I have a mystery quilt I just completed and need quilting design help. I would like to do some light custom work on it, as I am new to custom designs. Any help you can offer will be greatly appreciated!!

Wow! No advice on the quilting, but you did a great job selecting fabrics for a mystery quilt.

blueangel 06-07-2011 12:53 PM

Wow it's beautiful.

Nanny J 06-07-2011 01:00 PM

Beautiful!!!!!!!

paulswalia 06-07-2011 01:05 PM

someone else taught me this, so I don't take credit. Get a piece of clear plastic big enough to cover at least a quarter of the quilt. (Joanne's sells it off a roll where the drapery and upholstery fabric is). Lay it over the quilt top and draw quilting designs on it with a dry erase marker. You can erase the marker with a piece of batting. This allows you to audition quilting designs without harm to the quilt.

Beautiful colors. Love it!

Thanks, I actually have it on my computer and have been drawing for weeks!!! I am new to the quilting aspect of this and it is driving me nuts!!! I just don't now what to do. I see lots of stuff out there that is very intricate and I don't think I am ready for that yet, but I don't want to do a panto either!

I also have some clear plastic, so I guess I should try that too. Maybe it will look different than on the computer.

Thanks. It was really tough!! However, I can't take full credit. My LQS and friend helped a TON!!

Missysgottohelp 06-07-2011 01:42 PM

Wonderful colors. Nice work!

quilt1950 06-07-2011 02:37 PM

Any ideas why I can't see this quilt? Gremlins in my computer perhaps?

Holice 06-07-2011 02:43 PM

are you long arm quilting, domestic machine quilting or hand quilting

OMG - I should have said that!! I am longarm quilting it. Thanks for asking. :D

Holice 06-07-2011 04:07 PM

my first thought is to do a distinctive design (block design) over the star blocks then a running vine down each of the squares. Perhaps a meandering in the surrounding light sextions but not too close which would change the dimension of the overall look. My general rule is to do a consistent densisty overall the quilt. not too quilt more dense in some areas than others. There are many stencils that would fit in the blocks.

Love the colors!

I do that too, however you will want to mark the edges of the plastic as you don't want to get over-enthusiastic and run off the edge...I did this once and learned my lesson really quick ;)

Nice quilt

LindaM 06-07-2011 08:06 PM

Border the plastic in some blue painter's masking tape - will keep you inside the plastic. Use crayola washable markers! :)

I don't have any idea for a design but I would love to know the pattern. Your's is lovely.

SueDor 06-08-2011 04:21 AM

Love the quilt. What about a meandering/stippling with stars instead of loops.

#1piecemaker 06-08-2011 04:58 AM

I do a lot of shadow quilting so compared to others on this board, my quilting is boring!! Good luck!!

matraina 06-08-2011 05:05 AM

The quilt is beautiful; love the colors; can't help with the design. Good luck.

JeanLowe 06-08-2011 05:29 AM

Beautiful quilt!

sandpat 06-08-2011 05:36 AM

Wow, thats a beautiful quilt! It is a hard one to figure out the quilting for though, isn't it? I think I would really work with the plastic and dry erase marker on this one....I do that alot!

sidmona 06-08-2011 05:39 AM

Can't help with quilting ideas, but I love the quilt! It's gorgeous!

Thanks everyone for your nice comments! The pattern is from Debbie Caffrey. It was a mystery quilt I did on the QCA board a few months ago. It is called "Baubles and Beads."

Kathleen charnell 06-08-2011 08:58 AM

Love the colors , what is the pattern?

Thank you!! It is "Baubles and Beads" by Debbie Caffrey. It can be found at the Quilters Club of America (QCA) website. Look on the home page on the left side under Community Fun. You will see a link for Mystery Quilt Workshop #4.

Sorry, I am no help.

Cherokeequilter 06-08-2011 12:29 PM

This is really funny but I just finished this quilt design from a LQS at a retreat in the North Georgia mountains. After looking at this quilt for a long time, I decided to do a three leaf pattern in the lighter areas around the stars. I didn't want to make it too busy but wanted the stars to pop out so I highlighted them with outline stitching. For the small beading, I used a wavy line from corner to corner, following the pattern across the quilt. This brought out the beading. For the larger beading I used smaller leaf pattern following the beading across the quilt. When I get it back from a friend, I will post it. Hopefully, you were also at the same retreat! JC

Oh - the same quilt!! I love it! Sadly, I was not at the same retreat. I can't wait to see pictures!!! Thanks so much for the ideas. I have less than a month to get it finished and picking out the quilting design is the hardest part for me!!

teacherbailey 06-08-2011 12:38 PM

I am a top maker and hate the quilting part of the whole process, but I wanted to chime in with how BEAUTIFUL this is, especially when you picked fabrics not knowing what they would turn out to be!!!!!!!

Thank you so much! I have to say that my LQS had a huge part in helping me pick the fabrics and I am thrilled with the results!!
