I go back to work tomorrow. I teach Kindergarten and i can tell you after a day with 5 year olds all i can do is lie on the couch. I love my job, but August 1....really.
Be sure to post lots of pics to get me motivated by the weekend! Lol

moonwork42029 07-31-2011 02:28 PM

Since my granddaughter is now a kindergartener, I don't know how you have the energy to last all day with a whole herd of them, let alone just one.

Bless you the teachers for ye are special!

cmagee84 07-31-2011 02:28 PM

Wow1 That is early!! Are you on the year round schedule? If not, then you should get out in April!!!

Maybe you can reserve some energy for the weekends.

biotechlady 07-31-2011 02:28 PM

I go back the 18th to work with high schoolers. So I know what you mean. :). Have a good school year.

fabric_fancy 07-31-2011 02:31 PM

why is school starting so early this year?

the first day here is 9/8

np3 07-31-2011 02:35 PM

School starts a different days. It is a local decision. I find quilting to be relaxing and head for my sewing room when I am stressed or exhausted.

OneMoreQuilt 07-31-2011 02:40 PM

Wow, that's early!!! My grandson begins next Monday, the teachers start this week----also in Indiana. I begin the 22nd with my second graders!

SueDor 07-31-2011 02:49 PM

Have a good year in teaching ladies, and when you can go to your sewing machine and start sewing.

SuziC 07-31-2011 02:56 PM

WOW that is early. They don't start school here until Sept. I hope you can find some "me time" with your busy schedule. Maybe even 30 min a day???

frarose 07-31-2011 03:02 PM

Yep schools are starting earlier every year. I realize the classrooms are a/c but what about recess and the ride on those buses. I have taught at schools with no a/c but we didn't start until after labor day and even then some days were so hot my hair would be wet with sweat. I don't know who decided to lengthen the school year.

Shelbie 07-31-2011 03:09 PM

Here in Ontario, school does not start until September 6th. For the first time since 1985, I have no children to send back to school. My youngest has just graduated and I have recently retired and probably won't teach until sometime in late September or early October. It is strange not to have to do "back to school shopping".

Maia B 07-31-2011 04:15 PM

I'm fortunate. My kids go to a private religious school, and this year they don't start until 9/6. It's very hot for the teachers, even with the A/C. I'm happy to help them anyway I can.

Painiacs 07-31-2011 04:25 PM

Thank you all u teachers! It's not an easy job, pay and benefits aren't great but I appreciate it!!!

lots2do 07-31-2011 04:51 PM

Wow! I don't start with kids until Sept. 1 or so. But we don't have AC. Well, the library does with all of the computers and the main office does but the classrooms do not.

sweetpea 07-31-2011 04:57 PM

how about the kids on the bus's, I have kids on for 1 hr and 45 min. that is a long time on a HOT bus for tham and ME 2hr for me.

marscrafter 07-31-2011 05:05 PM

Thanks for all the hard work you do. It is really appreciated by the kids, I still remember my favorite teachers from when I was a kid. :-) Hope you can get some good sewing time in again soon.

BellaBoo 07-31-2011 05:24 PM

Thank you for wanting to be a teacher. My youngest DD graduated with a teaching degree. She was a first grade teacher for one semester and declared she didn't like it at all! She never taught another class after that first year. LOL.

tellabella 07-31-2011 06:30 PM

We start Sept 6...always after Labour Day weekend...last year we had a little glitch in the contract and had to go in for 1 day the week before..it was strange...
I wouldn't mind starting in mid August and get a little more time off in Feb and April...a very dear friend of mine moved back home to Mass...and we taught together for years in Toronto...we were just talking about that and how she prefers the breaks throughout the year...
This September will be my second last Sept before retirement...but who's counting...lol..

Pam B 07-31-2011 06:43 PM

Hi...I teach KDG, as well and I can totally relate to what you are saying. I start back on Weds. the 17th and we have students on the 19th. DH knows to be very considerate of me the first few weeks of school as I am exhausted at the end of each day and, after having been oh so very patient all day long, I sometimes 'lose' it in the evenings! LOL

I see you are in IN, as well as me. Sure hope your school has air-conditioning!

