Hi there, I had saved this pic, I think maybe from this board, because I really liked this quilt. I had the pattern for it in one of my magazines but since my big de-cluttering I can no longer find it (of course!). Does anyone know the name of the pattern? It's made like a sandwich of backing, batting and top and it's sewn and folded over so it's sort of a quilt as you go (if any of that makes sense??). Any help would be appreciated!
Thanks!
Evelyn

Sorry, can't help, but I'll be watching this post. Looks like a hexagon with circles added. I can picture in my mind how it could be done... but I would like to get a 'real' pattern. Lovely quilt.

bearspaws 05-27-2011 11:24 AM

I think it was like a hexagon with "petals" added (the white part in the pic) that you folded over. The middle was a hexagon without "petals" and the batting was a hexagon too. I'd like to know exactly how to do it though, and not be guessing LOL.

Mock cathedral window? Here's a youtube link from another post:

This one ends up being a square, but it could be modified to a hexagon.

Sewfine 05-27-2011 11:46 AM

Lovely quilt. Never seen it before. It looks like it is out of my league.

MadQuilter 05-27-2011 11:56 AM

It looks like each big circle is a complete sandwich (looks sort of like a round potholder). Then you mark the hexagon in the center and align along the hex edges. When you sew two lines together it leaves the two petals sticking up and when all the straight lines are sewn together, you sew down the petals. I know HOW to do it but I don't know where the pattern might be.

that looks like the circles quilt, robbing peter to pay paul or orange peel but this person figured a hexagon inside the circles rather than a square and folded the edges over. very interesting indeed.

Quiltcamp 05-27-2011 12:08 PM

Hope you find the pattern -- looks like a cute quilt..

QuiltnNan 05-27-2011 12:09 PM

looks like the one Kay Woods does that ends up as a square. it looks much better as hexes. Kay's is done by dividing the circle in 4 arcs. dividing to 6 arcs is easy enough with a compass.

BellaBoo 05-27-2011 12:20 PM

Most cathedral windows have four petals dividing, this one has three. Very different!

BellaBoo 05-27-2011 12:26 PM

I have the 9" hex die for the Go. and the different size circle die too. I could cut circles and sew it over the edges of the hexagon. I'd have a block with no backing unless I doubled the hexagon. Hmmmmmmmm something I need to try out.

ghostrider 05-27-2011 12:42 PM

I believe it's called a Hexagon Orange Peel. The folks that make the Curve Master sell a two piece template for it. http://www.justcurves.biz/shop/Cutti...range-Peel.htm

oops...missed the part about it being from a magazine and sort of qayg.

bearspaws 05-27-2011 01:04 PM

Found it! Thanks for all your suggestions, it's in Issue 82 of Quilting Today magazine. Phew! I thought it would look cool in batiks so I'm off to see if I can find some pre-cut batik squares somewhere...

Janetlmt 05-27-2011 01:07 PM

I copied that pattern. Eddie is the person who posted it in tutorials.

whinnytoo 05-27-2011 01:09 PM

Very nice ! would love to try this on a small project

jojosnana 05-27-2011 01:23 PM

REally a nice quilt.

Airwick156 05-27-2011 01:47 PM

Looks like Cathedral windows to me.

Edie has a nice tute on machine sewn Cath Windows. Does he also have this one with the hexagons? Couldn't find it.

Where can I find a copy of it? Doesn't have to be free! Is issue 82 and old one?

Thanks!

Oh, I looked it up and its from 2001! Oh, well!

Someone on ebay might have a copy. I bought my copy from the thrift store. I really like those old Quilting Today magazines, lots of cool patterns in them.

This tutorial on You Tube will show you how to do it with the circle magic ruler:

I learned this quickie technique many years ago while in Florida and it is called "Mo-Mo's Star" - have no idea who Mo-Mo is!!!

Rainbow 05-28-2011 05:15 AM

Like this one !!

