I have a blanket stitch on my machine too and have used it on all my raw edge applique. I like the looks and I think it's easier than trying to turn the raw edge under.

I took a machine applique class this summer and the teacher's applique was beautiful. She taught us to do applique using invisible thread on top and colored on bottom. She used the smallest stitch possible and just barely caught the edge of the applique. Her work is outstanding. She used the freezer method so all her edges are turned. I haven't been able to try her method out yet but am hoping to soon. I did a quilt using Eddies method and it turned out very nice.

I go around my applique twice w/ black thread & straight stitch (free motion) to make it stand out and then a third time when I am quilting it. Have made many of them & I love how they look

This past year at the Padukah show I saw a woman demonstrate a method where she cut the green fabric on the bias in very thin strips. Then she painted Elmers glue (watered down) on to the wrong side of the fabric strip, folded over 1/3 of the edge ironing it with a tiny trowel shaped iron ( in the craft dept.) and then turned over the other 1/3 of the fabric on top of the first and ironed it down with the tiny iron. (hope you understand this) She produced beautiful turned under strips that were toothpick thin. They were amazing! Guess you could zig zag them down or do a running stitch over or even hand stitch them in place. I saw a lot of this application on the quilts in the show and wondered how the quilter could possibly have done this. Now I know.
