my DH says Ive turned into a monster...

I got a sewing machine for Mother's Day...and then it began. lol I have started quilting and lets say it has turned into an obsession. I can admit that...not sure about the monster part. I lay in bed and design whole quilts, tote bags, table runner, ect. So is this normal? I used to enjoy reading, watching tv but now all I want to do is quilt. I love it so :)

mike'sgirl 07-22-2012 11:41 AM

My family jokes that I need an intervention. I had to replace my iron today, ( I just bought one in January) and my dh is convinced that I am addicted to ironing, since I wore my iron out so fast, and cutting fabric. He is right, too, I am addicted and I don't want to change!

ArtsyOne 07-22-2012 11:43 AM

Welcome to your homies! I'd intended to spend the morning sorting out my bookshelves and instead I've alphabetized all of the quilting books and read every page of each one. Congratulations on getting a great Mothers' Day gift that will provide years of enjoyment.

sylviak 07-22-2012 12:06 PM

DH might as well get used to the "monster". It's an incurable disease! Did he buy the sewing machine?? If he did, it's all his fault, LOL!

JustAbitCrazy 07-22-2012 12:24 PM

Welcome to our world! :p Don't worry, you'll be very happy here! :p Dh will just have to learn to deal with it. He has lots of company, and if they can all do it, he can, too. Right? I think he'll see the value in your newfound hobby once you start making quilts for family gifts. My dh likes that. And how many men have hobbies which can provide nice family gifts? (camping, fishing, golfing sure don't).

I use to work 40+ hours a week for years. Since I don't work now I figure I can devote all that time to quilting if I choose. The family did just fine with me away from home those hours so they can do just fine with me in my sewing room those hours. I don't care what they think I should be doing anyway. LOL

I like how you think!!

kathdavis 07-22-2012 01:40 PM

At home, I hear comments all the time, like: "All you want to do is sew." "Sorry if I'm bothering your sewing." "Oh man, she is sewing again." They haven't gotten used to it yet, and I don't care.

Grandma Peg 07-22-2012 01:42 PM

You are obsessed but not a monster. It just kinda takes you over but with this addiction you have something to show for it at the end.

Pat625 07-22-2012 01:44 PM

I went from a very active work life to disability..The only thing I let interfere with my quilting is income...and I have a big enough stash that I can keep going!! Got rid of the husband, so nothing in my way now!! LOL

spokanequilter 07-22-2012 01:47 PM

Give your DH a cold beer and the remote,or send him to the golf course, or wherever he would be happy. Then go directly to your sewing machine and sew, sew, sew..... We all are addicted and probably need an intervention, but oh well.....

Ditto!!

Seems fairly normal behavior from where I'm sitting!!! Yep - was working on a tote bag late Friday night, then watched a few tutorials (quilting of course) - before I went to bed around 12:30 am or so, then was up at 7 am because that was when I woke and then I started thinking (which was the problem). I had already determined, as I was drifting off to sleep, that I really did want that front pocket on my tote - and yet the tote was complete - but I was determined there was a way to add that pocket anyway!!! And there was. I'll have to upload a picture in the pictures section. :-)

mighty 07-22-2012 03:09 PM

Sounds normal to me, LOL!!!!! I even dream about quilting!!!!!

helou 07-22-2012 03:34 PM

great lolll

LivelyLady 07-22-2012 06:20 PM

What a great tee shirt!!! Quilting to me is something that is enjoyable and productive; also, it has been a stress reliever.........and a heck of lot cheaper than a therapist.

Neesie 07-22-2012 07:20 PM

So you get a new toy and he expects you to NOT play with it??? Men can be so silly! :D

Digitizingqueen 07-22-2012 08:58 PM

I call it my passion :-) need to do it like I need to breath

Couldnt agree more! I join you in Sept!! Can't wait!! Been making all the purchases in anticipation of having sewing time!!

nprisner 07-23-2012 04:25 AM

Got hooked this February making a Valentine wall hanging at my church, and have since made 3 full size quilts, a baby quilt and a table runner. Last night, I finished the top of a Dresden plate quilt. Guess I would say I'm in that same boat with y'all -- and happy to be there! lol

You're going to love your new freedom to choose what you want to do or not do. It's so much fun to get up every morning! Congrats a little early!

i have been told the same thing only a few years back,so when my family saids hon,or mom would you get me a quilt i feel a little chilly i just smile and laugh.then they say please i am really cold.then laugh again an go get one and ask them how does it feel.

