Need Help duplicating barn quilt
1 Attachment(s)
My brother made a barn quilt for my sister-in-law. I'd like to convert it to a block pattern to make a table topper or wall hanging. I have no idea how to do so.....would any of you experts out there be able to enlighten me? Hopefully, I attached the picture :-)

It would be fairly easy to draft that into a 9, 12, 15, 18, 21, 24, 27 inch block -
|
I like it - it would make a great table topper or wall hanging.
Now I am a bit 'stuck' on how to ask the next questions - but here goes - Do you need extremely detailed directions/instructions - or are you okay with "shorthand" - such as 9-patch corners - it gets tricky for what to call the center side units - they are called so many different things - and the center unit can be constructed more than one way. You've been a member of The Quilting Board since 2011, so it looks like you've been interested in quilting for a while. |

because it is a 9 patch within a 9 patch, to get easy cutting sizes, i chose to go to 27".

Very pretty barn quilt, I can see why you'd like to draft it as a block.
|
Wonderful... Then would add 1/4 inch seam allowance on each block?

Wow, that quilt block is great! I've had fun looking for them in North Carolina while we are driving up from FL to ME. My husband even points out places where he thinks there should be some around here. Coming out of Asheville, we got lost once in a small town, and they were everywhere, on businesses as well as barns and garages. The quilt blocks and the scenery were the best part of getting lost, listening to the driver's frustration, not so much.

Your eye goes to the lightest part and that one on the left was oriented down instead of out. Thanks for fixing it. I think, but I could be wrong as I don't totally understand it yet, but EQ7 does that kind of stuff.

you are right, thanks for catching that

So as it turns out, not only was the coloring of that section wrong, but so was the 1/4 sq triangle wrong [the extra dot is where the old line was]. So here are the corrections
|
if you keen eyed members do not see any other errors, i'll post a pdf of the rotary cutting. please confirm
|
the link doesn't seem to work....
|
Make a photo copy of the pic and then cut out the blocks (9 patch). The area that might be giving you a bit of confusion is the corner block. Think of it as a mini 9 patch, not having the white 'L'. If you look at each block individually, it should make sense. There are only 3 different blocks, try looking at them one at a time and you should be ok.
|
Wow - thanks so much for this....now to determine the finished size I want to work with....don't want those center pieces too tiny :-)
Actually, when I printed it out and noticed the measurements, I am way ahead of the game if I leave it at 27" finished. |
QuiltnNan - You are a life saver!!! I really appreciate your help. Barb

keep in mind that this is for one block only, so you'll have to multiply by the number of blocks in your project |
Your brother did an awesome job making his barn quilt The color combination is beautiful..
|
Great directions. You don't need my input.
|
Nancy - I really appreciate the cutting PDF. Now to pull fabric and put this project on the top of the list. I'll share when finished. Barb

I see eight Boston Blocks. Four small and four large. There are four HST in the middle. The rest is just squares.
|
Thank you for the lovely block pattern. I can't wait to make it!

I see that some of the measurements include 3/16ths. What is your recommendation for accurately cutting this measurement if the rotary ruler is only marked off in 1/8th increments? |
Great block!!
Thanks QuiltnNan! |

Great question and what a lot of wonderful quilters to chime in with such detailed help. Love, love this site.

Nancy - wanted to let you know the pattern worked out Perfectly. Block and borders together and getting ready to quilt it. Everyone who has seen it so far just loves it. You are going to help make my sister in law very happy! I am going to try and post a picture, but haven't been very successful with that lately....Merry Christmas. Barb

Quilted Barn Quilt
1 Attachment(s)
Awhile back, I had asked for advice on how to turn a barn quilt my brother made for his wife, into a quilt top/wallhanging/table topper. A very generous member not only advised me, but she also provided cutting directions and charts. Attached should be the completed top before I start machine quilting it. I would never have been so successful on my own.....this is such a great sharing group!
|
Wow, your block turned out great! glad I could help
|
Wow, that turned out fantastic.
|
Draw it out on graph paper. It really helps me.
