And his truck cost how much? And he will replace it when? You can see where I am going with this......

But I do think that if you connect your worth to the price of a sewing machine, that's a connection that will bring you little but sorrow. |
They are cheaper now than when I bought mine 18 months ago - but - I still feel it was worth the price. I have sewed and sewed and sewed (at least 50 tops for Linus Connection) and haven't had any trouble at all. I know nothing about machines but was told by a few people that it is the best so I just did it. After my husband kept up-grading our computer I figured a new machine was an okay choice for me. YOU WILL LOVE IT!

Sometimes if you wait till the last day fo the quilt show, they don't want to take the demo machines back so they really cut the prices on the demo machines.

It might be a fair comparison with the cost of his hobby? Does he have one that you can fairly compare?
PS: I have to pay nearly that much just for the repairs on my machine that died, so hope you are successful. |
When women buy sewing machines they need to shop like a man! Men choose their toys without hesitation...they buy what they want without rationalizing, justifying or agonizing...they recognize the importance of having the right tools and toys..they buy the best with little consideration as to how often they will use their purchases or how it might impact the family budget. This sewing machine will be your toy...it is an entertainment center and a stress buster...Think of all the positive reasons you want and need this machine...you are a worthy person with creativity, talents and skills. All this will be enhanced with a new sewing machine!!! Your pleasure in a good machine and the wonderful creations you produce with affect your self-esteem...You deserve not only a good machine but all the other equipment and notions. Just as we update vehicles, we who love to sew owe it to ourselves to experience the amazing features of the new sewing machines. YOU GO FOR IT GIRL! This information is from an article that I found in a magazine many years ago...The Creative Machine Newsletter and I have followed their advice to the letter for many years...I am on my 4th Bernina and frquently check their website to find out what's coming out next!!
I took my hubby to the demo of the machine with me. He say everything it did and matter of fact told me to get the Bernina 830E rather than a lower machine. I about fell of the chair.
I told him to come with me and give his input. It was a mojor decision and I just wanted is SUGGESTIONS. |
Do you earn money or do you work exclusively in the home? If you earn, can you take on extra work for more money and ask him to match it because it would make his lovely wife happy?
This is an extremely well built machine. When I got mine I took dh with me to check out the machines structure. The 6600 is all steel ball bearing! Awesome!!!!! Will last forever.
When my husband and I were dating, he would always say "But you're worth it" so you can tell him that..see what his reaction is. Six years ago, I purchased a used "Bernina" for one fourth the cost, and I just love it. Some gals trade sewing machines for better features on the machine, not because the machine is so old. My Bernina dealer is only a 45 minute drive from my home, so I have had no problems with my sewing machine that he can't handle. Good luck shopping, it's a big decision, what that will impact you for many years.

If you purchase a machine at a Quilt Show you may have to be very careful about learning if you can get lessons on running it.
My DH bought me the Janome 6500, 8 yrs ago for my birthday. It is a great machine and is still running strong. I use it nearly daily. I hope your husband will come on board with you.
Don't forget to shop the internet for good prices. Someone posted to check eBay but Overstock.com has a sale on the 6500 right now and Amazon.com has a better price (by $800.) than my local sewing machine store. Do some major shopping.
you might want to check out the Juki F600 it has all the same bells as the Janome you are looking at for half the price.
i paid $750 for my Juki F600 and i love it - i have 2 Juki machines and have never had a problem with either of them - i've never even had to fuss with the tension on them. |

both sexes can be free wheeling with their money and both sexes are fiscally responsible - it has nothing to do with gender and more to do with the personality type of the person. |
This is all great inspiration and advice - I thank you all!! I will check out overstock and amazon.com. I looked at the Juki machines (seem to be cheaper) but have not heard a lot about them.

Just a phrase I heard at work, from a new grandpa -no less..."Happy wife, happy life. If momma's not happy, no one's happy."
Go on the website and see if there are any coupon. I know Bernina has specials this time of the year. CHRISTMAS is coming too!
So sorry to hear about the demise of your machine. I know they become part of the family. And I don't think you have to convince your hubby that you are worth it, he's kept you around hasn't he? Convincing him that the 6600 is worth it is another story. Just tell him to think how happy you will be and then how happy he will be because you are happy! Good luck.