Latrinka 07-23-2012 04:39 AM

I say it's a wonderful obsession! At least we have something to show for out time!

Delta 07-23-2012 04:52 AM

Welcome for th family. You will also find when you look at something you will begin to see how the pattern is and how you can turn it into a quilt. sometimes it's just a pattern that is painted on something but it can still be made into a quilt. lol
Can't wait to see your quilts.

Hello, my name is Linda and I am a quilt addict. My husband thinks I go twice a month to a 12 step program for help, but I am actually going to my quilt guild meeting and sewing day. He thinks I go every spring to "dry out" for three days, but I am actually going on a quilt retreat. He never asks why I take my sewing machine with me...
Welcome to the family!

I was supposed to be laid off at the end of this month and was looking forward to having more quilting time as well as setting up a dedication sewing room. Now I'm still working for another 30 days (not really complaining) but it is cutting into my quilting!

Caswews 07-23-2012 06:07 AM

lol well if this is an obsession .. hmmm when I was off 5 weeks due to foot problem that was all I did was sew, except for when the medicine said I needed a nappy. DH works nights and I went out into the "ROOM" (which we share), and sewed to my heart's contentment or until I needed a nappy according to the medicine !LOL. He would get up and know exactly where to look for the dog and me.. back door to the sewing room open, nice breeze coming through and my machine a humming ! Or on the couch with the tv on low and fast asleep for a few hours.. LOL
Oh and I could have worse obsessions for sure ! lol

And I forgot to mention that I even see quilting related things wherever I go. For instance, I was on an Alaska Air flight earlier this year and the bulkhead made me think of quilting to the point I took a picture of it. Addicted to quilting? Nahhh! LOL

IdahoSandy 07-23-2012 06:18 AM

Oh yes, I can relate to you on this. Day or night I am doodling new quilt designs, with these new designs flowing in to my mind from where ever. If I make a quilt from some elses design, I always have to change it so it is then mine. Don't ever stop. This is called creativity.

NannyPat 07-23-2012 06:29 AM

Oh my! You are tooo funny!! Our creativity obviously runs wild into our conversations, huh? I'm still laughing!!

MimiBug123 07-23-2012 06:33 AM

If it's a disease, then I am afraid it's one of epidemic proportions! We all have it and don't want to be cured. Sounds like you have really gotten a bad case in a few months, so you must have some new strain that works fast. LOL! Enjoy and just don't listen to the whiners. Works around here!

LOL - your asking the right crowd if you want a positive answer Dawn! Yup! You are "normal" - at least here on the QB! Isn't it wonderful to have a productive and rewarding passion like quilting?! TV viewing is something i only do now with family nights.

You must be laughing at all your witty answers - the people here are a bundle of fun!

katesnanna 07-23-2012 06:55 AM

Hey!! Welcome to the happiest club there is. Don't worry, DH will learn eventually. I have woken in the night to get up and draw an idea so I don't forget it. If I doodle these days it is a pattern or a block. Quilting makes me happier than most things except GKids so I don't see anything wrong with what I do.
BTW The only place housework comes before quilting is in the dictionary. Enjoy every minute that you quilt.

quiltmom04 07-23-2012 06:56 AM

Perfectly normal! I just can't get enough! There ar dust bunnies blowing across the floor, and whole bunches of stuff that needs to be cleaned, but I just keep sewing and sewing! I figure in 50 years, no one will care whether my house was clean, but hopefully all the quilts I've made will turn up somewhere!

Hey, it keeps us off the streets & out of the bars. LOL. It's a very clean, productive, creative obsession so just let him know how lucky he is to have you.

Prissnboot 07-23-2012 08:55 AM

I must admit that ...well, let's say during a time that fabric should have been the furthest thing from my mind, I got excited when I realized I could find a particular pattern at a particular store. My husband still won't let me live that one down - it's now a running joke.

ellifour 07-23-2012 11:48 AM

my way of thinking too! why not do something we love in those hours,

sylviasmom 07-23-2012 12:57 PM

If I wasn't into quilting, I would be at the bingo hall. And I would hate that because I never win at bingo. At least with quilting, you have something to show for the money spent. Something pretty and useful.

RedGarnet222 07-23-2012 01:03 PM

Don't worry, the monster part will drop off of the joke the first time you make HIM a quilt. LOL!

Of all of the bad habits some women have this one is at least a home body loving thing to have. Just how many pairs of shoes and purses can you wear?
