the serial number should be on the right front base.
have fun with your 201 -- it's supposed to be "the best machine singer ever made.

ps --- curious - what did you pay? my hubby got a filthy, rusty electric singer 15 for $5 at an auction when nobody would bid on it (with another machine and lots of parts). I cleaned it up, spent $10 on cords, $20 at sewing shop, and have a wonderful old (same age as me) machine.

Oh, wow! I've been reading many of the threads about vintage machines over the past several years. I knew my mom's old machine was buried in our garage. DH wanted to get rid of it many times but I hung onto it, just couldn't let it go. I told him just a few weeks ago I wanted to bring it in and take a closer look at it. It's not been used in 30 years.

When I saw your picture I couldn't believe it. It's my mom's machine! DH just went out to the garage to check. Same cabinet! They are sisters...mine has a serial number of AM552973 and yours is AM5661043.

The veneer on the table is shot, so I may not be able to salvage that, but I'm pretty sure the machine isn't too bad. DH and son are going to bring it in this weekend and we'll start to learn about 201s! It was used when Mom got it. I was told it had been a school home ec machine, and I remember it sewed great for my 8th grade home ec project. But mom really disliked sewing so it was seldom used other than patching some clothes. Thanks for posting your find! Mine's going to come into the house!

So glad you're going to resurrect your mom's 201. I have my mom's and my MIL's featherweights and smile every time I sew on them!

Oh my, I used to have a cabinet just like that one. Had to leave it behind when I moved many years ago. That sure is a beautiful machine. I don't have a clue how old she is but she wears her age well!

That is the machine I learned to sew on. My dad still uses it to repair everything. The only machine I have ever sewn on that will sew carhart jackets and several layers on demin with no problem. What a find. She will sew forever.
Enjoy!
