Ambitious, thoughtful project. Good luck with it but I'm zero help with the details.

You might try Pinterest. It seems you can find ideas for anything on there. You do have a great idea.
|
You might want to label each print with whose and when it was made - - - -

Not sure what you have in mind. Is this to be one quilt or several? How many hand prints do you have to work with? If its just one quilt perhaps a family tree in the center and use the hand print blocks for borders?

There are all sorts of cute ideas using handprints on pintrest. Most have to deal with children's handprints in preschools but most are simple and could be easily translated into fabric. The one I first thought of was the one where the hands are cut out and placed downward to resemble a tree. It could be your family tree. Don't forget to add a few nuts.

what a wonderful thing to do. A beautiful keepsake.

I remember a friend whose grown daughter asked for a quilt full of her mother's handprints. She said she wanted to wrap herself in her mother's arms, even when she was far away. Her mother outlined her hand and made blocks, where her hand was the center of each and filled up most of the block. She did each handprint in different fabric, I think. It was a bed sized quilt. Not sure if any of this info can help, but I know her mother really loved making the quilt and felt so loved that it had been requested. Her daughter also loved it.
It is just a beautiful idea. Dina |

There is a book called "Handprint Quilts" by Marcia L. Layton from Martingale Press, copyright 2003. There are some interesting layouts in it, and some have embellishments that are quite unique.

Here is a hand print quilt I did for a teacher. Sounds like a very nice undertaking.

A friend of ours used this in her wedding ceremony - she read it to her husband. She changed a few words to suit her needs - one could do it for a quilt.
"These are the hands of your best friend. They are holding yours on your wedding day as you promise to love each other today, tomorrow and forever. These are the hands that will work alongside yours as together you build your future. These are the hands that will passionately love you and cherish you through the years, and with the slightest touch will comfort you like no other. These are the hands that will hold you when fear or grief wracks your mind. These are the hands that will give you strength when you need it. May these hands always reach out with love, tenderness and respect. May these hands continue to build a loving relationship that lasts a lifetime." |
I can see the hands being leaves in a family tree or tree of life. Remember to name and date each one.
I have an old painted family tree from my eldest's dad's family. It has names on leaves and birthdates, plus marriage dates (year only). The last names were added to it in the early 1930's when Aunt Jane was born. |
I made a quilt for my Mother's 90th Christmas. I appliqued each hand print on a different solid color block for each family. Their children, grandchildren and great grands were cut out of medium and small florals, with the grandchildren of each family all the same and the greats of a different print. In the center I put a picture of my parents right after they were married. I titled it, "because 2 people fell in love". I also included a pink angel and a blue one, for the babies in heaven waiting for Grandma to rock them. I have never had any luck trying to post a pic, but willl try again.
I had no luck downloading a pic. I also put each person's first name and birth year on the solid part of the block. |

I made a quilt with handprints putting great grandmother in the middle and arranged her children next and then grandchildren, etc in two or three big circles. It really turned out nice.

A friend of mine posted this one that she made with preschool kids.

How about using the hand prints as "leaves" on a tree? You could embroider the names on each handprint. OR how about a heart using the hand prints. Good luck. Hope you will post a picture when completed.

I just did a quick search on yahoo search engine and entered "hand print poem" and got lots of results in the images that you might like as a starting point for your design.

Have a look at some of these. I like the one where the hands make a heart shape.

Many years ago my mentor who was almost 35 years older than me showed me a quilt she had made using handprints. Each member of her huge extended family had given her an outline of their hand remembering that the hand had to be drawn but another so that the dominant hand was the drawing. She then transferred their hand outline on to muslin which was then appliqued on to a printed calico fabric. Each hand included the name and date of birth of the individual. They also included things such as wedding rings or other rings. One member had lost a finger due to an accident and that hand print reflected the loss. Baby hands were also included. She treasured this quilt and when she became ill knowing her time on this earth was coming to an end she told her family that she wanted it to be wrapped around her before she was cremated.
When she told me this story at first I was so amazed at all the family members included in the quilt and that they were willing to participate. Then I thought how could her family bear to part with it when the time came. But it was Nellie's wish to have the love of her family comforting her until the end and beyond. She was very well loved by everyone who knew her. I think any way you decide to put your hand quilt together will be cherished by all who receive the love you put into it. |

I saw one (not sure where) that had a tree trunk and used the handprints as leaves on the tree. The tree was pieced and the 'leaves' were appliqued.
