kheliwud 04-12-2011 06:06 PM

I am a bit of a rebel. And it is said confession is good for the soul, so, here goes!

I do not pre-wash my fabric.
I often piece batting scraps together for large quilts. (I hate waste!)
I use fusible web to correct small "oopsies".
I fantasize about quilting!
I can not resist fat quarters, especially brightly colored bundles!
I quilt in my pajamas all day on Saturdays
I love, really love, free motion quilting

Any other confessions out there?

fabric_fancy 04-12-2011 06:09 PM

ditto to all of the above except i don't sew on the weekends and i never buy FQs.

and i'll add to the list that i use polyester thread for my LAQ.

kheliwud 04-12-2011 06:16 PM

Love your avatar!

I use polyester thread when I FMQ

TonnieLoree 04-12-2011 06:25 PM

I use blankets instead of batting and backing.
I use old mattress pads instead of batting.
I don't pick out the small threads if I have a (god forbid) repair to make.
Half the time I'm not even aware of the content of my thread because it has been donated and many of the labels have fallen off.
I don't vacuum the house before company comes over if I have a valid project underway.
I use paper-plates and forks so I don't have to wash dishes.
I have told my dad that I wasn't feeling well just to avoid going over to my parents house when it is Polka Time on their TV.
I have let my cat eat tuna because I had spent the last of my money on a piece of fabric instead of cat food.
I have used the front load washers at the laundromat when I have needed to wash a rag-quilt, even though the sign specifically says DO NOT.
Is that enough? I probably could go on and on and on. :-)
The worst one of all, sometimes even I ignore my own advice.

luvnquilt 04-12-2011 06:25 PM

I never use a pattern so far(I'm not making works of art, I'm just having fun), I just let the quilt evolve as I go... but I feel more creative and I'm motivated to move on to the next project so it's not too bad - oh and I stink at my 1/4", I usually just make everything fit in spite of some variances.

incoming2me 04-12-2011 06:37 PM

It's nice to see that I'm not the only one that the fabric/quilting police can lock up.

I do not pre-wash my fabric.
I often piece batting scraps together - I do a lot of QAYG and it's a great way to use up scrap batting.
I have resorted to pizza delivery when I just really didn't want to stop quilting in order to cook.
I have bought mass quantities of fabric on sale (read: Joann's 50% off of 50% off sale) and sneaked it in the house when DH was oblivious.
There have been frustrating quilting days that I have un-sewn more than I have sewn.
I made a quilt for a friend and his wife (finished in November 2010) and STILL have yet to meet up with them to give it to them - and they have no idea I made it for them - they live only an hour away.

BKrenning 04-12-2011 06:44 PM

I don't really care what type thread I'm using to piece or quilt as long as it is the right color & weight that I want and my machine will behave with it.

I have used Fray Check to fix seams that popped in the wash. I wasn't always as consistent with my 1/4" seams as I am now.

I have and will continue to use good sheets for backing. What else are you supposed to do with a flat sheet that has lost it's fitted sheet?

I often piece batting for smaller projects from scrap batting.

The "stuffing" in my tablerunners is practice sandwiches from different quilting designs and/or threads.

I will shop at any store that sells cotton fabric and I will buy any fabric that is acceptable to my standards and is a fair price including used cotton clothing.

I bought a queen size acrylic blanket from the clearance aisle at Walmart to use as batting "in a pinch." Hubby thinks it's to keep my feet warm at night since it's laying across the bottom of our bed---ssshhhh!

jojo47 04-12-2011 10:16 PM

Ditto to all of the above! :D

sjscribe 04-12-2011 10:35 PM

:) I never fully follow a pattern...I alter it in some way.

Sienna's GiGi 04-12-2011 11:27 PM

I pass time at work daydreaming about quilting.

I fantasize about cutting up people's clothes while they are wearing them if I like the colors and suspect the clothing is cotton.

I play with fabric at my work space. There is a pile of fabric under my desk right now that I haven't caressed and folded yet. The boss won't leave. I'm irritated.

I don't do patterns.

The smell of fabric is soothing.

I piece batting because I'm not trying to spend fabric money on it.

I'm quilting...I will eat later, maybe tonight, maybe tomorrow...just let me finish...

quilting.addict 04-13-2011 12:21 AM

I stay up too late reading the quilting board.
I love walking thru fabric stores and stroking bolts as I pass them by.
I hide fabric in my trunk, until DH is not looking. Then I carry fabric into the house at the bottom of my grocery bags.
I had a friend who was moving to Germany in May. I asked her did she have a sewing machine to sell. She said yes. She sent it by way of her husband. I saw the black wooden case and my heart leaped!! I asked her how much it was. She said, nothing. Just take it as a gift. It is a 1938 FW....I feel guilty I didn't tell her it was a treasure....