Offer to sell something that you want to get rid of, that way you can rationlize the cost better.
This quiltn' is pricy isnt it. It was easy for me. I quit smoking and took up quilting. I've spent ever dime of that cigarette money and then some LOL. |
Well I recently bought a new machine, and I took hubby with me to look at all the ones I had on my list. I had it narrowed down to 4, but of course it took us to 3 different stores, each carrying different brands. However I finally decided on a floor model, at a greatly reduced price. And it ended up being alot more than what I had orginally wanted. I made a list of the 5 most important things to me, and went shopping with that list. I took fabric along as well and tried them all out on that fabric.
Some were much more expensive, some were a tad less, however, when I finally decided, hubby was in agreement, and I was very happy. If you take them along, and have them sit thru the demo of the machine with you, they understand more about what each machine will do. Another thing, is have them pick it up. The one I decided on was very very heavy, and well built...so hubby was impressed with that as well. Purchasing a machine is similar to him purchasing tools, etc. You get what you pay for. If you buy a walmart screw driver and it breaks next week well your out of luck, however if you buy a Craftsman, you take it back and they replace it. And yes, Craftsman is more expensive, but it will last a lifetime. So compare warranties with him on the new machine as well. Good luck and I hope you end up with the machine your wanting. |
Do they have financing? My Bernina had 2 year interest free. And, mine was used. Someone wanted the new 830 so, I got her 730 with a year warranty and lessons.

Start higher and go lower! :) |
My DH is a wood crafter and he has learned from me and my working in hardware stores for many years, that it is cheaper in the long run to buy good quality on something you use all the time than to buy cheap and buy twice. Good equipment makes it easier, quicker, and less stressful when getting projects done. Less downtime with breakage.
Yes its going to be a expense but at the same time its an investment into something you enjoy. Is he one who likes to buy tools or equipment or collect spendy things? Compare it to one of these for all the pros and cons, just make sure its fair with the fighting terms!!!
We are retired, when I wanted $5000 for a long-arm and quilt frame I told my DH that he had 3 of each tool he even needed and I needed ONE tool. He said go for it if we have the money. I sure did. I am now owner of a Hinterberg Stretch frame and Voyager 17. Quilted (didn't make tops) 100 quilts for American Hero Quilts in 2011--check out their site!

I say suck up to your husband! Make him his special meal, fix the house the way he likes it, move the cat/dog out of his chair amd then slide it into conversation while he is watching football :) Just a thought.
I purchased my Janome for 1/2 the price including shipping from a company across the country. It had been their floor model, the last one of 100 that they had ordered. It was pristine and never has had a problem.
I simply told my husband you can buy and good long lasting machine now or a cheaper, less quality now and bay another in a few year. Simplified....pay now or pay later. either way you'll pay, Quilting is hard on a machine so you need one that will last several years thur serveral quilts
What I do when I have my heart set on a certain machine, I show him two others that would work (and cost more more more) then all of a sudden, yours looks like a good price.....works for me.
I love my Janome 6600. I wouldn't trade it for anything else. It is absolutely worth the cost. Sometimes you just have to bite the bullet and spend. Your husband will be glad to see a happy you, if you can posssibly swing it. Good luck.
We all have favorite brands,,,therefore "This is best" will pop up all over. Purchase the VERY BEST top of the line possible...Local dealer offering ful warrenty and service...Plus training FREE when YOU need it, not a once every two monthts workshop. Workshops are great to learn "the New". No matter the brand the store carries the service. I personally use babylock machines and love my Quattro Inovis 60000. Its running a emb design as I check my email..Have fun shopping and enjoy
I have the 6600, and I love it, I have seen them recently for 1000 dollars at a LQS.
I bought a Bernina 20 years ago, I'm still using it. I've gotten my money's worth from her.
I have other machines too and I use them too, but the Bernina1031 is still my favorite. Sharon W. in Texas |
I generally approach it from a tool standpoint . Men generally understand the value of a good tool. And to get a job done with the best results and the least frustration, your tools HAVE to be good.
I'm having a problem with this whole conversation. Yes, my husband and I discuss all major purchases but the bottom line is this: he decides which brand and how much to spend when it comes to things he is the exclusive one to use. I make the same decisions when it comes to what I use. It would never occur to me to 'ask'permission to buy a new machine. The conversation would be "This is the one I decided best fits my needs and budget." BTW.....that statement would be when I introduce him to my new machine. Let me also say that it isn't our practice to make purchases that are totally off the wall for us. Not even going to tell you my reaction to "convince him I'm worth it". Gloria Steinem would be speechless!
Discuss the financial aspects with your husband. Do you always make spending decisions together or do you need his permission? As an adult, intelligent, professional woman the final say should be yours.
I have a Janome 6600 and I love it
Thats a good idea, some shops will run show specials, it would be a good time to ask if they intend on having a sale.
