She left you with such a problem that I don't think she should have charged you anything. She should have known before she started if it would fit in her machine. She didn't fulfill her end of the bargain. Did she charge you the whole price she first quoted? If not, can you afford to have another LA er finish it with what you saved? I'm sure sorry for what has happened to you and hope that you can get it finished somehow. Hope you post a picture too! Good luck!

What a terrible deal. I hope her conscience is really bugging her!!!!!

My sympathies also on this huge snafu. If she quoted you a price, she has to stick with it. I hope you did not pay her the extra $50 that she demanded. This is very detrimental to her quilting business and I would spread the word. When word gets out, she won't have much business. I can't believe she only quilted the middle. That is just terrible.

MargeD 06-23-2011 10:13 AM

I think you have gotten some very good advice. I like the idea of writing down exactly what you want to say to her, think about it a day or two and then call her/write her whichever. Years ago I had an awful experience with a doctor, who was extremely rude, obnoxious and then dismissed me saying I was an overweight middle-aged woman whose pain was in her head. I wrote a letter, waited two weeks, still felt the same way, and after checking with one of the attorneys I worked for, sent it to the clinic's administrator. I got a formal apology, and when I saw another doctor in the same clinic, at the recommendation of a friend who had seen him, he told me he had read the letter and "Was told that I was to be very, very nice to you." I had never done that ever, but it sure felt good. Good luck.

Go to www.quiltingstencil.com. They have dozens of leaf stencils. After you get a stencil to your size, buy some Golden Threads tracing paper (at your LQS). Trace your stencil on the paper, then stack up 10-12 strips of the tracing paper the same size as your design. Staple them together. Take the thread out of your machine, then, using a #14-16 needle (to get large holes), drop your feed dogs and sew around the pattern. This will give you sheets and sheets of your pattern. Separate the sheets, pin them on your quilt and start quilting.

marla 06-23-2011 10:35 AM

That was wrong for her to do this to you and she should not have charged you, except for shipping it back to you. She broke her contract with you. And since you are moving there, you could pick it up at her place then.
You already paid her. but it would be good to find out why she couldn't complete it.
If the center is done, perhaps you can do FMQ or leaves on the rest of it. There are many good instructions on UTube. Practice on sandwiched pieces first, before doing it on yur quilt.

I'm confused, I have a longarm machine and I've never started in the middle of a quilt. I just finished one for my future son in law that was 108x108 and I still had room for more on each side.

burt and marys quilt pad 06-23-2011 10:40 AM

if you would pay for shipping we would do the side for you.

I have a Brother 1500s on a Gracy II frame that is only 103" wide. I am quilting my sister's queen size quilt, that is 93" X 104" The machine hits the clamps and it is impossible to sew smoothly on the sides. So I do the sides after the top, bottom and middle is finished. I turn the quilt and do as much as I can, then shift the quilt and finish the side border. Then turn it again and finish the other side border. This is a very frustrating and time consuming process. More than 2 weeks so far. Next time my sister will probably have to do the quilting herself.

watson's mom 06-23-2011 11:59 AM

Sorry for this mess. All LA quilters are not like this so you might want to look for one that comes highly recommended next time you need one quilted. I am looking forward to seeing it when it is done, sounds like a beauty.

sherry mcd 06-23-2011 12:28 PM

Would you mind telling us what the total amount paid was?

jolo 06-23-2011 01:31 PM

Boy did she get to you////// Stop payment immmediately on your check. Turn her in to the BBB if she is doing this as a business, pass the word around of her name and what she did. I would even take her to small claims court. You told her the correct measurement to begin with, she is the one who called a smaller size. OOOOOOh just reading it made me so angry.....

noahscats7 06-23-2011 02:19 PM

A lot of thought should go into your problem. What was her orig. quote? glenda

Thanks

I think you have the right idea. Since the center and two sides are done, it shouldn't be too hard. Just practice, practice and then go for it. I know it will still be a big job. This quilt will sure have a story! Good Luck!

luce321 06-23-2011 02:31 PM

What a terrible thing to happen to you. If she quoted you a price, then that is all you should have to pay. I think I would try to find someone else to quilt it. Good luck with it and let us know what happens.

I don't understand either. I'd tell her that I hired her to do a job.A whole job and nothing but a job!!

Pbecker 06-23-2011 03:04 PM

I do a lot of hand quilting, and I enjoy it. It really doesn't take that long, especially now that most of it's finished. At this point, I wouldn't worry about a frame. I'd put it in a hoop. You'd be surprised how quickly it can come together.

labtechkty 06-23-2011 03:09 PM

I live in Fla..who was this person and where is she so I can steer clear of her....

Dina 06-23-2011 03:18 PM

This is a terrible thing to happen, but how heartwarming to see all the offers to finish it for you. Most quilters are just great people!!!

BettyGee 06-23-2011 04:43 PM

So sorry this happened to you. Sure wouldn't pay the woman for not completing a task, any way you can stop payment on the check? It is way too large a task to undertake so I'd seek someone willing to complete the job properly.

That is all of no help whatsoever, but I hope you find someone to finish it for you. I'd be a very ticked off person.

Crabby Patty 06-23-2011 05:17 PM

Sounds like a claim for small claims court to me. How can someone give you a quote and not only not stand behind it but demand more money to boot? I think I would be doing a lot of "advertising" for this woman if it were me. I guess we're all too honest on here to do that. Good luck on finishing it.