Grandmama Pat 04-13-2011 05:36 AM

If I see a bolt of fabric that grabs my attention, then I buy a piece even though I don't yet have a purpose for it.

I love fabric stores. Haven't yet tried Goodwill for men's shirts or ladies dresses to cut up. Might try that in the future. Fabric prices are getting outrageous.

I don't have enough sewing time. Hopefully in the future I will. Probably going to retire.

chris_quilts 04-13-2011 08:33 AM

I hide vintage sewing machines that I have bought until I can get them in the house when DH and DD's are oblivious.
I have too much fabric and keep buying more.
I only use cotton thread but don't much care if it matches what I'm sewing.
I mend once per year b/c mending isn't imoprtant to me but quilting is.
I ignore evrything when I'm on a roll - who cares if house gets straightened or teenagers get fed?

amma 04-13-2011 09:28 AM

Hello from another rebel :D:D:D

I am known for breaking all of the quilting rules, just to see why it is a rule to begin with LOL
Disastrous results? sometimes...
New ideas, techniques, or just a great time trying to make it work? Always!! :D:D:D

Melinda in Tulsa 04-13-2011 11:19 AM

All of the above!! And I never buy fabric with a project in mind. If I like it, can afford it, I'll buy it. Projects will come later!

kraftykimberly 04-13-2011 12:10 PM

I've never paid full price for a piece of fabric.
I've used batting scraps as small as 1/4" wide, lined up side by side in making purses and purse handles, no batting scrap is too small
Sometimes my bobbin thread and my top thread dont match
I've cut out the elastic from a fitted sheet, squared the sheet and used it as backing.
I never pin anything, takes too much time.
I always flip my rotary blade at least once before I get a new one
I get purses at Goodwill just for the handles and the hardware
I dont use my fancy needle threader on my Horizon because it takes longer to do than just sticking the thread in the eye
Im no longer scared of my walking foot
Im completely terrified of the quilt police, Im convinced every quilt I make has a flashing neon sign that only the QP can see. I've read the horror stories here in reference to the "mean quilters", I just dont want to meet any in person.

StitchinJoy 04-13-2011 12:16 PM

I started quilting in 1969 to "use up" two big bags of sewing scraps from clothing projects. I have accumulated fabric stash for over 40 years. I bought fabric in the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, aughts, and I still like it all.

Now I have cotton fabric and/or quilts in every room of my house except the bathroom and kitchen. So much for using up those two bags of scraps!

jljack 04-13-2011 12:30 PM

OK, my turn.

I have told DH several times that I won't buy any more fabric, because my shelves are packed full. But I still cannot pass up fabric that catches my eye and I can "see" in a quilt in my mind.

When I get new fabric home, I have to sneak it in, and if he notices it (not often!), I tell him, oh, it was at the bottom of a pile in the back, and I was looking at it earlier today! :-P

I don't measure my quilts to cut my borders. I sew the strips for the borders to each side and trim off the excess, then I sew the top and bottom strips on and trim them. I NEVER get wavy borders, although the Quilt Police claim you will get them EVERY TIME if you do it like me.

I put lots of colors together that some people think are "weird".

I get tired of and impatient with every quilt about 1/2 way through. I can't wait for it to be finished so I can MOVE ON@!@!

DH doesn't know that I have a 1928 Singer Model 99 sewing machine stashed away on the bottom shelf in my sewing room. He is so unobservant, it will probably be there for years and I will have to actually take it out and show it to him!! :-) LOL

Terryl 04-13-2011 12:36 PM

I had a couple of seams come apart after the quilting/binding was done, I just whip stitched them closed and pretended I meant to do the quilt that way, (it was a chemo quilt for my brother). I didn't even bother to tell him :) :) I scrounge through my scraps to piece projects, I use left over binding for 2 1/2 inch strips for another project, shall I go on?...........as jijack said, I NEVER measure for borders and they come out just fine.

Teddybear Lady 04-13-2011 12:57 PM

I see I am not alone in my little world. haha "Quilting police" ...who are they and who really cares. You ladies just made my day!

Annaquilts 04-13-2011 01:05 PM

I sew my binding on by machine.
I piece left over batting to make a a larger bat.
I stay up way too late inorder to sew.
I am a compulsive quilter.
I have stopped washing fabric if it is straight off the bolt.
I mix washed and unwashed fabric in my quilts.

moreland 04-13-2011 02:28 PM

Whee--I could have written the above. They fit me exactly!

susanwilley 04-13-2011 02:42 PM

My laundry, my bathroom, my sink full of dishes, heck all of my household chores DO NOT GET DONE. I really need to stop putting off the bathroom though.

