Need Help With Backing Fabric

2 Attachment(s)
Here are pics of my Crown Royal quilt top. I want to purchase wide quilt backing and am looking for color suggestions. Also, since the top is flannel would it be better to use cotton instead of flannel backing so it won't be quite so heavy. That's what I am thinking. Please help me decide.
Thanks, Nancy

flannel? is that real Crown Royal bags or purchased fabric? Just wondering. I'm making blocks with Nu-suede and think I will have to put fusible interfacing on the back of them. I would think cotton backing would work well with your quilt. maybe a print since you have dark and light areas to quilt in. Great quilt!!!

pocoellie 07-03-2013 06:54 AM

Marshall's Dry Goods has very good prices and excellent customer service, or at least that's been my experience. Great looking top.

mighty 07-03-2013 06:59 AM

I agree try Marshall's. Beautiful quilt!!!!!

Flannel back will add weight but it will be nice and warm. Thousands of bolts has many wide backs to choose from

so does Hancocks of Paducah (more expensive)

Edited to add that your quilt came out very pretty.

omacookie 07-03-2013 07:24 AM

Did you empty ALL those bottles????? It is beautiful. I would use cotton backing in a purple and white print..... Hugs

alisonquilts 07-03-2013 07:57 AM

Personally, I'd go with cotton because of the weight, but if you need further flannel resources I have discovered a site called Flannel World (which makes me giggle, a bit). I haven't ordered from them yet, so I cannot attest to their serveice etc, but they have a good selection!

You did a wonderful job on your Crown Royal top. I would check out wide backs in both cotton and flannel and go with the colour that matches the top the best. If you are machine quilting than you could use flannel or cotton.

Holice 07-03-2013 09:04 AM

Depends on how heavy you want it to be.

Yes it is real bags, and I had a bunch that we had indeed emptied ourselves over a span of a number of years. However, once I determined what pattern I wanted to use I bought some in bulk off ebay to supplement my collection.

Grandma Nancy 07-03-2013 10:14 AM

I love all the responses, but what color of backing do you think I should use?

nannyrick 07-03-2013 10:14 AM

That is gorgeous. I love it. I would use a cotton backing, but as others have said, if you want extra warmth, use the flannel. Whatever you choose, I,m sure it will be awesome>

Painiacs 07-03-2013 10:20 AM

cream color? If you want wide backing there is a member of the qb that sells wide backing. Just saying... :)

cassiemae 07-03-2013 11:42 AM

Your quilt top is BEAUTIFUL.

ckcowl 07-03-2013 11:56 AM

fabric.com has a wide variety of wide backing fabrics- regular cottons and flannels- and free shipping at the $35 point. I've been buying almost all of my backings from them for over 10 years...great choices- good prices- good customer service.

I like this purple for the back. I like to be able to match top and bottom threads and still be able to hide as many of my flubs as possible!

M.I.Late 07-03-2013 12:53 PM

I would suggest a purple and white floral that has green leaves in it and back it with that. Love, love, love this quilt.

Jan in VA 07-03-2013 02:31 PM

Crown Royal gold for the back! Maybe with bits of purple and white/cream.

This is one of the better CR bag quilts I've ever seen; way to go!

MadQuilter 07-03-2013 02:42 PM

I'd go with a gold backing. (OK, creamy-beige if youcan't get gold.)

amelia0607 07-03-2013 03:00 PM

Personally, I would go with something closer to the light color in the quilt. If you wanted to go with flannel, could you use a lightweight/thinner batting?

paoberle 07-04-2013 04:01 AM

I like for my backing to be a surprise, something that you would not expect when looking at the top. I would use some type of a small print in a color you would not expect. Whether or not to use cotton or flannel depends on how heavy a quilt you want and like. You probably have a larger choice of material in cotton. The quilt is beautiful.

nabobw 07-04-2013 04:39 AM

I like the way you did the quilt

homebody323 07-04-2013 04:59 AM

I didn't notice if anyone mentioned the WideBacks site. When I started reading thought your question was about color. My advice is pick a color to match or blend with whatever color you want to quilt it in. Hides any boo boos.
I'm expecting a customer to bring me crown royal bags for a quilt he wants. I love your choice of design.
Happy Stitching

I vote for cotton.

Gorgeous quilt!!!!

Mornigstar 07-04-2013 07:12 AM

Gee, that's 2 in one week that I have seen. Special to me as I plan to make one for my brother. All the suggestions re backing is helpful to me too. Never knew other people also saw " a quilt" with the bags. I would like to find a way to use the whole front of the bag with the gold stitiching. Have too many things on go right now to do a design anyway. good luck with backing.

cpcarolyn 07-04-2013 07:23 AM

Great quilt.

GrannyFitz4 07-04-2013 07:41 AM

Joanne's.com and Nancy's Notions have nice wide backings at a reasonable price. I would also go with a cotton in blue and white print.

Friday1961 07-04-2013 07:58 AM

Beautiful top! No suggestions about the back except a not too tiny purple and white print.

DebbE 07-04-2013 08:21 AM

Lovely quilt top! I'd look at some prints that have varying shades of purples and maybe small amounts of white -- depending on your taste, that could be florals, a nice multi woven plaid, multi colored circles, or even an off white plain....either cotton or flannel would be good, depending on how you intend to use the quilt after its done.

matraina 07-04-2013 08:28 AM

Can't help with your question but I love your quilt and colors.

IBQUILTIN 07-04-2013 09:13 AM

Lovely quilt. The colors are striking. Personally, I would use flannel for the backing

twinkie 07-04-2013 11:48 AM

I would think a lavender would be very nice for this.

franklindixie 07-04-2013 06:21 PM

great quilt. If you pre-wash fabric, it doesn't really matter what combos you use -- flannel, cotton, whatever. But if you didn't pre-wash, I'd suggest you pick a flannel in a similar weight/thread count to the top. this way it all shrinks together later on. Good luck.

I love your pattern, is this your own design? or did you find this pattern somewhere. I have loads of purple, no crown royals fabric, just regular cotton, and would love to do some of my purples in this design. Would you share the pattern please? That turned out so pretty.

justflyingin 07-04-2013 08:22 PM

It's a beautiful top, but I didn't know what Crown Royal was. I had to google Crown Royal bags and then to find out what went in them. ;)

raksmum 07-04-2013 09:37 PM

Great quilt! Love the pattern!

There is a youtube video that I worked from. It is friendship star pattern so the crown royal in the center is 3 3/4" and the 8 blocks surrounding the crown royal (to make the one block) are hst's that finished at 3 3/4". The border is 3" of crown royal bags and then another pleated border. The flannel was a little more difficult to work with.

KarenR 07-05-2013 06:58 AM

Purple/cream backing would look nice.

My time 07-05-2013 07:24 AM

Oh man your so clever! This is really neat. A little harder to quilt through, but I love flannel back quilts. Cozy and warm, plus it doesn't slip around on the bed. A lavender colour backing would be really pretty on this very pretty quilt.
