My husband is looking for a mental institution for me ...
Well, I think he is, because he told me last night I need to be committed. I bought a Brother DreamCreator VM5100 last week - I am in L O V E with it! It's a fabulous machine, and I am in heaven. But I told DH that I really want a Pfaff in a couple of years. You would have thought I told him I was considering having my arm removed from my torso and sewn on my head. He asked me why I wanted it and I told him that it has a bigger embroidery area and that I would like to be able to do the larger in-hoop quilting designs that aren't compatible with my Brother. He just shook his head and said something about needing to be committed and that he bet I'd be after that machine next March (I get my bonus in March every year).
Anyway, does anyone have either the Creative Performance or Creative Sensation? I would love to know just how useful the larger embroidery area might be for quilting. :D Oh, and maybe he's right about next March ... I could probably sell the 8900 for enough to help pay for the Pfaff, right? :p |
You rock! I have learned not to mention my new machine buying to DH. He will ask the silliest questions like did your other machine break? or Do you have room for another one? LOL He has no care what so ever what I buy for quilting. That makes him a keeper for sure.
|
I have one of those, he is an enabler!! Course I don't say much about his 3 motorcycles either! :)
|
I DID bring up the bikes, and the video games ... and the FOUR consoles scattered around the house, three of which were purchased in the last few months. LOL But it's all in good fun. His attitude is, if we have the money and it's something you really want ... get it! We're very fortunate to be able to use my bonus money for the fun stuff. :-D
|
I have found comparing machines and other crafting implements to different types of tools like saws and screwdrivers and how you need more than one type of each has been rather effective at getting the point across. ;)

I've got one of those too! He encourages me to outfit my studio. I encourage him to outfit his shop- with 5 motorcycles and tools and who knows what else. At least he has any tool needed to fix something!
|
I just buy a machine when I decide to. My stuff is cheaper than all the lawn machines he buys. I could buy the most expensive machine out there and still have money left over.
I am happy with my two straight stitch only machines that I use all the time. They are all I need. |

My Dh complained when I bought the 401 couple months back but when I'm one or the other, he grabs a chair and says I need to do this or that. Tell me we don't need another machine because if one of us is on one and the other is broken we need another or two for a back up.

Now ladies without a DH etc I just look think buy. So therapeutic. Sometimes a think a warning voice like really another machine would make me think that how many machines can I use at one time with one pair of hands? I must admit I also like electric tools. Drills bandsaw etc
|
My DH and I have separate finances, so other than rolling his eyes at me when (yet another!) box of fabric shows up on the porch, he doesn't really care what I spend my money on. And since it's not his money, if I'm ever verbally mulling over a choice between two machines, he often tells me to go ahead and buy the expensive one. Easy for him to say, he's not paying for it! LOL
|
I have the exact opposite problem...not that I'm complaining! My husband is very supportive of my quilting. When I first started I wanted to just buy a cheap machine. A quilting friend of mine suggested I get a good one and took me to the local Elna dealer and a few others. I fell in love with a used Elna that had been traded in for a "trade-up". The used 1 cost $1600! I thought that was totally too much. I told my hubs and he said that's what I should get and went and bought it for me along with a very nice sewing rolling chair and had a table made for me. That was 8 yrs ago. Fast forward to about 4 yrs ago and he bought me a BabyLoc Jewel and table to the tune of just under $10,000. This past Aug he got a very nice sized bonus and wanted to buy me a brand new Elna! I told him there is nothing wrong with the 1 I have and I love it. Instead he is putting lighting in my quilting studio (formerly the formal LR) and also finishing the garage to move my Jewel, table and battings out there. He brought home a very nice cabinet last night that has storage and a granat top and said he has a bigger one that matches coming. Once we get the Jewel moved out of the studio we're getting a couch or recliner in there so he can come in with me and watch TV while I quilt. The other night he was looking at a donation quilt I had hanging up waiting for binding and he said how he thought I got better with each quilt I made and felt it was a shame that I gave so many of them away...he's a definite keeper!
|
If my DH asks why I'm getting another machine ( I have 13), I ask him why he's getting another bicycle (he has over 30 vintage bikes)...

Oh my husband is definitely supportive of my habit ...but if he didn't roll his eyes and make a comment or two, he'd feel like he hadn't done his job. LOL He has let me turn our master bedroom into my studio, even though we still have to sleep there. And he says that once the kids are gone, I can move our bed to our son's room and have the entire master (it's ginormous!) for a studio. Not many men would agree to moving out of the master! |
Mine just says..."whatever makes you happy, makes me happy". Yeah, he's a keeper. I've had him for 37 almost 38 years now. haha
|
I encourage my DH with his motorcycle hobby as well. Recently had it totally remodeled for him and bought him a big air compressor. He only has three motorcycles at the momeht though. The payoff for me? I got a big Koala table a month or two ago and today we bought a longarm. We're definitely a pair of enablers!
|
Me too. When DH told me all longarms are the same, I said it was just like me saying all motorcycles are the same. He got my point immediately.:)
|
DH's latest had to have was a new bigger big truck he had to have after he bought another four wheeler so he could haul all of his toys to hunting camp. We could have bought a small house for what all that cost. I don't blink at the cost of a sewing machine.
|
LOL! Clearly us quilters are attracted to bikers. I love it!
ETA: by the way, I love to ride myself, but I'd rather spend the money on sewing machines. I can get by with just one bike myself. ;-) |

