Now, I have patched some in the past, and it's not always easy to patch knee holes and pocket holes, and now we can afford to buy him new jeans, when he needs them. He also told me once, that one of the guys he worked with, wanted to know if I would patch some of his jeans, umm no. I work everyday and just don't want to patch clothes. I will sew up some things for the grandkids though, they are special. So anyone else not like to patch clothes.
Current DH wouldn't wear patched jeans. go figure that one. |

For anyone who NEEDS to:
I keep donor jeans on hand. Kneel-on-able Knees: cut a patch the width of the front pant leg. Patch should start 2-3 inches above knee, and end 3-4 inches below the bottom of the knee. zigzag or serge the edges of the patch. put the patch on the inside of the pant leg. straight stitch sew it to side seams. straight stitch sew across the top and bottom. straight stitch around the hole, about 1" away. zigzag the hole to the patch. Other body parts, ripped jeans behind pockets, worn out thigh area. Same. Patch goes inside. Suggestion for mending your PJ bottom, if they're knit: Use a very soft old t-shirt. |
I will patch DH's but only his! He reminds me that any money we don't have to spend on new jeans could go for fabric. He is so right of course. :D

I patched 4 pairs of jeans over the summer for a friend. They had BIG holes in them. But she didn't have money for new jeans at that point, and she was losing weight and would need to get smaller jeans within a month or so, and (most importantly) she had basically acted as my research assistant and copied and scanned a bunch of articles I needed for my thesis, so that I didn't have to drive 4 hours to get them myself. So I was willing to patch a few pairs of jeans. ;) And I have all her college T-shirts to make her a memory quilt, but that' a different matter....
|
Oh, go ahead and patch them. Hee-hee, just patch them so they'll never ask again.

I just tell everyone who ask if I can mend something for them that I own a sewing machine not a mending machine, if they buy me a mending machine a will consider teaching them how to mend on it. LOL Works every time no one wants to mend.

I'm with you. I hate to sew clothes, used to do it alot in my younger years. Don't like to hem, take out (never in) seams.
I'd rather toss them just to get them out of site and go quilt. |

He was KIDDING, right?
I agree with you wholeheartedly. Quilting yes, patchwork yes, but patching clothes and holes ... NO |
I hear ya............I absolutely detest any kind of mending...even buttons! BUT let me make a purse and I don't have any qualms about buttons or zippers, and the only kind of patches I do is patchwork :D

hubby split the backside of his NEW GOOD shorts..of course I patched them...they cost $28 and he only had them on twice!
|
DH destroys his work clothes. He won't let me patch them because by the time they need patching the paint splatters and oil based stain is holding them together.
I get asked by coworkers to fix this or that. My stock answer is "Would you like to borrow a machine?" They always say "No" or "I have a machine." I then tell them how long it will take and how much it will be. My mending work has fallen way off. Hmmm... must be the recession. |
NEVER tell my husband my $5,000 machine can mend!!!
|
I am with you. I hate to patch anything and especially jeans. I will sew up seams or replace a button but that's about my limit. I keep telling my hubby I am not turning my hobby into a chore. LOL
|
Oh, just remembered a true story.
A customer of mine said her husband always managed to tear the seat of every new pair of jeans she bought him until she came up with the 'miracle patch'. She embroidered love birds over the hole in the seat of his pants. Of course, he didn't notice but wondered why all the guys at breakfast that morning were snickering. Then the waitress said something 'cute'. Finally about half way through the day HE noticed! He never tore the seat in a new pair of jeans again! |
I'm with you all I hate to do repairs or hem jeans they are a pain and I don't like doing repairs or hemming I prefer starting with a piece of fabric and making something from it. I love that even tho I have had moments that I would like to heave it all in a ball and throw in the corner and my hubby can't unerstand that either he thinks it's to hard to make something from scratch. Oh well. Sue

I would rather make a whole new item, than repair one.
|
Advice - get a sewing machine with NO free arm - then you physically can't do mending on it.
I do however have a double duvet cover here that a friend has asked me to make into a single and it's sat there for weeks and I really should do it, it will probably only take half an hour and I said I would but the truth is, I DON'T WANNA!!!  |
I have patched pants for my husband and they are never patched right by his standards so i dont do it any more they get cut up.
|
I patch a lot of jeans. My son in law is a carpenter and I fix his pants all the time.
It's a skill I can use to help others. I usually un-sew the seams and replace whole sections, that's not really "patching" Vicky~ |
To me it's always easier to make something new from scratch than to fix something that messed up.

I have patched jeans in the past, but now my children are old enough to do it themselves. Seems as though they are able to buy new ones instead of patching! (LOL)
|
I hate patching up anything.
|
I do what is necessary in my own household but no I do not take in sewing and patching from others for "Free" or "Cash". I do not enjoy it, have to much to do, just say no and that is all there is. Most of the freeloaders just to lazy wanting you to do their work while they have good time. No thanks.
|
I'd rather take a beating than patch anything!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Carharts I'll make an exception, they are expensive. |
I haven't read all the thread but I can remember as a kid having blisters on my heels from the mending on the heels of my socks. I grew up with home made clothes all my life, so when I got married I informed my husband I WOULD NOT be mending clothes. If we were that poor we should not be having children. If something got a hole in it, in the rag bag it went. Last fall I put a patch in a shirt sleeve for my neighbor (he is a widower). He said he didn't care what it looked like, so I found some plaid flannel to match the burgandy flannel. Every time I see him outside in that shirt I cringe. He said he has gotten many compliments from his buddies on the fine patching job on his sleeve. I just hope they don't line up out in front.
|
I use this "Picasso" saying as my signature line!
|
Husband needed a button resewn on - it sat for weeks. He finally asked for a needle and thread and did it himself.
|
I hand them a card, from a friend who does MY patching!!!
|
I don't repair anything anymore, it's not worth my time or energy, I'd rather sew a quilt.
|
I hate to admit it, but, the last time my DH wanted me to patch his jeans, I bought the iron on kind, and patched them with that. I have been sewing forever, I have made clothes from wedding dresses, Mother of the bride dresses, to little baby clothes. But ... I do not want to alter clothes, or patch. And I don't ... do it. I do not enjoy those things, and this is my way of enjoying my time.. by creating...
|
My sewing machine isn't equipped to handle jean material. :) I even have 2 machines, lol. But as far as mending socks etc. Hah. Buy new ones is what I say.
|
All I do is make quilts and sew on a button or two. I did all the patching re sewing seams etc. and made some clothes when the kids were home they moved out and grew up. I can do mending but, I don't.
|
While raising my kids as a single parent, I supplemented my income by sewing, altering and patching for others. When that extra income was not longer needed...I no longer opened my machine for under $35-and that was 20 yrs ago! Needless to say, my sewing once again became my pleasure!
