My castle needs help!
1 Attachment(s)
So after a day spent drafting this block, and many ripping and re-working, here is what I have. ( yes I know it's not perfect-the fabric was shredding after so much ripping!). The turret points obviously need help! The 2 on the right are flying geese-how do I get the points to be the same size? The point on the left was a failed attempt but I think I can just adjust the top point.....or is the center point ok being larger? Open to any and all suggestions! (The block is 12 1/2").......

jemma 08-16-2013 06:46 AM

why do they need to be the same -as long as the block fits where you need it--- looks like a castle to me --love the colours

francie yuhas 08-16-2013 06:51 AM

Looks fine to me! I'd put an embellishment on the top of the L turret...maybe use a pigma pen to put on a flag?

feline fanatic 08-16-2013 06:52 AM

I think the little girl that gets that block in a quilt will be thrilled. She won't know that the turrets are not all supposed to be different. I think it has great visual interest and you color choices are perfect for a "princess" quilt.

Yosamitesa 08-16-2013 07:07 AM

I LOVE it!!! Looks AMAZING!!!

barny 08-16-2013 07:10 AM

I think it's perfect, as is,. Not much is ever the same. It has visual appeal. I love it.

dunster 08-16-2013 07:14 AM

Looks good to me. Fabrics are perfect, definitely looks like a castle.

Tartan 08-16-2013 07:36 AM

It looks great to me! Embroider a little flag pole on the one turret and add a little appliqué triangle flag with her initial embroidered on it.

jillmc 08-16-2013 07:41 AM

OP here....thanks for the sweet comments! I thought you would all tell me to tear it apart and start over! ;). Embroidered flagpole with her initials is perfect! Originally, I was going to do several of these blocks with sashing-scrappy in pinks and purples cuz she is a purple-lover. Better ideas for a layout? Want to keep size down to a lap quilt size....will 9 patches look too busy?

CarolynMT 08-16-2013 08:11 AM

You could do different types of flags/embellishments on the different blocks, so each block is unique.

Some ideas:

Small ribbon sewn on and tied to look like bows on the turrets
Embroidered flags (I would do the initial on for center block)
Applique flags
Beads/Buttons sewn on like a weathervane, can get special buttons for that
Instead of the top of turret, you could sew on small lace at the part where the top meets the column
....that is all I can come up with right this moment. But you could easily embellish each of the 9 blocks differently. Let your imagination run wild, or if your daughter knows about this, get her to help ;) she might enjoy embellishing her special quilt

Do you mean 9-patch as an alternating block? I would find that distracting. I would find a fun print that goes with the concept of a castle (princess, dragons, trees, butterflies.....) and cut a piece for each alternate block. OR I would do an hourglass block between.

jillmc 08-16-2013 11:59 AM

Carolyn, cute ideas! Thank you! I agree, Mad, the alternating 9 patches would look busy. There are some cute princess fabric prints....hopefully I can find one with purples...and the hour glass blocks is a great idea as well. This quilt is for my 3yr old grand daughter-totally into princesses....hope to have this done for Christmas.

BETTY62 08-16-2013 12:12 PM

I love it and the colors are awesome. I think it makes a quilt unique when it has the special touch of the quilter. I'm looking forward to seeing your post of the quilt after you have it finished.

nhweaver 08-16-2013 12:59 PM

A castle has lots of different height turrets. I think this looks very nice.

tessagin 08-16-2013 01:06 PM

I think it looks fine. Now move onto the next one. Don't stress out on this.

Quiltngolfer 08-16-2013 01:57 PM

It looks great to me too. Colors are perfect. I'm impressed that you drafted it yourself. Nice work.

Luv Quilts and Cats 08-16-2013 03:09 PM

I like this block, the colors, the castle. The turrets don't have to be the same size. Keep going.

coopah 08-16-2013 05:40 PM

It's okay to have it not perfectly symmetrical. It actually adds charm to the castle! Maybe one turret is for Rapunzel and the other is for a lookout?

bearisgray 08-16-2013 06:17 PM

I really like the colors you used.

Maybe you could have horses or trees or mountains between the castles? So there might be only five castles alternating with 'scenery'? Fairy godmother? Jewel chest? Tiaras and scepters?

Girlfriend 08-17-2013 03:43 AM

I don't think you want them to be the same.....looks like you intended it that way!

Very, very cute!!

Retired Fire Chief 08-17-2013 03:44 AM

I think it is perfect just as it is!

EmiliasNana 08-17-2013 05:07 AM

This is going to be an adorable quilt for a precious three year old. Love what you did: pattern and fabrics are perfect.

Seaside gal 08-17-2013 05:18 AM

Looks great just as it is. Very cute.

lillybeck 08-17-2013 05:29 AM

I like this the way it is. Not everything on a building is the same. You made this unique and if it fits in your quilt then leave it.

wildyard 08-17-2013 06:45 AM

Another idea for alternate blocks; shields made from complimentary fabrics.

cpcarolyn 08-17-2013 06:56 AM

Your castle looks good to me.

quiltmom04 08-17-2013 07:17 AM

The turret points don't have to be the same - it's a design decision ! It's adorable! Don't fuss over it anymore - just keep going!

Phillyquilter 08-17-2013 08:43 AM

looks darn good to me.

FroggyinTexas 08-17-2013 10:07 AM

Me, too. froggyintexas

I absolutely love it, and the fact that you created it yourself makes it beyond fabulous. You are being hard on yourself, you have done a grand job with your creative mind.

maryellen2u 08-17-2013 11:21 AM

OMG All of these ideas are so totally cute for your princess quilt! I can't wait to see the finished project. It sounds like you've awakened the fairy Godmother in many a board member!

I agree! put a flag on the shorter one and "don't sweat the small stuff"........Looks good.

fangman 08-17-2013 12:55 PM

I think it looks great, and anyone would love it.

matraina 08-17-2013 01:32 PM

Can't answer your question but I love, love, love the block.

alfosa421 08-17-2013 05:01 PM

If you have the scraps Put a different fussy cut character in each doorway to show who lives there and color castle accordingly. She's gonna love it either way. Oh and maybe a dragon lurking somewhere. LOL

Lovequilting22 08-17-2013 05:47 PM

I think it's cute!

Chester the bunny 08-17-2013 06:43 PM

I think it's beautiful and any little girl who loves purple is going to love it.
If she is familiar with Rapunzel (spelling?) you could let her tresses trail out of one of the windows of one of the castles.
The possibilities are endless....don't get us started :o)

miriam 08-18-2013 03:13 AM

Don't all purple castles have a moat or a court yard with lots of flowers or trees?

gramacheri 08-18-2013 04:05 AM

AnnT 08-18-2013 04:10 AM

I think it looks great as is - I like the different turret points. But if you want to embellish them - off hand, I can't think of anything to add to CarolynMT's ideas.
