My new title is Handi-woman Quilter Supreme

Just for grins, you gotta love guys!!!

We usually hire out everything around the house. My husband can duct tape something together but that's the end of his mechanical abilities. I literally hire out the changing of the light bulbs in my office!!

We had a slow leak in the master bath and it ruined the floor. I said, come on we can fix this. It is stupid to pay out all this money for stuff I know we can do.

So I get on you tube and away we go. Had to yank the subflooring, etc down to the joists. We bought all the saws that they recommended, etc.

My husband could not figure out how we were going to get the subflooring back in square with a hole for the toilet in the center and was having a cow over laying the 12 inch vinyl tiles with the multiple sub cuts.

There he is with some carpenter's square and God knows what else, telling me he needs a tile cutting knife so I need to go to the store. Plus circle cutting thing was blowing his mind.

Now what is the difference between a 10 foot by 8 foot bathroom vinyl floor and a queen size quilt??? In my mind, not a heck of alot. So I go upstairs and start pulling out rotary cutters and matts and rectangle/circle templates and rulers and chalk.

I started measuring the floor in multiple places, marking the plywood where to cut with a 24 inch Omnigrid square and a binding tool. He was positive I had flipped my lid so off he trots to the store just grumbling like mad.

By the time he gets back from Home Depot which is the next town over, I have used my 24 inch square and big rulers to mark the two pieces of subflooring like a quilt, even with notes on which side of the line to cut (just like moving your needle to one side), he was nodding. It fit like it didn't even need nails.

By then I was measuring out the room to get the tiles centers.

After I marked out the nastiest piece of vinyl with a notch out and two sub-cuts that weren't 90 degrees, he was impressed and was looking for the receipt to return the stuff he had bought to the hardware store. When I scored it with the rotary cutters, using the difference sizes to get into the tight angles and it slid perfectly into the space, you could see a whole new appreciation for my quilting and all that "junk up in your room".

He is finishing some of the easier cuts now....with my 60mm rotary cutter.

He says isn't Joann's having a sale today? Yep. Well if there anymore of these cool things you need, go get them, because they are really slick. No, honey, other than replacing the blades we used out of my stock, I am pretty set for now.

Good job!! That is a great story.

AliKat 12-30-2012 10:40 AM

Too funny. Too true.

I was the one to figure out how to frame the basement so we could expose the window or not. We decided not as it didn't let in any light anyway and was just a spider web collector.

Love your story. I, too, am married to Mr. Un-Technical.

My husband went to work for the railroad at 18 and has been on call ever since, so he's no handyman. We hire everything out. Even hire someone to mow the 1/2 acre lawn. Figures he'll lose too much pay mowing his own lawn. He's right. I'm about to venture into putting down wood flooring with a man friend. Just need him to get me going and then I can take over all by myself. I painted most the inside of the house by myself. I need to figure how to replace the bathroom shower/bathtub unit also. That is going to be tricky. I might need some muscle to help with that project.

Prism99 12-30-2012 03:19 PM

Terrific story!!! Thanks for posting!

Daylesewblessed 12-30-2012 03:53 PM

It is not the tools as much as it is your experience and "know-how" that are impressive!

QuiltnLady1 12-30-2012 03:54 PM

Great story -- thanks for posting. DH is not very handy but has discovered that the rotary cutters and rulers work really well on vinyl and other things he needs cut. When he asks where I keep them I remind him they are in MY sewing room and can only be borrowed if I bring them out.

MaryStoaks 12-30-2012 04:28 PM

Wow! Great job!!!!

KarenR 12-30-2012 04:32 PM

Good Job!
Maybe you could've gotten enough blades for the next year.

Threads 77 12-30-2012 04:36 PM

What a cute story and what a genius you are! All it takes is a woman to solve a problem.

NikkiLu 12-30-2012 05:02 PM

WOW - there is nothing that a man can do that a woman cannot also do - except for some brute strength things. My DH doesn't know the difference between a saw and a hammer.

vondae 12-30-2012 05:16 PM

You Go Girl!! She is woman watch her Quilt??? Anyway, so proud of you. He'll never gripe about all that junk again, will he. Now he has a new respect for what you do.

Lstew2212 12-30-2012 05:21 PM

sewbeadit 12-30-2012 05:27 PM

"...He says isn't Joann's having a sale today? Yep. Well if there anymore of these cool things you need, go get them, because they are really slick. No, honey, other than replacing the blades we used out of my stock, I am pretty set for now...."
No???? You said no? I would strike while the iron is hot!

happyquiltmom 12-30-2012 06:10 PM

Terrific story! I also used my quilting ruler several years ago to cut vinyl tiles for my bathroom. However, I didn't want to use my rotary cutter and ruin a blade, so I marked with a pencil and then cut with a utility knife. Same difference...

Cindy60545 12-31-2012 02:28 AM

ROFL! I see I'm not the only one that does this! My DH is home right now & is changing out the tub surround in the spare bathroom. Well, we bought a house that we knew we were going to do some remodeling. This simple task has turned into a total remodel! As I sit here typing, I'm surrounded by all the mess he's created. We've taken the bathroom down to the studs. He asked my GS to go to my studio & get one of my levels (I use it to keep my longarm level & also for the straight edge). Need a ruler? Ask Grandma! She's got lots in her studio! Isn't it amazing how our "stuff" comes in so handy for home repairs??

marybs 12-31-2012 04:02 AM

Thumbs up!

rj.neihart 12-31-2012 04:44 AM

LOL....wonderful story!

coopah 12-31-2012 05:15 AM

 You are one smart and creative woman! And your husband is smart enough to acknowledge it! Kudos to both of you!

sewnsewer2 12-31-2012 05:27 AM

LOL, love your story!!!!

meanmom 12-31-2012 05:54 AM

Yes our quilting supplies are great for things other than quilting. I save a couple of old blades just for such things. I have a pack in my sewing room of old nicked blades.

KwiltyKahy 12-31-2012 06:12 AM

"I am woman, hear me roar"!!!!! Would you run over to my house and help up lay the bathroom floor?
