This is a quilt I am making for my niece's baby due in May. It only turned out to be 31x40 so I need to add some kind of border to make it a little bigger. What for a border? I wonder what my chances are of finding something to go with it. I bought the fabric 1200 miles away so forget going back to that shop to find a companion print. I don't think she had one anyway. What would you recommend?
A really deep dark blue would be pretty and not hard to match to this quilt. :D:D:D
How about using the cream or yellow (I can't tell which it is) in the background of the feature squares. Another thing would be to find a marble or small overall print in the greens that frame those feature squares. Take it with you to the quilt shop or fabric store. I am always surprised at the suggestions I get from both clerks and other customers! (of course not ALL their suggestions are good!!!!!
Do you think it should be a small print? The blue I already used has dog footprints on it. All the colors are a small print.
That is a darling quilt....and I personally think it is plenty big for a newborn. Do you have any of the fabric left to do another small border if you want to or just enough for your binding? If you want to add more I would pull a color as best as I could match that you think the new mother would like best.
I would pick the blue for an extra border.
I would go with a dark blue.
If you have a selvage edge of the blue or the green, see if you can find the specifics for the fabric - then you can do a fabric search online.
I'd try to find a creamy yellow like the background of the picture blocks.
If you know the fabric group name (check the selvedges), you might be able to find a coordinating fabric online -- or post an In Search Of on this board! |
I think I might just find a fabric close to the color of the paws to use as binding.
you could just find some creamy beige to match the focus squares or maybe the green.
Maybe navy, then a print incorporating the other colors?
My suggestion is to do 2 borders a 3" of the green then either the dark blue or more pink or even the cream outside border 5" wide. Green is so in now. For young girls it is becoming the new lavender
Cute quilt, nicely done |
One inch (cut 1 1/2) of a dark, then 2 1/2 inches (cut 3) of a light will bring it up to crib quilt size. The ones you purchase are often 36 x 45. Then a bright pink binding and you're good to go.
i think that a lovely cream or yellow (which ever the background color is) in a marble or toneal would look wonderful. as a nice 3" and then do a black boarder and binding to finish it off. but tht is must me.
Do you have much of the fabric left that you used in the quilt? I love piano key borders, and if you have enough, you could use that. Otherwise, I would try to find colors the same as you have used. Good luck... by the way, it's a darling quilt! :)
I too think it is big enough for a baby. Just finish it the size it is now. What cute fabric!!
I like the blue you used and that would look good as a broder if you can find a blue like it. Very cute quilt!

I think it is adorable! I would add a medium, dark blue border and then bind it with the pink.
I did an online search and found that there are some companion fabrics. Now to decide which one! The fabric line is called Lil Miss Cutie Patootie by Red Rooster. Thanks for all the great ideas. I'm not sure yet what I will do.
take it to your LQS maybe they will have a match for it.
Do you know what the baby will be?? is a boy or a girl? if it is a girl I would suggest a pink. BUT I am partial to a blue (Sorry my DW tells me I cannot match fabric too well) |
how about green or blue Polka dots? or a rosy pink?
I would try to find a fun stripe with those colors in it, then follow with a solid binding.
I echo the suggestion for a stripe. If not a stripe, I would definitely want a larger print that incorporated some of the colors in the quilt.
I like the green color but thats personal preference.Goota say though, I really like the little girls in the blocks! They are so cute!!!!

Gorgeous quilt :) |

I was thinking of dots too. I think you only need a small border and green dots would be cute. |
The picture blocks are from the fabric line Little Miss Cutie Patootie. You could do a fabric search on quiltshops.com Good Luck
I think a pieced border would work better than adding just a plain border. The entire quilt is made of strips, adding a pieced border would add a little interest to the quilt.
A checkerboard border is always cute on crib quilts. Use a tan fabric to match your blocks and a baby print that has blue/green/pink. Theres already a lot of solid fabrics in the quilt. I think it needs a cute little print to add some interest. |
i'd go for a stripe to bring the colors together. it's a very cute baby quilt.
I think it's a very pretty quilt. A soft cream/yellow border would be sharp against it.
Glad you were able to locate the fabric line. I also think that the striped self fabric, a.k.a. piano keys, would be the best accent border you could make. It's a darling print, and your layout has done it justice.
It looks finished to me! Lovely.
You could call the shop and see if they have coordinating fabric. They may ship it to you cheap. However you should be able to find other fabric at LQS or Joann's
My choice would be the green around each block. You should be able to match the color in a solid or a very small print.
I think this is so pretty, maybe make a piano key type border with all the colors already in the quilt.
Another vote for blue. I agree that it should not be too difficult to find a good companion blue.
I'd look for a stripe with some of the major colors in the quilt. Put the stripe vertically on top/bottom and horizontally on the sides.
Sorry...dupe post!
I went to a LQS and didn't find anything but at Jo-Ann's I found a cute one with a
white background and multi colored bubbles. I think I will use this for the backing. The quality just doesn't seem good enough to use on the front. I ordered 2 of the companion prints online last night. We'll see which one I choose....or maybe the piano keyboard....that sounds nice. How wide of strips to you sew together to make that? I'm pretty new to this and have never done it. |
