I made a memory quilt for my sister's 50th birthday. what I did was match novelty fabric to the photo.
for example - a picture of her and her son at the beach was bordered with a seaside pattern. A picture of us as children sitting on the front stoop in Brooklyn was bordered with trees (as in A Tree Grows in Brooklyn) I added a 3 inch border all around each picture - regardless of the orientation. Then I picked out a neutral background fabric and bordered the borders. I then cut the blocks to a size that accomodated the largest picture. (I believe I had 12 inch blocks) I sewed these together and then added a small border. I just stitched in the ditch around the pictures and borders and stippled the background. I don't have a picture handy, but it came out really nice.

Why don't you let your pictures be your guide. Lay them out and then vary your sashings to fit and then a simple border.

Where can I find the instructions on doing the photos themselves?

Buy a pkg of Printed Treasures or a similar product (there are many brands to choose from) and the directions will be on the package.

Thank you so much! I will do that.

Here are a couple I have done, but did not use a pattern with either of them. Just laid them out and went to work.

One is of a 3D shoot my guys went on, the second was made for a couple the host and teach the 4-H archery in our area, and the 3rd was for my folks 50th anniversary using border fabrics.

I did something similar to this. The photos were all different sizes, bordered in 3" fabrics that were all different. Pulled it together with a beautiful green....turned out gorgeous! No pattern involved :-D
