My sister's dream quilt

My sister wants this in a quilt http://cdsweb.cern.ch/record/1294059
She doesn't quilt, I do. Am I this nice a sister? I haven't decided yet if I want to tackle something like this. Assuming I decide to take the plunge, anyone have suggestions?

TanyaL 11-14-2012 08:35 AM

Do you paint or dye fabric yourself? The color shading in the picture could be easily achieved if you color your own fabric. In fact, I think I would draw this out on a muslin sheet and then use fabric paint, paint sticks, or fabric crayons, etc. and just color the drawing. Then quilt it. You could get an exact copy in whatever size she wants. It looks like fun project to me. Just go for it.

mom2boyz 11-14-2012 08:52 AM

This actually looks similar to something my brother wants, and I don't think I'm that nice a sister. What in the world is this a picture of besides three large trash cans?

LOL. The mural on the wall is the CERN Large Hadron Collider. I need to figure out what is behind the trash cans, because I don't think she wants them in the quilt :) Check out these art quilts - all inspired by the Hadron Collider- this woman is amazing. http://art.findlays.net/bin/view/Main/HadronCollider

Sierra 11-14-2012 08:59 AM

I think Hal is in there! [2001: A Space Odyssey]

If you take it down to Staples, or a similar place, they will enlarge your on screen photo to whatever size you want. I've enlarged pictures by doing it my self, but the $20 or so I spend having them do it saves me days of effort. We may have an unusually sweet group at Staples here, but they always do exactly as I ask. Oh, the last thing that was enlarged for me was 1.5 inches short of the requested 4 feet! I told them it was fine. No one is ever going to know or care about that.

Toni C 11-14-2012 09:13 AM

Good Grief! What a project. Sierra is right go to Staples to enlarge it, draw templates on freezer paper and applique away. I see a LARGE design wall in your future LOL

Greenheron 11-14-2012 09:40 AM

Does she want a bed quilt or a wall quilt?

Print or have printed an image on fabric or transfer and use it as a medallion. Or multiples Warhol-style.

Grandma58 11-14-2012 09:59 AM

Email Cern and ask them for permission to use the photo for a quilt. Then send the photo with permission to Staples have them print it on big paper and go for it. What a cool idea. They might even have a better pic of the Hadron Collider for you to use, and actual image instead of a color drawing.

DogHouseMom 11-14-2012 10:00 AM

I think I would handle different elements in different ways to give it some dimension. Some parts as a "printed" copy or painted muslin (paint or crayon), some parts as layered raw edge applique (like a landscape quilt), and some of the detail parts thread painted.

willferg 11-14-2012 10:53 AM

I am definitely not that nice a sister. :D

fayzer 11-14-2012 11:27 AM

I absolutely would not be that nice. If you make it will you include the 3 dumpsters? :D Just kidding!

Wow. Just Wow. I am speechless seeing these quilts.

PaperPrincess 11-14-2012 02:15 PM

I would tell her that she was adopted.

LOL. Or I was.

Because a quilt need not be a direct representation --- think flying geese or log cabins --- why not make a derivative of this picture/poster/whatever it is? Use the same colors, approximate shapes, and a lot of artistic license to create your own art that "reminds" you and sis of this thing.

tezell0801 11-14-2012 05:53 PM

No, not me... she has no idea how much work his will be even for a favorite sister.

lfstamper 11-14-2012 05:58 PM

This is amazing. I have never seen something so spectacular. Your brother will know he is loved!

Holy yeow! She'd better hope she never bit you or anything.

KwiltyKahy 11-14-2012 06:48 PM

All I can say is GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!

