My brain is not working
2 Attachment(s)
I have pieced this "Simply Woven" pattern from Moda, but can not for the life of me figure out what to do for the quilting! All the seams are pressed open, so SID won't work. One LQS suggested Echo quilting inside each colored piece. Unless I try to free motion quilt that, it would be way to much turning of the quilt on my DSM. I thought of breaking the 12 inch blocks into 6 in sections. Basically I can't reach a satisfactory idea. I'd appreciate any suggestions you might have!

Love the colors...how about graffiti quilting. That's what I do, i love it so freeing. Good luck

I would use my white chalk to put a little marks to square off the bigger strips into the same size squares and do my orange peel in a continuous line of stitching over the whole quilt. The same design throughout would add texture without distracting from the design. Your lines look nice also but I hate having to constantly tie off threads while quilting.

I would do swirls across it, softening up the straight lines. Just a thought...

I wonder what it would look like crosshatched with diagonal lines. That would be easy to do on your DSM and would give texture. I'm just not sure whether the diagonal lines would detract from the lovely lattice.

Oh - just thought of this - how about a vine with leaves and flowers growing on the lattice?

I would just ditch it and then stitch a 1/4 seam inside the lines on the making it look like it is woven. You really want the piecing to be the star. I have this on my Honey Do List to make. I love the look of cross hatching but I try to avoid invisible thread with quilts that will be washed often.

To me, this seems like a prime candidate for an all over FMQ design, something with curves. But that's in part because I machine quilt on a HandiQuilter Sweet 16, and it isn't easy doing straight lines. If you'd rather do straight, I think huskyquilter's link looks beautiful.

Personally I would do some sort of design meant for borders or sashing down each ribbon and then maybe orange peel/continuous curves in the white squares. There are plenty of simple designs that you could use -- vines, feathers, curls, waves, etc. APQS has some nice videos on this sort of thing on YouTube.
You would only need to pick maybe 3 or 4 and keep using them. Or even just one. If you weave them over and under like the ribbons it would be awesome. |