Mornigstar 05-28-2011 05:18 AM

You never did say the name of the pattern for future reference although I wouldn't be making it. !!!

JeanLowe 05-28-2011 05:34 AM

I would love to find the pattern

sfguimaraes 05-28-2011 07:15 AM

Wonderful! I would love to make one for me!!! ;)

arimuse 05-28-2011 07:22 AM

its beautiful, I think Id like to make one. Id do it as a quilt as you go, and a sandwich of 2 circles and batt, (circle 1 - rite side out, layer batt shape on it, 2 circle rite side to batt, sew around outeredge, leave opening, turn, press, close.) Make a batch of finished circles first. Then, find the hex size to fit in the circle, (you can do all this on paper first to make a patt). Then just sew back to back, in this pic the backs are all white, in rows, press open and sew down the petals - I think that would work and it would be done when you got to the size you wanted sharet

This is exactly what I'm doing right now with a piece of paper. But it is not enough... doing this (I hope my "English" is understandable... LOL) what happens is that we have a smaller "white petal"...

Look: if we "open" the white petal, what results is not a circle...

It seems to me that we need to begin with a "flower 6 petal" shape...

What do you think???

Pat M. 05-28-2011 07:34 AM

You need the "Less Than Traditional" pattern Quilters Haven
POB 4873, Covina,CA 91723 or [email protected]
Here is their ph.#1 626 339 4788. I have made several of these
quilts and they are easy to make.

My engineering-to-be son gave me some explanations about how to make the tm
emplate... LOL

Lets try to see if I understood... LOL

May be I got the wrong place... because the one I found (link) finishes with the traditional 4 white petals:

http://quiltingwithcharlie.com/picts...ox-content.jpg

Couls you please send me the link with the template that allows me to finish with a 6-petal pattern like this one? heeeeelp! LOL

nativetexan 05-28-2011 07:56 AM

Pat, do you sew the folded "petals" together like you do when doing a square? I've done that but can't think how i'd sew the hexagon shape folds over together. unless i just slip stitch them as one would do with smaller hex's.

Theresa 05-28-2011 07:57 AM

I think I have the "original" design in Japanese...can you believe it? I started this quilt 20 years ago. Am handquilting...thus I don't work on it often enough. I'll probably be buried with all the sections! :-)

bearspaws 05-28-2011 08:18 AM

THe quilt in the magazine is called Blue Charm. That's just what the author of the article called it, she can't find out the real name for it either. The pattern piece is a hexagon shape with "petals" coming out of the sides of the hexagon, like how sfguimaraes drew it in the post above. The pattern says that the petals need a 1/8" seam allowance added for when you fold the petal down and stitch it, you need to turn under the edges, but the actual hexagon itself doesn't need a seam allowance because it's being tucked under the petals. So there are two pattern peices actually, a hexagon (for the batting and for the colored fabric) and a hexagon with petals added for the bottom white fabric. They have a copy of the magazine on ebay, I looked yesterday LOL.

You are right, a petal shape gives you a much lager petal shape when u fold it to the front. Just a plain circle doesn't give as much of a curved petal.

DONE! Thanks to my son!!! ;-)

I'll post 15 pictures... lets see if it is understandable...

The continuous line is the one to be followed...

Pay attention how small would be the petal, if we only have folded the circle in 6 parts... (it only works with the traditional 4 petals...)

You can print this picture, to have your template...

I hope it is understandable... but if you don't want to deal with all this geometry stuff, you can only print the 9th picture! Now, let's look for the fabric!!! LOL We still need the seam allowances, of course! :)

bearspaws 05-28-2011 08:39 AM

My pattern starts with a hexagon, then she shows to put the compass point in the middle of one of the sides of the hexagon and draw your half circle petal from there. If that makes sense LOL. That way the petal is big enough to fold over I guess. And dont forget to add a small seam allowance around the petals as well.

Theresa 05-28-2011 08:41 AM

Now I know why I should have taken geometry!
