Are these pens or markers?

JUNEC 03-07-2012 04:38 PM

They make a nice clear crisp line that makes it easy to hand quit. Then the lines disappear when you apply the iron. They also have a 6 pack , 8 pack, single and double (Single and double only are in black) But I have to say I love these things. I have purchased a ton of pencils, and markers and none of them work that great or the lines are real light and smudged and with hand quilting I felt I needed that nice crisp line to follow.

I tested them on several pieces of fabric last night both light and dark and gone as soon as the iron touched it.

Diane, beware that if the quilt gets cold, say it's in your car in the winter, the lines will reappear! We did a test at a meeting and this I say is true.

My neighbor just found the 3 pc. set at Target. I got my first one at Walgreen's so it looks like a lot of stores are carrying them. Have never seen them at Wal Mart though.

I'm just wondering--the ink disappears with a hot iron but comes back in the cold. Then, how can the chemicals in the ink be gone? Wouldn't some of the chemical still be there? After washing the quilt, will the ink still return in a line if quilt gets cold? I would love to use them if I could just be sure.

This is my concern:
Sometimes washing can make things show up MORE.
I hate the pencils I use so I will be waiting to hear you'alls comments!

"the markings can come back in the cold - I think it was 20 degrees or if you put it in the freezer."

Any idea if the markings go away again once the quilt warms up?

This is exactly my concern, and is the reason why I won't use them. I've heard some people say the ink washes out and others say it doesn't wash out.

A quick trip to the dryer will also erase them again.

I love these marking pens too. I bought one and liked it so much that I bought several more different colors. The color will come back when the temperature goes below about 20 degrees. This does not happen after the quilt has been washed, so laundering the quilt takes care of that problem.

I love mine also.

Hey Quiltstringz,
I would think that if you were in the freezer with the quilt, you wouldn't be able to see the lines anyway because the light goes out when you close the door. But the quilt could help to keep you warm while you are in there.

I got myself some of these pens.......I too loved them but just a small warning.....please test these on your material before putting them on your quilt. I used it on some material, lighter colored and when ironing it all came out.......but I than tried the black on some purple canvas material for placement of a embroidery and I realized I wanted to move it so I ironed it to remove it and I had a white line.......I paniced as this was not my material....I was just doing a embroidery for someone. I let it cool and tried to iron again to see if it would go away and it didn't go away, I did happen to remember I had some fabric markers and a purple one so I did my embroidery and than took the purple fabric marker and covered up the line. Than I was making a bag and used the red and the same thing happend so please please please test first on a scrap peice of material.............I still love these but just will be careful on what I use them.

So do the lines reappear over and over again?
This would annoy me.
Seems like there is chemical reaction going on that does not dissipate. Makes me wonder what it is...

Sometimes I just wing it and don't even mark my quilts when I hand quilt. Makes for some interesting stuff that I sometimes have to re-do. But then I have gotten a whole lot better judging my spacing.

An Amish quilter I met told me to just use graphite and a mechanical pencil and then I erase it. I am very judicious in my use, though!

Use caution when using frixion pens!!!

Yes, an iron makes the marks transparent so they can't be seen but if the quilt is exposed to cold, as in a storage unit, or in transit, the marks will come back. I used the frixion pens on a huge double wedding ring quilt I made and to address the issue of cold, for any future generation person that will inherit the quilt - I wrote out the directions to again make the marks transparent by using a hot iron. There is NOTHING and I do mean NOTHING that will remove the frixion ink. Yes, it will become transparent with heat, but it is still "there" waiting to reappear when exposed to cold. I don't use frixion pens any more for this very reason.

I have a friend who got a few at a quilt show and raves about them! Thanks for sharing.
