My sis seemed to be developing an interest in quilting, so I gifted her a quilt class. It was for the basics. She went, and loved it!
She also took every word as the quilting gospel.
I now know that:
I use my rotary cutter improperly.
My bobbin thread is not always the same color as the top thread.
I incorrectly mix my fabrics in the same quilt. ( Joanns, WalMart and LQS) Oh! The horror!!
I sometimes use a sheet for backing.
I sometimes use dishes, lids or whatever instead of proper templates.
I don't really NEED all the rulers I have.
I don't always follow the pattern.
Bless her well meaning heart, I love her dearly but if she says just ONE MORE thing about my methods or lack thereof, I will beat her to death with my stash.
I sent her the link to this board, she will learn much more here from all of you talented folks.

She sounds like a new quilter. It takes a while before you give yourself permission to "color outside the lines."

Methinks you helped create a monster!

Give her some time. It takes some of us a while to know where/when the "rules" can be bent or totally ignored.

Guess you should teach her to be a rebel! LOL

Oh, sisters...you gotta love 'em. I have one just like her; thank goodness my other sister doesn't give a hoot!

Just goes to show 'a little knowledge...' can be a damned annoying thing! LOL

ckcowl 09-25-2011 09:38 AM

just remind her- quilting is as individual as each of us- and just because one person says 'this is the right way' it does not mean it is for everyone- it's only the right way for that person...she will relax as she gets some experience (maybe) i do know quilters who have used the same everything for 25+ years- done everything the same way- and feel anyone who says they do it differently are....well- not to be listened to....there will always be those people
it does not matter if you know a new- better- easier technique --- if it's not the way they were taught- it is wrong-period! you just have to smile- and walk away-

You truly have given me the highlight of the day, I am still laughing. I am soooooo glad my sister does not quilt. Her nick name is: "She Who Must Be Obeyed while Planning All Spontaneity"

Maybe she just realized how much she could annoy you and went for it? Kind of like those annoying Whitney commercials where she says the silent treatment doesn't work - if you want to annoy him (or your sister in this case) just keep talking?

Tell her to follow the rules and see if hers come out any better than yours. Maybe then she will realize, rules are meant to be broken.
