Love the colors! Please show us when it is done.

I really agree with your choices and they will look great in this pattern. This is an extraordinary pattern and I cannot wait to see yours finished.

I don't have enough experience to judge if the selections are right for your quilt....If they aren't, please send them to me. They look good enough to eat.

Hi Linda,

I just had a class with Judy Niemeyer about a month ago. She helped me with the color selection by having me open several packages and then we just started making sets by pulling together ones that work well from each pack, making sure we went from light to dark. I just picked the sets that went well together and brought those to class. I showed them to Judy, she started picking colors (she loves to pick colors) and then I started picking as well. [She is a great teacher.]

All your sets look good. Pick 4 or 5 that you like best and make your sets out of those. How large is your quilt going to be?

I was able to find the suggested colors for the background and stars at online QS's.

I now have lots of loose strips to use for other projects, but her point was for me not to stuck to the colorways of the individual Bali Pop sets.

Love your fabric, can't wait to see it finished. Love the pattern but am afraid to tackle a wedding ring or star.

Love your selections and love red in a quilt.. pls show us the final product. :-P

Your fabrics are PERFECT! I love the pop of red - all quilts need a 'zinger' fabric, IMHO.

Love JN patterns - am working on one now. Enjoy the journey

I think your colur choices are lovely. I admire anyone who can make such nice selections. I always have a problem sorting out what colours go together, or don't.

To try to answer a few of the questions raised:

The fabrics shown are for the rings ONLY. I'm making a queen size that will have a 7 x 8 ring layout and requires 16 sets of color groupings, each with 8 different fabrics ranging from light to dark. I'll have to purchase yardage for the stars, background and backing. The background appears to be several different shades of cream, with the stars made up of black, dark blue, dark green, dark purple and dark raspberry.

I took out one set of the reds and toned down the other one by taking out the really bright reds and adding a couple with a darker tone. To substitute for the missing set of red, I added another set of brown/tans. If I can find enough 'subdued' reds, I may switch those.

As to Bali Pops, I purchased 6 or 7 sets some time ago and used some pieces for a couple of tote bags for my daughters. I started color selections with what was left of the Pops and pulled many FQs and half-yards from my stash, cutting a 2 1/2 strip from each. I put 26 color sets together and then whittled it down to 18, then to these 16. I think the final selections ended up being about 60% stash to 40% Bali Pops.

Thanks, everybody, for your constructive advice. I really appreciate your help as my "quilting buddies." You are the greatest -- and I REALLY mean that.

beautiful quilt and wonderful pattern. I like all your
choices, but as others mentioned, reds (and sometimes yellows) seem to always jump out at you.

KwiltyKahy 07-11-2011 02:04 PM

I think you did a great job. Will look forward to seeing pictures. I have Dereck Lockwood pattern on it's way and I hope I do as well picking my fabrics.

I like what you have picked out.

ube quilting 07-11-2011 05:23 PM

You have plenty of input. I just want to say Wow! you're good. Both groupings are wonderful. This is going to be one great quilt.
peace :D

sailsablazin 07-11-2011 06:39 PM

I think that the fabric selections are great. I would have trouble trying to place them in the quilt.
Notice that you do not have any neutrals yet...no white or beige or very light yellow...

nightquilter 07-11-2011 08:31 PM

The orange/red piece stands out a bit more. I would be careful with that one.The rest is great.

RobertaMarie 07-11-2011 08:59 PM

I love that pattern and your selection of fabrics and I think it will be drop dead beautiful. I wish I had the courage and confidence to tackle that project. It is absolutely stunning.
Sending thoughts of perfect working conditions, and happiness as you make this quilt, and please show us the finished product. I am rooting for you!!! Blessings. :)

jansquiltn 07-12-2011 01:41 AM

i agree the red does seem to jump at you. love the fabric and the pattern.

ladyredhawk 07-12-2011 01:55 AM

either one would be great that is most beautiful

Pieceful Quilter 07-12-2011 05:42 AM

Honestly, I like your fabric selections better than the finished quilt. The reds and oranges will give it so much life and movement. I wouldn't change a thing! your colors will not make a quilt like the one shown - it will be brighter - but more beautiful - in my HO.

colleen1978 07-12-2011 11:31 AM

Looks like perfect choices...your quilt will be beautiful!

adb75.im 07-13-2011 06:42 AM

So who is this quilt for? I haven't heard about another batik quilt. Love the design, a real step up from traditional ring.

adb75.im 07-13-2011 06:51 AM

My actual thoughts on the fabrics:
I like the red in the top row. Agree, use it for a few rings, but as a punch of color here and there. I think it stands out in the image because of the blues it is placed against. If between browns/neutrals, it wouldn't be as predominant.

On the bottom row, the second column (dark oranges) seems a bit off to me. You might play around a bit more with the order of the pieces. Also, I think you need one more in this row that is a shade lighter than your lightest - the rest of the columns seem to go a bit lighter.

But overall, yeah, this quilt will be bold and really fantastic. Will this be your first foray into those super sharp points?

dotski 07-14-2011 12:45 PM

nice selection..that must have taken forever. please post finished pic's.
