i did one with my left over checks and plaids.

I used EQ-5 and made a paper-pieced train with applique circus animals. There were many p-pieced trees too.
|
Call him Jack ... and take all the ideas from the other thread about All Things Jack!
|
Just any pattern, but very bright colors - that's what I did for our grandson. When he got older I made q uilt with the very hungry caterpillar. Now he is 6 and I'll make a quilt with trucks.

Trucks or teddy bears
|
brights, trucks, balls, trains etc, and solids. Maybe think about what activities the parents like since they really are the ones that will be looking at it.
|
Monkeys are really big right now. Baby quilts are actually hard for me since my boy is 18, but I've decided recently to do up some to ship off other places and have actually bought the main fabric first that I liked and then decided on what pattern to use and went back and got what I wanted to coordinate with it.

Cars, trucks, dinosaurs, zoo animals, fish, etc. I made wildlife(deer, bears, moose, etc. for one of my great grandsons.)
|
I am getting ready to do one with jungle animals. Lots of that kind of fabric at JoAnn's in the baby fabric. Also, bugs, dinosaurs, cars, trucks etc.
The pattern I am using will be 9 patch block alternated with a snowball block. The snowball block will have different jungle animals embroidered in each one. Then the back will be fabric that is an all over jungle print. Good luck, be sure to post your finished quilt. Congrats on the new grandson!!! |
How bout cowboys or something western.
|
Trains, planes, & automobiles

You can have everything if you make an I Spy quilt for your baby boy quilt!!!! And when he is older you and his parents can have fun playing the game with him on it.
Here is a pic of the last one I made for a baby boy. :D the I Spy front the back |
When I do a quilt for a baby, I try not to make it too babyish (is that a word?).
The quilt will be adored by mother but as child becomes older he will not want his friends to see that he has a 'baby' quilt. Make something that can be placed in his room and become a part of the scenery and enjoyed for many, many years and not shoved into a box and put away. |

The first was done in various blues and appliqued sailboats for a co-worker. The second was also for a co-worker, she didn't want to know the sex so it was just bright. The third was also for a co-worker. 1 and 3 were for boys.

Check Quilter's Cache - 12" blocks. I am working on Pinwheel #7 right now for a little boy baby. It is darling. Usiing fabric with teeny tiny little dragon flies on it and some swirly fabric in oranges, purples and deep rose colors (perfectly matches the bugs!!!!). There are a lot of ideas there.
Good luck and isn't making baby quilts a lot of fun? My next one is the Depression pattern and I am making an "I Spy" design on it for a little girl baby with puppies, and apples, and acorns and all different things - usable later to teach the child "I Spy". Edie |
Use my avatar. Hugs and Kisses for Linus Quilts. I made 4 paper piecing. And if he becomes a she it won't matter( I had one that did!)

Rubber Duckies!!!
|
You could do the little boy one that goes with Sun Bonnet Sue..he's in soft bib overalls and a hat and has different items with him like a ball, a bat, a dog, a duck, a bucket, etc. His bib and shirts would be different colors

toy trucks, blocks (alphabet), I made my grandson a quilt with farm animals

I like making a baby trip around the world using receiving blankets and backing them with flannel. I like finding the blankets in sets of 4 and cut 5 inch squares out of each blanket and when put all together, it makes a nice sized baby quilt. I do a double layer of low loft batting and tie it at the intersections.

I made a rag quilt. I used different kinds of prints for the front; trucks, animals, I love grandma, etc. for the back I used pastels but you could use dark bold colors too. I then cut out appliques of butterfiles, frogs, etc and put them on the back. The reason for this was that the quilt makes a great item for them to lie on but for the first few months you might not want them lying on the fringe so I put the appliques on the back for them to have something to look at. It also gives you a place to sign it and put the childs name on it. The quilt was in the end reversible and it was very much used and loved by parents and child that recieved it.

I just took a class for the trip around the world with Norma Campbell. It's for the freedom twins for the injured soldiers. I only have the pattern for the size that is needed for them so do you have the pattern for a crib size one. I'd love to do that. I decided to take the Christmas material that I've been collecting for the past couple of years and make one called Santa's Sleigh Ride; some thing like that to indicate the trip around the world.

When I make a baby quilt, the only question I ask of the parents is what colors are you using in the room. Then I try to coordinate a quilt so it can be used (color coordinated) with the room. If they aren't sure, I stay away from blues and pinks. I have fabric for my next one and it will be done in soft greens and peach. Pattern - undecided.

The "I Spy" quilt is really cute! Good way to use your scraps!

I make appliqued quilts for babies. The patterns are available here http://www.ginghamgoosepatterns.com/...?dir_cat=11637

Tractors, toys, Mickey Mouse, fish, boats

I always like to choose a favorite children's book and make a quilt based on the story. Then you can give the book and the quilt. Later you get to share the story with the quilt recipient.
