The sashing on my quilt is a purplish/pink batik and it needs to be cleaned. I attached a pic. What do you recommend?
|
Use a shout color catcher or maybe a couple of them in cold water on the gentle cycle.
|
did you make it? did you prewash the fabric?
very nice colors and design,by the way. |
Love your quilt.
|
Gentle detergent, gentle cycle and color catchers :D:D:D

Yes I made it. My first quilt. I did not prewash fabric.

Your quilt is truly beautiful. Both the colors and design are a great combination.
As for washing it, go with what the "experts" have said. I am a newbie. |
You could also take a wet white washcloth and go over the purple to see how stable the color is.
I don't know if I would trust a colorcatcher, have not had good luck with them. I concur with the cold water. |
Lovely quilt. Congratulations.
|
Your quilt is beautiful. Cold water, gentle cycle, Oxyclean and your mild detergent, softener. Gentle dry or hang to dry. I have never had to use Color Catchers, but then I pre-wash all fabric.
Good luck. |
I think I would use a large front-loader washing machine -
If you have scraps of the fabrics you used - try washing them fist and see what they do - |
So so beautiful! I normally don't prewash either but if it's a color that I think might run (like your purplish), I test first. If it runs then I wash all fabric I'm going to use in that particular quilt (and grumble the whole time I'm ironing/starching it :) )

You did a fantastic job on this quilt!! Just beautiful :D
|
If it bleeds dont dry it in a washer just keep washing with the color catchers
|
Great tips.... thank you soooooooooo much!

It's going to be even prettier once you wash it. If that's even possible! I love the crinkly look of laundered quilts. What a great first quilt. You didn't mess around, did you?! Gentle everything and you should be fine. A color catcher or two can't hurt.

Beautiful quilt!!

love your quilt

Beautiful! Love your colors. What quilt pattern
did you use? I collect patterns. Very good job. |

Actually, I improvised...I bought the book "Even more..Quilts for Baby" by Ursula Reikes - and the pattern is called "Pinwheel," however, there was something missing.. and so I decided that sashing and cornerstones would really make my quilt "POP" and it really did.

Check your LQS for synthrapol. It is a detergent used in the wash-out of hand dyed fabrics. It keeps loose dye particles of dye in suspension so they don't stain other areas of the fabric. It can also be order online here,

Gday, what a beautiful first Quilt, and such a big one too, you have done a wonderful job.
Can someone explain what a colour catcher is, never heard of this before, i sometimes wash my fabrics, not all the time though, sew still yet to experience any shrinkage after putting a quilt together. Penny :) |
Some have said that the color catchers don't work well in the front loader washers. With something like this, would it be taken to a laundromat? It doesn't seem a top loader would be big enough for most quilts.
p.s. It's a beautiful quilt! |

How wonderful for a first quilt! Are you sure it was your first? LOL
|
Thanks heaps for that, unfortunately i do have a front loader. bugga.
Was also wondering is it best to wash your quilts after finish making them. I am too frightened that it might fall apart. :? I am hoping that i have done a good job, but there is always the thought that i haven't. I have completed a quilt as you go for a wedding present tossing up on whether to wash it b4 i give it away. |
Marta,
Your quilt is gorgeous! I love the colors you used. Wash in cold water on the gentle cycle. |

Your quilts won't fall apart if you've constructed them well& used good quality fabrics. The recipient of your quilt will need to wash the quilt at some point. |
color catchers work great
|
Yes, this was my first quilt I made. I've made 7 since.

If giving as gifts, better you to wash it first than to give it away and the recipient washes and there's a problem with bleeding, weak seams, stray threads, whatever. That could be potentially embarrassing to you and/or them.
Just my two cents. |
First time in the wash I always use 2 Color Catchers in cold water.

I couldn't do without my color catchers! I've never had any problems with them. I can pre-wash lots of different colors if I use the cc's. I did an "experiment" with reds, blues, yellows, and lots of different prints and colors just to see what would happen. Everything came out fine.
Good luck! BTW, what a beautiful work of art. |
