My Newest Find

I had been struggling trying to find a marker, pen pencil that would show up good on the fabrics. A coworker that also quilts told me about Pilot Brand Frixion Erasable pens. Said she got them at a quilt show however, Staples also carries them (I'm sure other office supplies places do also. I got the 3 pack last night and I have to say I love these things. They make a nice clear crisp line that makes it easy to hand quit. Then the lines disappear when you apply the iron. They also have a 6 pack , 8 pack, single and double (Single and double only are in black) But I have to say I love these things. I have purchased a ton of pencils, and markers and none of them work that great or the lines are real light and smudged and with hand quilting I felt I needed that nice crisp line to follow.

I tested them on several pieces of fabric last night both light and dark and gone as soon as the iron touched it.

I haven't tried these yet, but one one of my groups I read some qualifiers about them. It may have been here. I'll check and if it is on my other group, I'll copy and post. Best to take advantage of others testing too. If they really are that great I'll run some tests on them too. I'm always looking for a better way to mark.

quiltstringz 03-06-2012 05:44 AM

I agree I absolutely love these and my mom uses them to mark her patterns for hand embroidery. I didn't realize that Staples also carried them thanks for that info. the only thing I have heard is that the markings can come back in the cold - I think it was 20 degrees or if you put it in the freezer. If my quilt is ever out in 20 degree weather I can bet the last thing anyone would be thinking of is seeing the marking

pinkberrykay 03-06-2012 06:31 AM

i have been using these and they are great!!!

Sew N Tune 03-06-2012 06:43 AM

They were recommended to my by my local quilt store, so I bought one. Love, love it. Then I bought the 8 pk, thru my local office supply store. They had them on sale for $16.84. Now I have all the colors, and I could not be happier. They just work for me.

They say the best thing to do is iron out then wash... I haven't tried it yet with the washing..

BellaBoo 03-06-2012 06:50 AM

Fons and Porter recommends these pens too. I bought a set from Amazon that has more colors. I have read some nays about these pens; it's a chemical, the lines come back ( if in freezing temps and the item hasn't been washed), on some fabric a faint line is left after ironing (it fades away in a few hours). I use them and think they are wonderful.

The marks will come back in really cold areas. I figure that my quilts aren't going to be getting that cold but just to let you know. Test them by putting fabric in the freezer after you've ironed away the marks and watch the marks come back. Kids love them for secret games. They do have lots of colors available.

They do not have to freeze to return, took mine from house to car , outside temp 42, lines had returned by the time I arrived, 2 hr trip in warm car.

There have been lots of discussions here about those pens. I hesitate to use them. When I first discovered them a couple of years ago, I did a lot of research and nowhere did I find that they were acid-free. Someone recently told me that Pilot NOW says they are acid free. I know the ink disappears when ironed, but the simple fact that the ink reappears when cold makes me wonder what else stays in the fabric.

Also, there have been some quilters who have said the lighter pens on darker fabric leave yellowish lines. I think I'm going to stick with pens that are manufactured specifically for marking quilts - that's the only way I'll feel safe.

I have not tried these, but will be soon!

I have used them and found that they are fine on some colors, but on dark colors I have had faint white lines as though they bleached the color right out. On one baby quilt I had drawn a cross hatch pattern in blue on a red color. After I ironed it, there was a very faint white cross hatch pattern on it.

Sadiemae 03-06-2012 12:19 PM

My bedroom has no heat, so I would never use them.

I picked some up at Walgreens!

These are the greatest pens in the world.

Rubesgirl 03-07-2012 04:43 AM

I really like them. The marks have all disappeared with ironing and I don't freeze my quilts, soI don't worry about the lines returning. Also, if you wash the quilt, the lines don't return. Better than anything else I've found for marking.:)

stchenfool 03-07-2012 05:03 AM

Thanks for sharing - I purchased one & haven't tried it yet so it's good to know it works!

roadrunr 03-07-2012 05:19 AM

I bought a 34-pack at office max when I had rward points, so didn't pay a thing for them. I have used the red one several times already and love how the markings just iron off. However, I have found that the ink in the pen does not last very long as the red one that I have been using seems to be getting rather hard to see an is running out of ink. Even if the marks do reappear after they get cold, you can always wither put the quilt in the dryer or iron and the markings will disappear.

turner0106 03-07-2012 05:38 AM

I marked a couple of lines a a couple pieces of fabric. I then Ironed them and then placed in the freezer. The only line that came back was the black. The Blue and red did not reappear. I was going to wash them and then place them back in the freezer to see what happens.

I purchased these pens from Target about 6 months ago. They are fantastic!!! I love that they can be ironed away leaving no trace!!

BizyStitches 03-07-2012 05:56 AM

I think it has been over a year if not 2 years since I've tried these pens and I love them. I use them even for marking the back square for half square triangles. Glad you finally found them. Enjoy

Have been using these for awhile now.

solstice3 03-07-2012 07:07 AM

Good info. Is there anything better out there?

starlite 03-07-2012 07:22 AM

Thanks for the info...I never thought to look at Staples. Where in the store would I find them and what are they called if you don't mind telling.

vmowry 03-07-2012 07:30 AM

Amazon.com review says it may leave a white line on dark fabric. Anyone have this experience. I am new to quilting and learning new things every day thanks to all of you!

judykay 03-07-2012 07:33 AM

I have read many mixed reviews about the marks coming back and are afraid to use them. My favorite is still the Crayola Washable Markers that wash out very easily. The only thing I don't like about them is if you make a mistake with your marking you can't just spray water on it and have it disappear, it runs instead but when put in the washer they wash out completely.

urgodschild2 03-07-2012 08:19 AM

I am really interested in this topic. I find that when I use the pens made for quilting on white material.....it is not good. I have marks left on the fabric and washing does not help at all in getting them out. I have been fortunate because it has been only DQ that I have marked so at least I didn't ruin a big quilt. My instructor for our quilt class suggested using crayola washable markers. Now that was a scary thought but she says that it washes right out.

urgodschild2 03-07-2012 08:21 AM

Whoops I should have finished reading all the comments. Thanks for the heads up on the crayola washable markers. Now I may try that.

BellaBoo 03-07-2012 08:31 AM

The chemical washes out and it's acid free and if the lines do come back in a cold environment, throw the quilt in a hot dryer.

DGD has tee shirts that prove that all the washable Crayola marker colors do not wash out. Be sure and test each color first.

Starlight they were with the rest of the pens. They were grouped by Mfg. and they were at the very bottom row. They were really hard to see. Here is the website so you know what the packaging looks like http://www.pilotpen.us/ProductGroup/28-FriXionBall.aspx they are called Frixion erasable pens by Pilot.

Thanks for the tip. I will definitely be trying them.

BarbaraSue 03-07-2012 12:49 PM

Thank you for the info that office suppliers have these pens too. I'm sure the price is better in bulk than singlurly.

bunbytes 03-07-2012 03:58 PM

I just bought a three pack of the Pilot Brand Frixion Erasable pens last week. I trace my Darcy Ashton bunnies with a light table and I can't wait to try them out. Since I blanket stitch the edges and I actually snip into the tracing line when I hand applique, there isn't much of the marking showing, but I like the idea these marks disappearing with heat. Someone was really thinking when they came up with this one!
