The sashing on my quilt is a purplish/pink batik and it needs to be cleaned. I attached a pic. What do you recommend?

cjomomma 09-19-2010 12:19 PM

Use a shout color catcher or maybe a couple of them in cold water on the gentle cycle.

ptquilts 09-19-2010 12:20 PM

did you make it? did you prewash the fabric?

very nice colors and design,by the way.

Patty Patches 09-19-2010 12:22 PM

Love your quilt.

Amma is right. Use more than one color catcher.

martapr 09-19-2010 12:30 PM

Yes I made it. My first quilt. I did not prewash fabric.

Your quilt is truly beautiful. Both the colors and design are a great combination.

As for washing it, go with what the "experts" have said. I am a newbie.

ptquilts 09-19-2010 12:36 PM

You could also take a wet white washcloth and go over the purple to see how stable the color is.
I don't know if I would trust a colorcatcher, have not had good luck with them.

I concur with the cold water.

Ramona Byrd 09-19-2010 12:38 PM

Lovely quilt. Congratulations.

wvdek 09-19-2010 12:41 PM

Your quilt is beautiful. Cold water, gentle cycle, Oxyclean and your mild detergent, softener. Gentle dry or hang to dry. I have never had to use Color Catchers, but then I pre-wash all fabric.
Good luck.

bearisgray 09-19-2010 12:43 PM

I think I would use a large front-loader washing machine -

If you have scraps of the fabrics you used - try washing them fist and see what they do -

virtualbernie 09-19-2010 12:54 PM

So so beautiful! I normally don't prewash either but if it's a color that I think might run (like your purplish), I test first. If it runs then I wash all fabric I'm going to use in that particular quilt (and grumble the whole time I'm ironing/starching it :) )

sueisallaboutquilts 09-19-2010 12:57 PM

You did a fantastic job on this quilt!! Just beautiful :D

jazzy519 09-19-2010 01:00 PM

If it bleeds dont dry it in a washer just keep washing with the color catchers

martapr 09-19-2010 01:03 PM

Great tips.... thank you soooooooooo much!

Good to know! Thanks!

It's going to be even prettier once you wash it. If that's even possible! I love the crinkly look of laundered quilts. What a great first quilt. You didn't mess around, did you?! Gentle everything and you should be fine. A color catcher or two can't hurt.

Beautiful quilt!!

Beautiful! Love your colors. What quilt pattern
did you use? I collect patterns. Very good job.

Actually, I improvised...I bought the book "Even more..Quilts for Baby" by Ursula Reikes - and the pattern is called "Pinwheel," however, there was something missing.. and so I decided that sashing and cornerstones would really make my quilt "POP" and it really did.

I agree on this too. Your quilt is beautiful.

Check your LQS for synthrapol. It is a detergent used in the wash-out of hand dyed fabrics. It keeps loose dye particles of dye in suspension so they don't stain other areas of the fabric. It can also be order online here,

Gday, what a beautiful first Quilt, and such a big one too, you have done a wonderful job.

Can someone explain what a colour catcher is, never heard of this before, i sometimes wash my fabrics, not all the time though, sew still yet to experience any shrinkage after putting a quilt together. Penny :)

wolfkitty 09-19-2010 03:51 PM

Some have said that the color catchers don't work well in the front loader washers. With something like this, would it be taken to a laundromat? It doesn't seem a top loader would be big enough for most quilts.

p.s. It's a beautiful quilt!

A color catcher is a sheet (it looks similar to a fabric sheet) that is placed in the washer and it catches any dyes that come off in the wash. They are made by shout brand products. I have has wonderful experience with them. From my understanding they don't work in a front load washer.

theoldgraymare 09-19-2010 04:10 PM

How wonderful for a first quilt! Are you sure it was your first? LOL

pennyj123 09-19-2010 04:13 PM

Thanks heaps for that, unfortunately i do have a front loader. bugga.

Was also wondering is it best to wash your quilts after finish making them. I am too frightened that it might fall apart. :?

I am hoping that i have done a good job, but there is always the thought that i haven't. I have completed a quilt as you go for a wedding present tossing up on whether to wash it b4 i give it away.

purplefiend 09-19-2010 04:14 PM

Marta,
Your quilt is gorgeous! I love the colors you used. Wash in cold water on the gentle cycle.

I always wash my quilts before I give them away. I have 4
dogs and gotta make sure that its furfree.
Your quilts won't fall apart if you've constructed them well&
used good quality fabrics. The recipient of your quilt will need to wash the quilt at some point.

rhuneslady 09-19-2010 04:20 PM

color catchers work great

martapr 09-19-2010 04:21 PM

Yes, this was my first quilt I made. I've made 7 since.

If giving as gifts, better you to wash it first than to give it away and the recipient washes and there's a problem with bleeding, weak seams, stray threads, whatever. That could be potentially embarrassing to you and/or them.

Just my two cents.

Eddie 09-19-2010 04:25 PM

First time in the wash I always use 2 Color Catchers in cold water.

Local quilt shop.

I couldn't do without my color catchers! I've never had any problems with them. I can pre-wash lots of different colors if I use the cc's. I did an "experiment" with reds, blues, yellows, and lots of different prints and colors just to see what would happen. Everything came out fine.

Good luck!

BTW, what a beautiful work of art.