Judith1005 11-14-2012 06:48 PM

hmm, looks like a project that could take a long time to complete. Especially if you have a full time job. It's interesting. But, I personally would have a hard time with it. Very much not my style. But, I actually can visualize a quilted project with it........It would definitely be a conversation piece. Good luck with whatever you decide.

mom2boyz 11-14-2012 07:40 PM

Wow Kristakz, I thought it looked sort of "spacey". My brother wants GLAST or the Gamma-Ray Large Area Space Telescope. He is a particle physicist and this is a project he was working on. We all traveled to Florida to see it launched, but alas, the mission was scrubbed. He went back to FL a couple weeks later and the mission was scrubbed again only to launch a few days after he returned to Palo Alto. I will be watching this thread with great interest, maybe I'll turn out to be a good sister after all. Just don't hold your breath.

mom2boyz 11-14-2012 08:42 PM

This is just a p.s. to my last post. I wanted to ask what is your sister's interest in the colider? and a p.p.s. I'm sure my brother would love that quilt too, so if you decide to make one, could you just make two? hee hee

SEW 11-15-2012 03:28 AM

Your sister is testing you...

Geri B 11-15-2012 03:55 AM

why???? I certainly would not want to cuddle up with that?????? or even use as a wall warmer!!!!!!

My sister is an engineer (as am I), and she is very interested in all things science. She has been following news about the collilder since they started building it. She's a bit weird :)

lisalovesquilting 11-15-2012 04:47 AM

If you do, I think she'll owe you big time!:)

Pieces2 11-15-2012 05:22 AM

This is a painted mural, not a quilt pattern. I would not do this in a quilt. Wait until she picks out a reasonable quilt pattern. This is a project that can take years and hundreds of dollars to make. Just searching for the right fabrics will require hours of time and gas at $$$. I think she is asking too much of you. What/where does she plan to use this quilt?
I love my sister too, but this is way over sister obligations. :)

Me either.

jbj137 11-15-2012 09:13 AM

Good luck
I am not going to try it.

Stitchit123 11-15-2012 09:13 AM

Oh my -Would she settle for a poster for her wall. I might have tried this years ago but now I try to keep life simple

wildyard 11-15-2012 09:21 AM

LOL, I think I might get a good sized photo and transfer it to fabric and then add borders around it with that photo as the center panel. Beyond that, I know that project is way out of my skill range.
The only suggestion I'd have for before you start the larger more complex project is to umm.... get your head examined? LOL, Just kiddinggggggg!!!!!!!!!!! Smilessss and hugggggggs and tons of luck if you decide to tackle such an overwhelming project!

LOL!

I think I'm going to try to transfer it into EQ7 as a patchwork project. Tracing the picture should give me a starting point. I need to ask her what size quilt she had in mind - I could do a wall quilt of just the middle with the reaction/light rays. Or the whole thing if she's thinking bed quilt, but that's definitely more work and verging into head examination territory :)

Suziuki 11-15-2012 01:48 PM

I would go for it, I have three sisters and if any of them asked me to do something like that I'd jump at the chance. No piece of fabric is going to get the better of me. I agree with Grandma58, you probably need permission to use the artwork, but go for it, don't rush it, slow and sure wins the day. If you go ahead progress pictures would be nice.

Annaquilts 11-15-2012 01:53 PM

Yup her dream quilt. She can dream about it. That looks way hard unless you take a picture and print it onto muslin.

Annaquilts 11-15-2012 01:53 PM

LOL Must belong to the around 50 crowd. I feel the same.

solstice3 11-15-2012 01:55 PM

I suggest you start with a good bottle of wine!!!! That is definitely out of my quilting ability

matraina 11-15-2012 03:51 PM

I know I wouldn't want to tackle it. Besides I already have too many to do's in quilting. I'm afraid I'd tell her no.

maryellen2u 11-16-2012 03:36 AM

You are all way nicer sisters than I am and a world of better quilters than I am too! Please give me updated pictures along the way so I can be amazed! Now I've got to return to my challenging rail fence!

Linda OH 11-16-2012 06:11 AM

OMG! The artist, Joseph Kristofoletti, is from my town. His sister was in my DD's class. He is an amazing artist.
