Nancy Zieman's Column quilt. Have you made one?

Has anyone made a column quilt like Nancy Zieman showed on her TV show? Did you like the process? Was it as easy as it looked on the show?

It looks like so much fun to me, and not very complicated or difficult. I would love to try one. Just looking for any hints or opinions that you may have, if you have made one.

Please show pictures if you have made one!

Quiltngolfer 12-01-2011 11:06 AM

I agree. It looks like fun. It is on my bucket list for when I finish my UFO's.

KerryK 12-01-2011 11:09 AM

What channel does she come on?

Nancy Zieman's sewing show is on PBS.

Drue 12-01-2011 11:40 AM

We don't get any of the sewing or quilting shows anymore and I really am dissappointed....When I worked I couldn't watch them except on weekends and now that I'm retired they're no longer on! BOOHOO!

deemail 12-01-2011 04:41 PM

first, Drue...check your computer by searching for the names of the shows you like...many of them are online and can be referenced and even watch whole shows....some cost to join but many are free...the ones on DIY tv channel often can be seen for free....

susie-susie-susie 12-01-2011 04:55 PM

We don't have any here either. I don't get it with so many quilters out there. There used to be so many on years ago. I guess we have to watch them on the computer.

I have made several and love doing it! Money was tight this summer and couldn't afford a long armer and this was a wonderful alternative. I used polyester batting on the first one and didn't like the way that one went together but it was my first. The second one I used flannel and while I liked the way it went together better it was really heavy. The third one I used a combination flannel on front column and muslin on back column and that is the best combination for me. All of mine were at least queen size (I'm a go big or go home kind of girl!!). I'm at work or I would post pictures. Will try to do it tomorrow.

Thanks for your interest in the Column Quilt design that I presented on TV. BTW, the most 52 current Sewing With Nancy shows are available online 24/7 at www.nancyzieman.com. If you missed a show or your PBS stations doesn't carry it, you can watch online.

I also did a variation of that quilt called "Quilt to Give," you can find the instructions on my blog—www.nancyzieman.com/blog. It's way to use of scraps of fabric and then give the quilt to someone in need.

Central Ohio Quilter 12-02-2011 10:20 AM

bjnicholson 12-02-2011 10:29 AM

It is great to know about the shows online -- I have been trying to make an ombre quilt and could not remember all the hints you gave in your shows.

Thanks again -- and welcome!!

Thank you so much Nancy! So wonderful to have you here with us. I always watched you shows and loved them. We used to get them when we lived up close to Shreveport thru the Shreveport Public Broadcasting....a wonderful system there, but when we moved to where we are now, we get nothing and the PBS station is the national station, obviously.....Really miss you! Thanks for your blog!

Ok kids please help me out here, how do I make sure I don't lose track of this thread of messages? I used to just add it to watched topics or book mark it. Am I right in assuming if I have made a response then it automatically subscribes me to this thread?
Thanks in advance.

Wow, so nice to "hear" from you Nancy. I have the column quilt on my list of quilts to make starting in January. I've got the episodes saved on my dvr and also have your sites bookmarked. I am so looking forward to making this quilt. I haven't decided on what colors to use yet though. Thanks so much for posting on the board.

We have only just started to get some craft stuff on a new channel, if you are lucky enough to be in an area that can receive the signal. There has been nothing for us in my area, so I watch Nancy Zieman and quilterstv and americasews etc. online. Hope this access continues as it is the only stuff worth watching...

olebat 12-03-2011 05:00 AM

Echoing the words of welcome to Nancy.

Central O Q, thanks for the post. I missed seeing that one. Although I often watch the shows of SWN & F&P, I don't always get up to watch by 0600, so record the shows. This looks like a good project for my 4-H students. With the recordings on the web, I can even save some lecture time and just "assign" the viewing as "homework". Quilting books are on sale at JA now, so will swing by today and hope they have it on the shelf.

sweet 12-03-2011 05:06 AM

I love the technique she showed, it looks so easy!

newestnana 12-03-2011 05:17 AM

Wow, how amazing that you found our board and gave a personal reply! Now I'll be spending the day watching your videos instead of cleaning, decorating, cooking, sewing...LOL

I'm so excited! I didn't know you could watch missed shows online! I just checked out the website and I've got some catching up to do!

Hi, I have both the video & the book for this quilt... It's on my "To Do" list as I just love the look of this quilt. I have a Long Arm now so may not do it as a QAYG but ... just the same..I do love the design of it. And now I read that we have the "Go To" person here if we have any problems. Welcome Nancy... have been a big fan and follower for years!

Snooks 12-03-2011 06:01 AM

Wow, I've watched your show & LOVED IT - your GREAT. Now on the long cold winter nights when I can't sleep I can watch your show. Thank you for the link.