Good luck to you during these first few weeks of school!
Pam

Me too! Except I teach elementary. I live near the post in Missouri.

quiltingcandy 07-31-2011 10:51 PM

All the schools in Chula went year-round, they started on 7/20.

luana 08-01-2011 03:15 AM

I am a retired teacher and I wish all of you a fantastic school year. We need good people in our classrooms, and I happen to think quilters are GOOD PEOPLE :-)

Good teachers and good child care providers are worth their weight in gold!!

ccthomas 08-01-2011 03:40 AM

I go back August as well. College level - six classes to teach for 15 weeks. Fast paced, lots of grading.

donac 08-01-2011 03:57 AM

I go back in one month. I have so much to do this week. Dh is hiking with a friend for the week. Next week we go back to painting the house.

RenaB 08-01-2011 03:58 AM

My dd goes back Aug 15th. Yes, bless you teachers because I can only handle the two I have.

hcarpanini 08-01-2011 04:12 AM

We really start early this year here in Indiana. I am glad I am out of the school system and my kids are out of school. With this heat, I am sure there are going to be many half days anyway! Why can't they wait until after Labor Day?

BarbaraSue 08-01-2011 04:25 AM

I can fully underwtand that you are too pooped to be creative with a room full of 5y/o!! My DGD is only 3 y/o and she, alone, runs my energy way down.

I truly thank you for this sacrifice/service for the little ones.:)

Sewlmatesister 08-01-2011 04:44 AM

Wow, back to school already???

Amythyst02 08-01-2011 04:48 AM

Bless all of you teachers, for everything you do, I know it cannot be easy somedays.

reginalovesfabric 08-01-2011 04:59 AM

I know what you mean, my 3 year old g baby and her mother are coming to live with me and I'm trying like heck to finish up lots of projects before October, I want them to come live with me my g baby has special needs and I need to help my daughter. I am so happy they'll be here soon.

My sewing can be put on hold for a while

WMUTeach 08-01-2011 05:01 AM

Bless you teachers. I was one of you and for years cherished the summer months. I taught students from age 3 years to fourth grade. August is early to start but... lucky Michigan folk, classes are not allowed to start until after Labor Day by law. The down side to the later start is students often are in the classroom until mid June and it is HOT and most schools don't have air conditioning. Cranky kiddos! (Sometimes teachers too!)

I teach university classes now and start in a few weeks. Like any teacher I am up to my neck with planning, planning, planning. No more or less work than kindergarten, just taller students. I am quilting like a mad lady these last few weeks because I know when September begins, I will have to clean up the sewing room and look forward to week-end only quilt adventures. I too come home at the end of the day and fall on my couch or big chair exhausted. Working with a couple of hundred college students can be like herding cats. I really like my work, but it is that, work. Quilt on teachers and the Christmas holiday break is only 5 months away! Tee-Hee

mollybluebonnet 08-01-2011 05:06 AM

Bless all of you teachers! I would not even be able to read today if it hadn't been for a kind teacher who stayed after school to help my sister and me after we moved and were way behind in the new school. You are each the rock upon which our childrens' future depends. I only wish that more people appreciated and rewarded you as you so richly deserve.

NY is one of the few states left that start in September. It's based on the old farming schedules of the 19th century. Children were needed at home for harvesting, seed planting and garden tending and then out of the way at other times so most northern states adopted a more steady Sept.-June schedule instead of their Nov.-April that they were doing here and there.

I know how you feel, to an extent. I homeschool my daughters but since they're in 2 different grades, sometimes I feel like I'm surrounded with kids and questions. We live in NY (that has a Sept.-June schedule) but we homeschool from Aug.-May. We start three weeks from today and I'm trying desperately to finish a baby quilt for a friend and my oldest daughter's birthday quilt before that time.

Rosie the "Ripper" 08-01-2011 05:18 AM

I have been retired from teaching for five years now. Put in 35 yrs and said goodby. When I started, and for a long time after, we started classes on the day after Labor Day. Great!! Right?? Well, we were still in school June 11, and if we had snow days to make up, even longer. We didn't have a/c. After 20 yrs., Mother's Club bought us ceiling fans!!! I remember one week when temp. went to 105*
I must sound "ancient" but I would much rather have gone back in August!
You will start "enjoying" after you see the kids! I miss them alot.

Mickie612 08-01-2011 05:21 AM

I want to ask a question. Why is school starting so early? It does not seem fair to students and teachers. Are the kids really learning more? I guess I am getting to the age of not wanting to change.

Eliebelle 08-01-2011 05:26 AM

Mine go back Aug 17 - let the quilting begin!!! I have a 1st and 3rd grader and I'm 63!! We adopted my husbands great-grandchildren 6 years ago - God has a wonderful sense of humor!! Please don't misunderstand - I ADORE them, but groups of children give me hives and I admire you teachers more than I can say!
