DH finally brought my sewing machine out of the house. I do not know what the house looks like on the inside because of thr broken foot and other health issues. I only know what he has told me. She was in my sewing room. Major damge by smoke mostly. The fire did not get to her side of the room I guess. Anyways, I just about lost it when I saw her. I couldn't believe it was my pride and joy. I think it is toast. I plugged it in and it tries to start up, but doesn't make it. If it can be fixed, it would probably be very costly. Billy, any ideas?? Anyone?? I have a feeling I will eventually have to get anew machine. I am going to miss my embroidery!! Here she is. Feel free to cry...I did.

Prism99 03-19-2010 12:41 PM

Oh, my! So sorry for your losses! I doubt that the machine can be fixed. Will your insurance cover a replacement?

Rachel 03-19-2010 12:43 PM

Oh, that's so sad, but I'm glad you and your family made it out okay... I hope insurance will buy you a brand new replacement!

cutebuns 03-19-2010 12:44 PM

I totally feel for you, just over 2 years ago there was a fire in my sewing room, most of the damage was smoke, heat and water, I had more than one machine look like that and a couple more than were melted, it was really hard to look at. be thankful you can't go in and look first hand, I had to look at it all for a long time before it got cleaned up. and then I ended up throwing a lot of it in the bin as I was trying to salvage as much as I could, it was a truly heartbreaking experience,

nursie76 03-19-2010 12:45 PM

Oh my! I also wonder if your homeowners will cover some or part of the cost for replacement.

So sorry that this has happened to you (the whole thing!) I know you will miss your sewing. Maybe there is a friend out there that could lend you a machine when you start feeling like sewing again, until you get one.

Hope your foot is healing and the pain is lessening. {{{HUGS}}}

so sry. I hope you can get a new one.

Jim's Gem 03-19-2010 12:49 PM

Oh, how sad!!!!
I am sure glad that you and your son made it out of the house with only a broken foot!!!!
Hopefully you have good insurance and can get it taken care of!!!

adriansmom 03-19-2010 12:50 PM

No, insurance will not cover it's loss. I wish that they would have.

nursie76 03-19-2010 12:51 PM

Oh that is just rotten! So sorry!

no1jan 03-19-2010 12:53 PM

So sorry to hear about the fire. Hope no one was injured besides the broken foot.

Fires are so devasting! We had one upstairs over our garage about 10 years ago. The insurance payed to replace the items we lost, but the contractor did a terrible job fixing up the room. Luckily we didn't loose memorable items such as people (my son was in the house), pictures, sewing machines we love, etc.

I hope the insurance will take care of it. If you have full replacement value then we will get a new embroidery machine.

Good luck! Hope you recover very fast and get back to quilting!

I know you can renovate old machines, but looks almost impossible.

(((HUGS))) I am so sorry!!!! (((HUGS)))

chris_quilts 03-19-2010 01:46 PM

Cathy, I'm so sorry about your poor machine. If you lived closer, I actually have an older Singer you could use until you get a new one. Hopefully someone will be able to help you iout. SO happy that you and Adrian made it out okay and so sorry about the loss of your 2 kitties.
Chris

Olivia's Grammy 03-19-2010 01:57 PM

Poor you to have to go through this. Poor machine. I am so sorry you lost your kitty babies. That would hurt me the most.

shequilts 03-19-2010 02:00 PM

I feel your pain for your machine. I can't imagine. However, I suspect a lot of that smoke/soot will clean up if you're really patient. The odor will likely remain though. Also, I don't understand why your homeowner's won't cover it. I have always assumed that my machines would be covered under my policy. Aren't they considered a household item?
Is it necessary to attach a Rider to the insurance like insuring jewelry?

cutebuns 03-19-2010 02:02 PM

There is insurance on the property and then there is insurance for content, you can have one without the other, if you have a mortgage the bank will insist that you insure the property and buildings, the other is up to you, that is also what renters would get is insurance on the content as the house and property would be the responsibility of the homeowner.

shequilts 03-19-2010 02:25 PM

So my insured "contents" should be covered without a rider for specifics? Right?

Lacelady 03-19-2010 02:39 PM

I have my buildngs insured, and insurance for contents, plus my Bernina is listed as a specific item. Here in Ireland, anything over the value of €2,500 for a single item needs to be listed separately to be covered. Always a good idea to ask if you aren't sure - I don't pay any more for the cover on my machine, I just needed to list it.

cutebuns 03-19-2010 02:52 PM

Like Lacelady said, some things that you own should be listed, and if you have any high end equipment like a long arm or big embroidery machine they may have you put a rider on for them, they will want documents, pictures etc in some case to prove that you own them (in case of theft) and make sure that the content insurance is enough to cover what you have, you would probably be surprised to learn how much your content is worth, even just price out your bathroom, what would it cost to replace everything, toothpaste, shampoo, razors, soap, since you don't buy everything at once it really doesn't seem like much, add brushes, curling irons etc, linens alone are an arm and a leg if you have to replace them all at once,

Olivia's Grammy 03-19-2010 02:59 PM

When our mountain home burned, we had to list everything we had it in and the value. I got a catalog so I could get the prices our of belongings. We did not rebuild so we didn't get full value. We are probably under insured now with all my machines.

