabinet, my cutting table, my ironing board (not sure if it will even fold down anymore it's been up so long), two bookshelves that my DH built for me (they are still lacking the glass doors), magazine racks and thread racks hanging on the wall, a small flat screen TV hanging on the wall, and my design wall and peg board share the other wall. The closet is used for notions, etc. That's 'my room' and DH uses the study for his computer, etc. My computer is at the desk in the kitchen.

You can see some 'after pix' circa 2009 of my studio... its of course back at its before state... and yes, I do call it my studio....I'm sorry if that offends... you can see more images at the link below, follow quilting.. |
I will never have a studio. Studios are for seriously artistic people who can make money at what they do. I might have a sewing room one day. Sewing rooms are for people who like to sew for fun. No way will I ever be considered artistic.

I need space to work, I don't see how one can sew in a matchbox. I have seen some fantastic looking sewing rooms and creative little nooks some of you have. But, I need my space, I don't like clutter.
my "studio" my cutting area |
I grew up working in a studio. My father was a professional photographer. I lived at the "tu-dee-do" ( I couldnt say studio when I was really young)and played in the dressing room during the day. When I was older (11) I washed and dried black and white prints in the basement. So I love the idea of having a "studio' for my quilting, no matter how small it is. We are working to finish a basement room that DH and I will share. He will have his computer on one end and a closet for storage... I will have my studio and a closet for storage on the other end, plus a cutting table with storage. I have waited along time for my own studio, and there isn't anything else that I would call it!
