Need help choosing back ground fabric ,Please

I started my Yorkie quilt, I originally had 5 prints that I bought but after laying it out. it just looked like I needed more, instead of buying more prints I decided to try printing some, I went to my friends site on FB and copied some pictures of her little Yorkis, (this is a surprise for her so didn't want to ask for photos of her little guy.) I had some June Tailor printable washable fabric sheets that I used. The pictures came out great, they are the little ones..
Now I am having a problem deciding which background to use. The one with the bones and colorfully was the fabric I bought for this project, but after seeing it laid out I was second guessing my decision, so I tried laying the photo out on some other fabric. I didn't know if the bone fabric was to busy and that's why I am trying solid fabric .. Which one do you think I should use? Thanks so much.. I know that after it is quilted the solid fabric will look different but I still am undecided, and need your help.. Please Thanks |
I really like the solids. I agree with you that the print is too busy. What a darling quilt that's going to be!

I like the playful bones as the background. Also, I would like the head shot on the top line with the two smaller pictures and the other two big ones across the bottom. It just doesn't look balanced to me, like it is.
I like the first picture with the colorful bones and I also like that layout. I like the way the colors bring out the fairy wings and flowers in the pictures. Nice job.
I like the bones fabric. The pictures show off nicely and it is complimentary and cute
I vote for the colorful bone fabric with the layout you have on it.
I vote for the colourful fabric. Makes the pictures really pop!
Oh no, I love the first one. :oseriously it gives it POP. neutrals are not always the answer. Your choice though.
I like the last choice. the pale solid washes out the pictures
I like the colorful bones fabric the best. It really makes the pictures pop.
My vote is for the bones first and the dark solid second.
But what fun no matter what you choose :) |
Another vote for the bones in the first picture. That is going to be one cute quilt. I predict your friend will cry when she sees what you've made for her.
I hope she will like it, she lives in Canada so I will be shipping it to her, I wish I could see her face when she gets it..especially when she see the pictures of her Yorkie.. Thanks for the help dunster..

I like the bones and the darker brown. The light solid is too light and blahhh/lifeless for me.
I think the first photo, background and layout are perfect. Ohhhh your friend is going to love this! Excellent job.
I definitely like the browns! I think it depends on which picture is your/her favorite. The darker one makes the yorkie face pop, but the lighter one brings out the sitting down/full body picture better.
If it's going to be a usable throw quilt, I'd go with the bones fabric. If it's supposed to be a photo gallery-type wall hanging then I'd choose the darker brown.
Your layout looks great. |
I vote for the bones. However, for the small pictures, I might frame them with a thin line of white. The large pictures have a nice big area of white around them and they show up very nicely.

Bones! And I like the use of black behind the pictures. What a cute little dog and the use of the pictures makes this a treasure. Glad you were able to find the bones for this project!
What a thoughtful gift! Love the bones - fun and colorful.
Playful colorful bones wins hands down!!! It's going to be a wonderful quilt!!
My first thought was the bones. It is playful and the photo really look 3-d to someone like me who rarely can see a 3-d effect! I love the layout as it stands. Your idea for this quilt is fantastic. You have presented another one of those things that I will just have to try!
I too like the colorful bones. I'd Love to have a Yorkie. Cute fabric.
Here is another vote for the colorful fabric. The bones are perfect.
I prefer the happy colorful dog bone print for your background. Your initial layout is great. I too have a friend with Yorkies, they are happy, little and lively pets. I am sure your friend will be both surprised and joyful that you have given her such a special gift.
I think the light brown is too light and really doesn't showcase the cute little dog. I feel that both the other ones work but for different reasons. I have one daughter who would only want the brown background. She always prefers the simplified look and it would blend in perfectly with her decor. But, another daughter would absolutely go nuts over the dog bones print. Yes, it is busy, but it is also so fun. So I think you should just think about your friend. What is he decor like? what type of clothes does she wear (solids or perky prints)? Another solution would be to use the brown for the front and the bones for the backing.
Darker brown for sure. I have 4 Yorkies and i would love to put them on a quilt but it would have to be the darker brown so the colours don't overwhelm them. Good luck.
I didn't read all the posts, so someone may have said this already. When I look at the bones fabric, all I see is a "blur". All of it just runs together. Neither the dogs or the background really grab your attention. The values all seem the same to me.
The second one with the light background really "pops" the dogs. You don't notice anything except the dogs, which I like. My second choice is the darker solid. Make what appeals to you, though. bkay |
I vote for the colorful bones fabric too!
My choices would be the beige or the brown for the background. It showcases the pictures better.
The smaller dogs not mounted on white get lost in the top photo and blend into the second background; the dark brown lets all the dogs pop, if you went them to be your focus.
I like the bones, but if you don’t use them, I like the brown solid better than the lighter fabric.

I vote for the colorful bone print.
My first thought after looking at the 3 choices was,"Hands down, go with the color!". I think it really makes the pictures POP. But then I read the other comments and I can see everyone else's point. So I thought about it once again and decided I still like the color. It just adds so much. My husband is a "beige solid" kind of guy and it hasn't changed over the years. I, on the other hand, have added more color in my life, clothes, decor, even my car. Whatever you choose, please post again when you finish. |
I like the print the other 2 are dull and boring, the print is fun
Thanks Eveyone... ther vote is in and it's the bone fabric, I really appreciate all your help on this. I'll post a picture when I am done with it.. A big thank you!
I like the last one which looks like a darker solid. I feel it shows off your photos which are adorable pictures of yorkies.
I think the bone fabric is too busy also. No matter what BG you chose your friend is going to be so thrilled to receive this beautiful gift. |
I love the first one. Looks so playful.
I also like the cheerfulness of the brightly colored bones. I like the layout you used on that fabric, too.
