My children may need your help

I have set up a small wish list on amazon.com for Christmas. It consists mostly of small supplies and a Sizzix cutter. I have told my kids (they are grown) if they have any questions to ask you guys. After all you are the experts:)

And I have a question - which brand of basting spray do you prefer? I have tried twice. Once was great! Once I didn't wait long enough for it dry - not a good idea! So I would like to try basting spray to see how that works for me.

Thank you in advance for any help you may give to them!!

Tartan 12-13-2013 12:59 PM

My favourite brand of basting spray is 505 but I have not tried the new one yet.

BellaBoo 12-13-2013 01:00 PM

I gave up spray basting when I tried Elmer's School Glue.

azwendyg 12-13-2013 01:05 PM

I'm really happy with 505 spray. It sticks right away, and I have sometimes waited months before FMQ a spray-basted quilt with no problems at all.

Prism99 12-13-2013 01:10 PM

505 for me. I have not tried the newest one, though, that is supposed to be more web-like with less overspray (can't remember the name).

woody 12-13-2013 01:20 PM

I love 505 as well :)

Chaney Ranch 12-13-2013 01:26 PM

I've tried several but I now use only 505...it's great!

ann clare 12-13-2013 01:36 PM

505. I love, love, love it.

tapper 12-13-2013 01:45 PM

I glue baste small projects with Elmer`s school glue....love it!
I baste larger quilts with pins.

Tumdarra 12-13-2013 02:02 PM

I use Elmers glue also....not the stick, but the type in the bottle that is white. I find it works great, washes right out. I just had my machine cleaned last week and I asked Bob if there was a lot of "gunk" in there. He said no just flannel fuzz....so I told him I use Elmers glue to hold quilts together instead of pins etc. and he said it didnt seem to be a problem with gumming up; so that made me extra happy

Jingle 12-13-2013 02:03 PM

All I do is sandwich my quilts with safety pins. I am afraid if I use spray basting I would ruin my hardwood floors. I also don't know what effect it may have on my Cockatiel.

I like the June Taylor Basting Spray. I can get it at JoAnn's. Very little odor and sticks well but releases easily for moving.

There is also a tutorial some where about using Elmers School glue that you dilute and make a spray out of to use for basting. I haven't tried it yet (lost the thread and haven't searched). I think it would be much better environmentally if you wanted to search for the instructions.
peace

Dolphyngyrl 12-13-2013 02:20 PM

I have used 505, 101, and june tailor with success, they all seem to be about the same for me. I use all outside because i don't like the smell of any of them, they all irritate me inhalant wise. The only one I have that I haven't tried is sullivans, but I am sure its comparable. 505 is the most expensive in the batch. I got all of them from joanns online. I think mettler just came out with one as well

Neesie 12-13-2013 02:47 PM

Elmer's School Glue, for basting! I've no desire to breathe spray glue, into my lungs.

I think you are referring to Mettler Web Bonding Spray. It is fabulous. No odor and no overspray and no fine air particles that other basting sprays have that irritate the respiratory tract of some people. http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=3Wb7D3V...%3D3Wb7D3V4CKs

cathyvv 12-13-2013 07:49 PM

I use the brand sold at Walmart. It works fine.

marymay 12-14-2013 05:53 AM

I have tried 3 different sprays. I am using 505 never to go back to the others. 505 is the best I feel.

Kris P 12-14-2013 06:45 AM

I've never used elmer glue or 505. June Taylor basting spray from Joann's is what I've used for a few years and I'm very pleased with it.

scrapinmema 12-14-2013 06:57 AM

I've only used 505 and really like it

mighty 12-14-2013 07:00 AM

Elmers glue and 505.

Annie68 12-14-2013 07:27 AM

Looks like 505 wins the prize, also a fan.

Wonnie 12-14-2013 08:11 AM

Does 505 really hold a queen size quilt together long enough to scrunched it all around under a regular sewing machine to quilt it?

Letty 12-14-2013 09:03 AM

Yes 505, no problems at all.

teacherbailey 12-14-2013 10:20 AM

I use the spray in the pink and white can from Hancocks (buy with coupons, of course!). I don't remember the name and am out at the moment so I can't go look. I broke a needle sewing over dried glue once so I don't like it except for holding applique patches (I put the glue in the middle then sew the edges, of course).

caspharm 12-14-2013 10:20 AM

I actually like the Mettler Web Bond TA101. I was introduced to this at a quilt class. It has less odor and seems to hold with less product as well.

Yes. For a large quilt, I usually put some safety pins around the edge every foot or so to ensure that the edges don't come apart with handling (although if they do, it's easy to smooth them back into place).

DOTTYMO 12-14-2013 11:14 AM

I find 505 quick and easy spray iron quilt. The elmers glue is put on go to bed and wait.

My vote is for 505 also. Really like this stuff (except for inhaling that stuff). I work quickly & with a fan to keep the gases as minimal as possible.

mumzer 12-14-2013 02:09 PM

I use Elmers. Don't need a lot just a fine line will do it.

Sassylass 12-14-2013 03:37 PM

I love 505 as it does not stink but it sticks :)

My time 12-14-2013 08:41 PM

I've used 505 with great results but it's costly. I am an Elmer's school glue convert as well. The downside to school glue is waiting for the glue to dry. I just use it full strength from the squeeze bottle. Is this what everyone else does?

Ladibug 12-14-2013 09:02 PM

Amelia 0607 ( I tried once to post this to no avail so I will try one more time) I don't have a comment on basting spray but I do have one about your children. I think it is awesome that your kids think enough of you to come to this board to ask questions about a gift for you at Christmas time. Just what I have seen on here in the past the people on here will be more that glad and happy to help them. I want to wish you and your children and the members of Quilting Board a Merry and Blessed Christmas and a Happy and prosperous New Year!!!

I have used Spray and Bond, 505, and something in a pink can. The stuff in the pink can had horrible odor and, for me, was messy to use. I hated it. Spray and Bond (found at Walmart) is odorless and did a good job. My favorite is 505. It is odorless, repositionable and seems to have less overspray than the other two. It even held thick webbing together for sewing when DH needed his backpack straps modified. He was even impressed with 505! The company that makes 505 now has one called 606, but I haven't tried that one.

Cottage Dee 12-15-2013 04:23 AM

I love 505 as well.....and here is a great deal...http://www.sewforless.com
Do a search for 505 basting spray...a large can is 17 ounces and they are selling it for $13.34. The 8.5 oz can is $9.19. Joann's online sells an 11.7 oz for $24.49! I ordered 2 cans from Sew For Less, and it arrived in a few days. This was last week. I love having 2 large cans!! Oh oh, no excuse not to get some UFOs basted now...lol, those Irish Chain Quilts that I've been making from scraps are now on my list!

meanmom 12-15-2013 05:36 AM

I really like the 505 the best. I have tried the 101 and a few others and didn't like them nearly as well. I wait for a good sale and buy a bunch of it. I plan on trying the web stuff soon.

patsynel 12-15-2013 05:42 AM

505 is my choice.

psychonurse 12-15-2013 05:46 AM

I also use 505 spray and like it. it does not appear to gum up my needle or machine

And add some different threads to your list, you might have to tell them what weight, color etc. or they can get you a gift cert Atlanta supply co,( I forgot their newer name} bobbins pre wound. etc. don't forget to tell the what brand of thread you like.

mjhaess 12-15-2013 07:39 AM

I like the Dritz.

sept97 12-15-2013 07:47 AM

I've tried quite a few and the only one I didn't care for believe it or not was june tailor. The only place I can buy basting spray is joanns