Think about a 6 needle Brother or Babylock. They are work horses and have a large hoop that is 200x300 mm. I quilt on mine, do appliqués etc. They are wonderful machines and you can frequently find a used machine that is in great shape for less money than a new single machine.
|
After fifty years my DH has resigned himself to the fact that I'm a total nut when it comes to quilting and sewing. He has been very supportive and is the best at picking colors; he still doesn't understand "stash." I have three machines and a serger and while a long arm would be heaven I think at this point in my life and the fact that I probably should be in a home for deranged quilters, I'm not going to "rock the boat."
|
Ladies just appreciate your husbands my husband passed away 12 years ago and I quilt because he encouraged my hobby and he loved to give my quilts as gifts

"Anyway, does anyone have either the Creative Performance or Creative Sensation? I would love to know just how useful the larger embroidery area might be for quilting. :D"
Yes - I have the Creative Sensation and I absolutely love it. It is a "perfect" machine as far as I am concerned. The larger embroidery area, with the 350mm x 360mm hoop is very helpful. I have made some beautiful 18" pillows using this hoop, and have also used it to quilt many times, too. It is an awesome machine. I have never quilted a king size quilt on it using embroidery and don't have any desire to, but I have heard from people who have. I have used the large size embroidery hoop to embroider designs on fabric and then made large quilts out of them. Here is a picture of one of them. I was able to embroidery each of the blocks, except for the middle one, in one hooping. After I had all the blocks put together, I had it quilted by a long arm quilter. If I was really interested in a machine to quilt my finished quilts I would not consider any embroidery machine. I would look for an actual quilting machine. However, for everything else, I would definitely buy the Pfaff Creative Sensation Pro. |
LOL when I bought the Pfaff Ambition 1.5 he thought I was off my rocker .. LOL What you paid that much for it ? Why ?
Well when he found out I was looking for an LA He about stroked at the price ! LOL OH well I don't say anything about how much he puts into his hobbies .. LOL |
My husband bought me a 10 needle embroidery machine last year, motive , he's leaning to digitize his tractors, fire trucks and all kinds of man toys that he wants on hats and jackets. in the mean time I get to do lots of my pretties.
|
My best friends all have DH's that don't have to be included in every buying decision and we impulse buy a lot when we are together. I don't understand when I read a post that says My DH let me buy. I could never be that wifey. LOL

When we're talking about a machine that costs several thousand dollars, it's a mutual decision. I don't decide to spend $5000 without talking about it with him first, just as he doesn't go out and spend thousands on a new bike without talking it over with me. That said, I haven't seen anyone here say that their husband "let" them buy anything ... |

If hubby thinks you should be committed, then you are in great company. My DH complains about the amount of fabric and crafting supplies I have, and that they take up too much room. Well, I got rid of half my fabric when we had to move after losing our house due to the huge medical bills we had when he became disabled. Quilting is my therapy and I need it for my mental health; but he thinks nothing about new upgrades to his computer. Like someone said - Men are from Mars, women are from Venus.

Every couple is different. The only decided together purchase for DH and me was our house. We each have our own bank account and one joint one to pay the household bills. It works for us.
|
I husband encourages me and has no issues except not having enough room...he told me I had to get rid of my treadle before I got my Sweet sixteen...but I just moved stuff a round a bit and put it in...but that is it...no more room. I use the treadle table for my serger so it can stay. Now if I got rid of the treadmill... sadly no room for a longarm. We measured...it would take up way to much room so sitdown will have to do.

I was not interested in sewing until my mid 40's. I am hoping my granddaughter will be interested.

That's my husband exactly and we just celebrated our 54th anniversary. It helps that we both have the same value system when it comes to money. He knows that I am more of an agonizer than a spendthrift so he wants me to just get on with it. My current agony is deciding to buy a Janome 8900 at my advanced age. Neither daughter is the least bit interested in sewing.
|
My DH just asks "are you going to use it" and I say "yes" (what else would I say...no?), then he's perfectly fine with it. I've been through a lot and he wants me to be happy. He was even encouraging me about a LA machine, but I know I wouldn't get the full use out of it so got the big Bernina instead. Of course, he has his obsessions too. At least my stuff can be contained in one room!

My only caution would be spending your bonus on a PFAFF. I have one that is 7 years old and is totally useless because the new "updates" can't talk to it. Also it has had to be totally rebuilt twice and has been in the repair shop more than I can count. I have never received a bonus so of course this is my lifetime machine. Shop wisely, spend freely!

it brought a pfaff creative vision in 2008 when i retired . There is a lot about the machine that i realy love. like the big hoops and the built in walking foot. BUT i have had lots of trouble with the machine, In fact i had 4 machine now that they replace all the creative vision. untill i change dealers and that dealer fix it for me . So im not sure if it was the dealer that was the trouble or if it was the machines. But i do like the machine.