Shelbie 04-13-2011 03:21 PM

I love using Polydown batting as it quilts, washes and wears well. The cotton only batting people in my guild would shudder I'm sure but it works for me and the quilts I make. I use Polyester thread and sheets on the backs of most of my quilts. I don't pre-wash my fabric and have never suffered a running dye nightmare. I always machine stitch my binding and even machine stitched my vintage Dresdan plate quilt.

Stitchnripper 04-13-2011 03:23 PM

I love all of these! I have done most of them myself.

redmadder 04-13-2011 03:30 PM

If its a rule, I've broken it.
And I love every quilt I see.
I would never put a quilt in competition.
My college history project was a quilt. Got an A!
I'm a slut when it comes to 100% cotton fabric. If I like it, I take it home.

sharoney 04-13-2011 03:33 PM

OK, this is the worst one of all...
I have been known to press a quilt in progress FROM THE TOP and not care how it looks on the underside.
Oh the shame!

Anna, can you tell me how you piece batting? Do you overlap it or butt it? do you straight stitch or zig zag? i have thrown away alot of small batting pieces (strips of 12" x 80") many times..

aurora41 04-13-2011 03:59 PM

Now I know why we love this board, we could go to confession without going to church. We all have the same sins. I love fabrics, I think of fabrics and quilts even I am in church. First think that comes to mind when I wake up it is... You guess it: "Fabrics" I buy fabric with no project in mind. Just because I like it. Ideas will come later.
Are we absolved from our sins? Yes, we are.

What do you mean "sins"? You mean it's sinful to love fabric so much????? cause I REALLLLLY love fabric...a lot!! and I too am always planning a quilt in my head..

chris_quilts 04-13-2011 05:44 PM

Not a sin!!! Just normal quilters fixations/addictions. :-)

incoming2me 04-13-2011 09:56 PM

Jeannie - Anna will surely chime in on your question!

I butt the pieces of batting together and join them with a a large zigzag to make bigger pieces.

I'm curious to see if anyone else does it differently!

Little RoO 04-13-2011 10:21 PM

Quilting in your pyjamas is simply the best.....and pretending to your neighbours that you simply are not in !!

OMG, so do I - there are moments I wish I had a pair of scissors when I am following someone who has such pretty fabric in their skirt / shirt... I have even told that person (when waiting together at traffic lights) what I was thinking as I was following them and we have had a great laugh about it.

LOL. For a minute I thought I was the only one and that maybe I confessed too much!

Annaquilts 04-14-2011 04:55 AM

I just liberally overlap and then use a walking foot on a very large both long and wide zig zag. After I am done quilting I can not find it back in which quilt had pieces and which did not. I use mostly warm and natural but other bats too. I do take care to match the batting so I do not use Hobbs 80/20 in one piece and the other warm and natural. So when I save batting I store like batting together. I hope this helps.

Oh if I have very fluffy batting like a medium pollyester one I might just hand sew it with some big stiches.

MrsM 04-14-2011 05:10 AM

I have never seen myself in so many postings before.
I have taught my children, (in their 20's), to put my packages in my sewing room so their Dad doesn't see them first.
I just placed a large fabric order last night with Connecting Threads, breaking my word that I would use up all my fabric before buying more, *sigh*.
My foot just reached for my sewing pedal to advance the computer  .

quilting.addict 04-14-2011 07:49 AM

ok, this will be the worst confession so far:
I got a nice Viking Freesia 415 several years ago. I started making quilts....lots of quilts...and I taught myself to do FMQ, but in SEVEN years, I never took my bobbin area apart to clean out the lint!!! Didn't know you could/should!!!! My son came to my rescue when I complained about the machine not sewing right. He got tweezers and brushes and went to work! He tells everyone he got out enough lint to batt a small baby quilt!!!

Sienna's GiGi 04-15-2011 01:29 AM

I thought about all of the confessions on this board and decided NO MORE FABRIC until I get to the states. I honetsly don't know if I COULD do that. There are so many sales online that i don't know what to do. The prices are even good with shipping!

Vickymomof6 04-15-2011 02:22 AM

"I fantasize about cutting up people's clothes while they are wearing them if I like the colors and suspect the clothing is cotton."

I had to laugh out loud on this one because I have done this too, men's shirts sometimes give me that little trill like when you have found that just right fabric!

I used to wash ALL my fabric but now I use some washed and some not.
I use up half used bobbins no matter what type of thread is or color in there, mixing thread types in the same quilt.
I have a real "thing" for half square triangle quilts.
I piece battings.
I love scrappy!
I really wish I could free motion quilt but I just can't get "it"