DebbieL 03-19-2010 03:02 PM

That is just terrible. I am so sorry.

cutebuns 03-19-2010 03:05 PM

To give an example, since I just went through this not that long ago, just my sewing supplies and machines were over 50,000,

It is really hard to remember literally everything if there is nothing left or it is stolen,

No content insurance? Our mortgage company specified it. I am sorry your machine passed away. But ecstatic you and your family are alive and safe. Possessions can be replaced, family can't.

shequilts 03-19-2010 03:12 PM

Well, I never even thought of insuring my machines, much less my stash. Believe me, I will. I have at least 30 machines at the present, not to mention the two rooms of fabrics. We have photographed the contents of our home, furniture, walls etc. I don't know why it never occurred to me to consider the considerable investment of my sewing supplies. Thanks all!

Auntie M 03-19-2010 03:16 PM

shequilts -- hopefully your pics are stored somewhere other than the house

Your homeowners insurance should cover, less your deductible, the cost to replace, with a like kind and quality, your machine, and any other items (read that fabric, patterns, etc that were damaged beyond repair by the smoke or heat from the fire. They may want you to try and have your fabric stash cleaned - CONTACT YOUR INSURANCE AGENT or assuming you have already reported the claim, to your adjuster............

Maride 03-19-2010 04:23 PM

Cathy, please check your PM.

Crafty1 03-19-2010 04:31 PM

Sorry about your machine. Hope you feel better real soon!

bodie358 03-19-2010 04:53 PM

I'm so sorry. Use your insurance money to get a new one.

littlehud 03-19-2010 04:58 PM

That poor baby. I'm just happy you and Adrian are still with us. I know your mom sews. Does she have an extra machine you could borrow for a while.

Teacup 03-19-2010 05:17 PM

Cathy, I'm so sorry. What a rotten thing to have to go through. I'm hoping you all get settled soon in a new home and can begin to rebuild your sewing area.

Did you not have homeowners or renters ins? Because if you did, that picture speaks a thousnad word........

I feel so badly for all you ahve lost - but at least you and your family are safe

amandasgramma 03-19-2010 05:55 PM

I had a fire in my home years ago. I found out that SOME appliances can be cleaned --- that black smoke gets INSIDE....do NOT try to start it again. Have the repairman look at it to determine. In my case, the ONE appliance I had and loved was my toaster oven. It was the best I've EVER had. When they got inside it.....the wires were melted. So it couldn't be repaired. Other things were repairable. Get it done ASAP....that black smoke is acidic and will destroy the innards within 6 months.

adriansmom 03-19-2010 06:06 PM

Yes, we did not have insurance on personal contents. With me being disabled, medical bills and only dh working we could not afford it. After this, I realize we can't afford not to. We had actually had it planned to get proper insurance. If the fire would have happened a week later, we would have been fully covered. It was a stupid move, and completely our fault so I have no one to blame. I guess my mom has an old Singer that she is going to let me use. She had received it from a friend who's mom passed away. I don't know what kind, just that it's all metal with cams. I hope it is easy to learn how to use. I am looking at buying a used viking from the local dealer. I really like the shop and the machines. It will take me awhile to save up the money, but I will do it one way or another. Let this be a lesson to all...you can't afford to not have insurance. I Will never make this mistake again!

sewnsewer2 03-19-2010 07:27 PM

OMG! I am soooo sorry about your fire and your poor Bernina!

mom-6 03-19-2010 07:41 PM

You have my deepest sympathy and I know very well how your situation feels. We had a similar loss several years ago. Had let our insurance lapse so no coverage. I was encouraged to try to salvage my mom's 1940's era Singer, but I was afraid to try with the smoke and water damage around it. Not really sure what ended up happening to it...I let my brother handle all that...getting the house bulldozed, etc.

Maride 03-19-2010 09:06 PM

Can anyone with an idea to help Cathy contact me by PM? I can coordinate a little help to get her back to sewing ASAP. I have been helped a lot by the great people in the board and is time for me to give back.

Maria

I am so sorry to hear of your loss, but also let this be a wake up call for the rest of us. If you are using your machines in a business, you MUST declare that on you policy or there will be no coverage.
Mary Alice
