When binding this last quilt, I had the misfortune of having one of the diagonal join seams come up exactly at the corner. I didn't know what else to do but work with it. Needless to say, it was not the neatest corner in the world; bulky and a bit messy. The quilt is fleece and for a 3 yr. old and he won't mind a bit. But my question is: What do you do if this happens when you are making a quilt that you want your corners to all be nice and attractive?
Thanks for your suggestions, in advance, smiles. I know you will offer lots of help. You are all so wonderful.

Ditter43 11-11-2010 12:31 PM

I had that happen just today! I saw what was going to happen before I got to the corner. I cut it several inches short of the corner and rejoined it there..... :D

np3 11-11-2010 12:32 PM

I always lay the binding out first before I start sewing and make sure that the diagonal seams aren't close to a corner. I play around until I like the placement and that determines where I start stitching. If need be, you can adjust the length of one of your strips.

PurplePassion 11-11-2010 12:34 PM

I try to check it out ahead and if it is going to line up that way, I will cut it off shorter and rejoin it . My corners are messy enough without have a big seam there.

EasyPeezy 11-11-2010 12:44 PM

Been there done that. Now I do what np3 does. Put a pin where you want to
start and just go around the whole quilt and check if any joints will be
at the corner. If so, move a bit until all corners are clear. :D

wildyard 11-11-2010 12:45 PM

LMBO!!! Planning Ahead, who woulda thunk it!! What a unique idea. DUH on me. LOL.
I was in such a hurry to finish this quilt and get it in the mail, and have so overextended myself the past several days, guess the fibrofog rolled in thicker than I realized.
Y'all are so great, even if you are having a good snicker behind your hands. I am having a good laugh here myself. The answer is so very obvious once one sees it.
I made this quilt for a 3yr. old boy who is related to my DGD's friend. He has cancer and starts treatment in less than a week, and I so want him to have his quilt before then. The label says, "For Ryan from Olivia and her family". She asked me to make it for him so he could be warm while he is sick. How could I not do it.

gale 11-11-2010 12:53 PM

That happened with my first wall size quilt. My first ever continuous binding. Now I do what the other do-check ahead to make sure all the corners are at least 4 or 5 inches from a seam.

Me, too.

I usually have the binding several inches longer than the required length to allow myself some wiggle room in case I need to do some adjusting at the corners.

dgsmom 11-11-2010 12:59 PM

that is so thoughtful of your dgd to think about taking care of someone else.

amma 11-11-2010 01:12 PM

I am not laughing at you, but with you  been there and done that too!!
Now I roughly lay it out before hand and try to get the joins laying towards the center of the sides, or atleast a ways away from the corners :D:D:D

sosewcrazy 11-11-2010 01:27 PM

Hey Wildyard, I wouldn't have thought about planning ahead, either! Thanks for letting me learn from you.

clem55 11-11-2010 01:40 PM

Yep! I wouldn't have thought about it either!

MadQuilter 11-11-2010 01:50 PM

I planned ahead the other day and made sure that no miters would align on the corners. Should have taken it one step further to make sure that I wasn't going to be 1/4" (NO KIDDING!) short.

dellareya 11-11-2010 01:52 PM

I always try to do a "test run" with my binding. I pin it all around to make sure I don't run into the corner problem. If I have a problem at a corner I readjust my starting point.

What a great idea that is. I have to remember it the next time I bind anything as that will solve the problem for me.

That is what I would do.

I never thought about doing that. Thanks for the tip.

jemma 11-11-2010 03:12 PM

my first binding[luckily on a smalish wall hanging]2 of the corners had a join landing-- i tried very hard to fudge it but it looked terrible so so after my reverse sewing wrecked the binding i cut another piece much better colour too--i think i learn better from my mistakes

whinnytoo 11-11-2010 03:14 PM

and speaking of bindings,,,,, does anyone know of a neat way to do 'odd angles' on bindings?
I can do the 90degree corners just fine,,,,, but made some of the table runners using the 60 degree ruler and am having trouble figuring those angles for binding! HELP!!!!

donnajean 11-11-2010 03:15 PM

I lay the quilt out & then loosly pin the binding to the quilt top just to make sure that I won't have a seam ending up at a corner when attaching the binding.

That sounds like the best solution, Ditter. I have had this happen, too, and just struggled to get it as good as I could. Next time I'll trim and re-attach. That's a much better idea.

wildyard 11-11-2010 03:31 PM

Dear amma, never would I think you would be doing anything but laughing with me!!
I guess I really have been lucky that none of my bindings had this corner problem before today. Especially since I never gave it a single thought. LOL.
I love having all of you to learn from, and with. Even more I love having you to laugh with!!
Hugs and smiles, wildlinda

Odd angles you just do the same. Just turn the corner the same way, making the fold line up with the corner you are turning. I don't know how to explain it, but just try it a couple of ways and you'll see that it works.

Here's a tutorial for binding odd angles:

Sorry I deleted the other link.

I think every quilt I've done has had one corner at a seam binding join. You do enough of them and it becomes easy--and expected. By the time I get to the binding I'm ready to take my chances and hope I get lucky--not very. :)

This is what I do also!!!

PMY in QCA-IL 11-11-2010 07:26 PM

Probably most of us have learned the hard way!! I, too, roughly lay my binding around the quilt and adjust my beginning point to avoid binding seams at the corners.

littlehud 11-11-2010 07:33 PM

I'm so glad you asked this. I have done that too. You helped get my unasked question answered.

karenfae 11-11-2010 07:35 PM

if that happens to me and it has I go back about 12 or 18 inches from the corner and cut my binding and reattach so I do not have the seam in the corner. Yes it takes a couple extra minutes but we aren't in that big of a rush are we?

karenfae 11-11-2010 07:38 PM

I just read through a lot of the answers to your post and see you posted you are making the quilt for a sick child - I'm sorry I said no need to rush - in this case there was a reason for the rush! Hope the little one has good luck with his treatment.

gzuslivz 11-11-2010 07:53 PM

I have found that the binding clips (they look like hair clips) work VERY well. I was always poking myself with pins all the way around the quilt. Now I use the clips and I am a happy binder!

Talk about charma...I have NEVER had this happen to me before..but I sat down tonight to do a little mini thing and guess what?? Yep! Seam in the corner. I HAD to laugh...there are SOME things ladies that we just don't need to share! =D.. I too did the best I could but talk about a sloppy job!

Did you read this thread before or after doing your binding? :)

whinnytoo 11-12-2010 05:11 AM

thank you so much!! Will go do those bindings today.

Tinabodina 11-12-2010 05:23 AM

One time was enough for me. Now I pin my binding before I start stitching. Takes more time, but I still have my mind, maybe.

Before...and I started laughing when my binding seam ended up in the corner. It was just a little quilty for myself so I didn't really care..I just thought it was funny. =)

deema 11-12-2010 07:08 AM

I haven't had this happen...yet. lol I don't pin or attach my binding at all when I'm sewing it to the front, so I just check the corner as I get closer to it and make sure there will be no seams. Since there hasn't been one yet, I hadn't thought about what I would do! hahaha I guess I would do like ditter said and just cut and re-attach the strip to avoid it.

LOL Don't worry, same thing happened to me. Some of us have to learn the hard way. :D

As long as you have lots of binding that's fine. The other day I had JUST
enough binding and if I had to make one cut I would have been short.
So that's one thing to consider. :-)