Sew momma 06-23-2011 05:45 PM

Seams to me if she couldn't finish the quilt she should have given you a name of someone who could finish it for you and then returned some of your money. Hope you can tackle such a big job.

Thanks for all your concern and remarks.

If you can get it flat on a very large table or two church tables, you might be able to quilt it by putting the outside edge to the right of the needle, and machine quilting it in sections, within the outlines she has quilted already. Just practice a bit, and match the color of the top and bobbin thread she used.
I think, if you can get someone to help you by holding it, sitting in a chair close, you will indeed be able to get er done!

Lindach 06-24-2011 12:20 AM

I have someone who just pmd me and she lives near by.
Thank you

ConnieF 06-24-2011 01:56 AM

Excuse me but My question is why did you pay $50more and it was not even finished? And $50 more than what? But if she under quoited you that is her problem not yours. Hope you get ti all figured out. But best if you can find someone else to finishe it but it was already stretched on her frame and will be hard to get stretched the same on another machine.... Good luck

noveltyjunkie 06-24-2011 01:59 AM

I hope this thread will encourage board members to make sure they get what they pay for. It is sad to hear of someone being taken advantage of.

zazulka 06-24-2011 04:30 AM

Please, please, please look up Butler Country Crafts in Montana. This woman can help you. She has done at least 6 quilts for and just received 3 more to do for me. www.butlercountrycrafts.com her email is [email protected] Her name is Jeannie. Help is on the way.

Lindach 06-24-2011 06:06 AM

Thank you for your help. I live close to Indianapolis In. and MissDaisyDo, a member on our board lives close to Indianapolis so she has offered to help me out. I think that is very thoughtful of her. Hopefully we can work something. This is the greatest board!!!

QweenBee 06-24-2011 06:18 AM

If the quilt wasn't finished, she shouldn't have gotten paid anthing extra! She scammed you!! That is AWEFUL, I hope she is NOT on here! Did you get your quilt back? I would have only paid her for the work she performed, nothing extra unless she requested it day one!! That is sad, send "Charismah" a PM and mabe she can walk you through some steps to get this done. She is a FABULOUS LA Specialist, (I say she is)! You can look up her name in the search at the top, and look at the pictures she has quilted for others. I know she can help with some instructions, since that so called quilter scammed you!! HOW SAD, KARMA is ...

callie 06-24-2011 09:52 AM

Lindach-Am so proud of this board for being there for you & the lady who is close enough to help. I personally do not understand how people can do that sort of thing & like others, please don't get discouraged. If I make a quilt that size, because of the quilting limitations, I make it as a "quilt as you go" for future endeavors. I too am sorry this lady didn't do right by you and you have a kind heart by not disclosing who she is. The "but" behind this is - please don't let her do it to somebody else, because I know you wouldn't want them to be in a lurch. Please share your finished product - am anxious to see it and proud of you for hanging in there!

I agree with you. And this new quilter should not be expected to wrestle with a big quilt like this.

cae 06-25-2011 05:48 AM

I certainly would like twice before giving her a good recommendation!!!!

lucyb 06-26-2011 08:57 PM

Boy, that's like getting half a dress made or half your car or house painted and paying extra How about your sewing machine half fixed. I don't get it. I'm afraid I couldn't handle the fact that she just got frustrated because she was incompitent and made you pay extra for her frustration. Wow! Bad business and just bad work ethics. I hope she reads this blog.Sorry honey

lucyb 06-26-2011 09:02 PM

I'm still upset.Half a hair cut. half your gaull bladder removed, half a tooth pulled ,half a tatoo, your cat half spayed ,half your dinner served at a resturant must I go on? Some stop me please!

Joanne Regas 06-27-2011 05:28 PM

Shame on her but she's the one who has to look in the mirror each day and see the shame for cheating a nice customer. Go to www.patsythompson.com she is a wonderful quilter and with a regular machine. Go to education in her site and you will find great free videos and pdf patterns. Go slow and easy as the turtle and you will be the winner Joanne

Little Sue 4.9 06-29-2011 02:22 PM

So sorry to hear about your quilter problems. I just returned from Pa. with my quilt. My quilter is from Pa and I went there for two high school graduations. While there I had her quilt Lynn's Quilt. She quoted me a price and stuck to it . She had some problems with my quilt but she called me and made suggestions as to adjust the design and make it work. We had a label made . We went to pick it up and found out that she was not charging me for the label because the adjustment that was made used a lot of less stitching. She is on this board and I wouldn't use any one else. I trusted a stranger and came out with a true friend.

janb 06-29-2011 05:24 PM

I guess there are unscrupulous people in every field.
So sorry you were taken advantage of.

quilter1430 06-29-2011 05:33 PM

She should not have charged you a penny for this mess she made. I can understand if you bought the batting from her, but that's it. I know this sounds daunting, but I would take out all of the stitches and start new with a new longarm quilter. I've been a longarm quilter for 7 years and have taken out stitches on many quilts during this time. If you do go this route, I would lay the quilt on a table, pop the top threads, about every 1/2" apart, and then the bobbin threads should pull out easily. Put on some music or book on tape and the time will go by.
