My free fabric find

I have started doing crafts. Went to a craft show a couple of weeks ago and meet an elderly man in the booth next to mine. We got to talking, well, he did most of the talking. Any way, his wife was a sewer and she just recently past on. He wanted to know what to do with the fabric that she had, (as he didn't have any one to give it to). So of course, I said I would take it and use it. Went to get it the other day and came home with lots of fabric ($1,000-1,500). Lots of NFL, kits and panels (vests and Christmas stockings, etc) and lots of other fabric. My house now looks like a quilt store blow up in it! As I have been only able to buy small amounts at a time, a lot of my fabric is a lot less than 1/2 of a fat quarter, it feels good to be able to make big projects and have the fabric left over to do other things with.

Bless his heart! Enjoy!

If you make any charity pieces you might add a "in memory of ....." to the piece.

willferg 10-21-2012 06:52 AM

I am so happy for you. It's nice to see a quilter's stash passed on to someone who will love it and appreciate it just as much.

Deborahlees 10-21-2012 06:57 AM

What a happy blessing on you....

Lori S 10-21-2012 07:00 AM

It's amazing to me how sometimes the right things just seem to happen at the right time for the right person. Enjoy!

QuiltnNan 10-21-2012 07:30 AM

how wonderful for you!

Daylesewblessed 10-21-2012 07:39 AM

Your kindness in visiting with the man has brought blessings to both of you. And certainly his wife's memory lives on with every piece of fabric you use!

Congratulations on your new mega stash!

germanquilter 10-21-2012 08:09 AM

Maybe you could make him a quilt and label it "In memory of ..." for his generosity :)

batikmystique 10-21-2012 08:12 AM

To take this one step further, if you are so inclined, make a small token (maybe a wall quilt) of your appreciation for this man using some of the fabrics with an "In memory of" label on the quilt.

How kind of him and how lucky for you. Enjoy all your new fabric.

coffeebreak 10-21-2012 08:17 AM

That's cool. I'd use some of the fabrci and make him a quilt with a label saying "from...(his wife's name) or something like that.

cad_queen_2000 10-21-2012 08:28 AM

Excellent, you are very lucky, and he is very generous! I would make him a special quilt as a thank-you. I think he would appreciate it.

patchsamkim 10-21-2012 09:24 AM

A quilt as a thank-you with a special label would be an awesome gift back to him for his generosity.

I have to tell you what my DH said. "Poor guy." I asked you mean the man that lost his wife? He said "no the guy married to the one that got all the stuff" "Why?" I asked "Now he has that stuff all over the house and will probably have to sleep on the couch, no room for him" I said "I thought you meant the elderly man" he said "no, He's got his house back" If yall are interested in sending him get well cards during his hospital stay let me know ;-D

I bet he would really love it. I guess all of us who have a "stash" of fabric need to think about who we want our fabric to go to should something happen to us. I've told my husband to ask my best friend and then my family if they want my stuff. haha

Looking forward to seeing some projects from you.

rj.neihart 10-22-2012 03:07 AM

Sounds like you have been gifted with an early Christmas!

I was thinking the same thing about a memory quilt for him to remember her by and to show him how much I appreciate
his generosity.

Your husband does not have to worry about that "poor guy". I am a widow but I live in a small apartment!

sewnbug 10-22-2012 03:31 AM

God Bless him! Maybe you can make him a small something for being so generous.

Krystyna 10-22-2012 03:31 AM

How wonderful for you! He had the blessing of someone to listen to him and you had the blessing of receiving the fabric.

dglvr 10-22-2012 04:45 AM

Wow right place at the right time. What a guy. That was soooo nice. Congrats on the stash.

#1piecemaker 10-22-2012 05:01 AM

What a wonderful story! I'm so happy for you. Amazing how the good Lord works sometimes. I believe that he filled your need.

sewsew busy 10-22-2012 07:22 AM

You are so blessed. Have fun and post pictures of your projects when finished.

Dodee 10-22-2012 07:26 AM

Oh my - wish I could find something like that. Sounds great and I'm sure you will use it wisely.

broomstix 10-22-2012 07:27 AM

bless this man. He was able to see his wifes love go to someones that appreciates it.
He would have been able to seee it in your eyes. as he would have seen it in his wifes eyes
over the years with her. Happy sewing.

susie-susie-susie 10-22-2012 07:30 AM

Lucky you, enjoy. The fact that he talked your ears off tells me that he is probably lonely. I'm sure he is glad to have the supplies go to someone who will use them. Making him a quilt is a good idea. Let us see when you are done.
Sue

carolynjo 10-22-2012 07:36 AM

What a wonder gift to you. Do make him a small gift in memory of and enjoy the rest.

solstice3 10-22-2012 09:10 AM

sorry for his loss but congrats on your find

kqqlme1147 10-22-2012 09:14 AM

Or make him a lap quilt out of some of it.

Rose Burnett 10-22-2012 09:25 AM

What a wonderful gift you have received! Like many others, I hope that you make a lap robe or quilt for the kind man who
gifted you with the fabric. His wife would be happy that he was generous with her stash and that he gave it to someone who truly appreciated it. It was kind that you let him talk to you during your craft exhibit.

diamondee 10-22-2012 09:57 AM

It was no mistake that your booth ended up next to his. You have been truly blessed. Now you will be looking for more time to quilt LOL I agree with the others , something in memory or a thank you would be very nice, it doesn't have to be prefect just genuine. maybe something scrappy to use a lot of the fabric you received.

nstitches4u 10-22-2012 10:06 AM

How sweet of him to give it to you. I'm sure his wife would approve. She would want it to be put to good use.

wordpaintervs 10-22-2012 10:59 AM

I agree. If you can find this man, either begin visiting him, and/or make something nice 'in memory of ....'.
What a generous heart he had to give you all that. Thanks for sharing and God bless that man...whomever he is.

Beeboop71 10-22-2012 11:10 AM

What a wonderful kind heart! I agree with the others. You should definitely make him something in his wife's memory and to also show your appreciation for his generosity.

cowgirlquilter 10-22-2012 11:12 AM

That is a wonderful heartwarming story.......cant wait to see the pretties you make out of the goodies!!!

You didn't poke his eyes out yet? tee hee

Luv Quilts and Cats 10-22-2012 01:42 PM

Lucky, lucky! It was nice of him to find someone who could use it. Sounds like it will keep you busy!

Carol34446 10-22-2012 03:19 PM

A lap size quilt with in memory of would be great so he can sit under it when watching TV or resting. Older folks get cold easily, and he would have part of her to warm him, what a wonderful feeling that would be for him.
