Need help making a candy cane quilt border
My 8 year old granddaughter, and budding artist, colored a gingerbread man on paper. She gave me the picture with a note attached, "please make a doll quilt out of this". If she lived near me I would have her help me, but alas I'm on my own.
I have the brown gingerbread man on a red background (at her request). It is quilted and now looks fairly plain. I'd like make a candy cane border around the quilt. Any suggestions on how to go about making that type of border??? Thanks, Grammahunt |
sew a little bitty red piece to a little bitty white piece, then to a little bitty red piece, then to a little bitty white piece....seriously, sew long strips of your choice width - red to white to red to white, you can do 6-8 strips, then cut in the width desired, and sew end to end until you have enough for your border.
Or just use red/white striped fabric..... |
bias binding using a red and white striped fabric will work. Cutting on the bias will give you that diagonal stripe.

Perhaps appliqué the candy canes scattered around on a solid border?

I agree with DebraK, red and white striped fabric cut on the bias for binding.

I would use red & white striped fabric cut on the bias. Will be so cute with your gingerbread man.

Similar to this diagram (Which was drawn for a piano key border) you can piece it if you still want a border instead of binding.
Instead of straight cutting your cross strips, use one of the angle lines on your long ruler to angle the cuts. Join the strips for the length you need. Make your strip set from red and white of course.:D Jan in VA |
Jan's idea is a good one. You can vary the width of the strips for a candy cane effect. Skinny and fat strips would look good together.

Thank you. Excellent ideas. By Jove! I think I've got it!!

Can hardly wait to see it!
