Very cool looking quilt. I love the design a lot!!

jojosnana 04-24-2011 01:03 PM

It is so cute. I love it. I have to say I have never used a one inch border but I really like the way it looks. Hope you don't mind, it is now on my list to try.

mzmama 04-24-2011 01:34 PM

The fabrics you chose were amazing

TownQuilter 04-24-2011 03:00 PM

Absolutely not! Depending on the design, I think the one inch borders can really set off a quilt.

However, I wouldn't applique the square on, I would make triangles to fit where the square is, sew each triangle to the inner corner of each triangle, flip the piece over and cut off the portion of the rectangle that the triangle covers for all four inner rectangle quarters, then sew together. Be sure you allow 1/4 inch seam allowance or your block will shrink 1/2 inch on all four sides.

Use the same technique that you would a Bow Tie block.

There is nothing like making a quilt and starting another at the same time using the triangles you cut off the rectangle.

The appliqued square is one thing I like about this pattern and it gives it some dimension. I used a blanket stitch on my machine to do the applique. You could also use a decorative stitch; however, none of these fit the modern look of the fabric.

The rectangles are 5.5" x 10.5". The squares are 4.5" x 4.5" These are cut measurements. The sashing is 2" wide. You will be cutting two of the rectangle/square blocks in half and sewing a 1 1/4" strip of sashing to one end (the end with the half square), making sure you are placing the smaller sashing on the outside edge. This causes every other row to be off set. The pattern goes into how to cut the pieces to avoid wasting fabric. I have 13 full blocks and 4 half blocks. Finished size is 70" x 80" Again, the name of this pattern is Ten Minute Tiles by Mary Lou Hallenbeck.

I think this would make a perfect quilt for a male, even with the polka dots which I usually think of as feminine.

great job, thanks for sharing

Raksmum, The fabrics in my quilt, including the stripe were totally not something I would normally choose, but for some reason really caught my eye. I'm glad I choose to cut the stripe on the diagonal, even though it took more fabric.

FranW 04-25-2011 07:22 AM

The colors you chose are great! This quilt really pops!

I even taught my 8 yr. old DGD to use it with her own small blocks that she makes. It's SO easy. 8-)

Many have mentioned using the washable Elmers school glue stick...I hadn't realized you could use the white washable liquid glue as well! I almost donated about 10 bottles of it, left from school supply buying fever, when it was 25 cents a bottle last fall. I'm guessing you could get that tiny spout @ any pet supply store, medical supply, as well as farm & fleet type places. Seems like pet supply places would be cheaper than medical supply.
"We" need to make a list of great seasonal sewing supply deals; school supplies are typically August to October...some start as early as July. Love when they go clearance! Thanks a bunch!

chairjogger 04-25-2011 01:23 PM

fun ! and not square ! how did you decide what that would work out? long fabric layout?

Jere 04-25-2011 01:29 PM

That sure makes a striking quilt.

cabinfever 04-25-2011 01:31 PM

Sorry, I forgot to tell Rexene what a great design this is. I love the look & think I would use the "3-block seam" by O'Neill to sew it up quick. I love sashing, cornerblocks, & center-set blocks on point. Thanks for a great inspiration...beautiful!

Mazda 04-25-2011 01:32 PM

Beautiful!

Jammin' Jane 04-25-2011 01:33 PM

krafty14 04-25-2011 03:55 PM

I've taken three of Mary Lou's classes and they have been fun and she shares so many tricks, like using Roxanne's Glue to glue down the square (edges are turned under first). It holds the square in place while you applique it.

What is the name of this pattern and is there a tut on it? It is very different and looks fun.

As stated above, the name is 10 Minute Tiles by Mary Lou Hallenbeck. Check back on page 6 and I give the sizes of the squares, rectangles and sashing. More info is on page 1, where I started the thread.
