I am visiting a sister and her husband... I'd like to make a hostess gift for her.. she is a quilter too, so she has coaters, towels, wall hangings... does anyone have a suggestion for something quick and unique... thanks... Quilter 1234

QuiltMania 07-02-2011 12:51 PM

A little basket filled with fat quarters and a few patterns?

mmonohon 07-02-2011 12:53 PM

Anything that she doesn't buy for herself. I always have a list of things that I want but just never buy for myself (usually the latest gadget or book).

DebraK 07-02-2011 12:55 PM

A tote filled with some yummy goodies would be nice.

teacherbailey 07-02-2011 01:19 PM

I agree with the tote....a quickpieced patchwork tote in her favorite colors (so she'll reuse it) filled with either homemade goodies if you like to bake OR some gourmet goodies from a local shop would be perfect! We have a shop near us with lots of homemade jams/jellies/BBQ sauces and baked goods that I like to shop for things like this. OR, when we travel to other parts of the country, we take some Southern goodies like grits from a mill in the mountains and peach preserves with us. One sister insists on Martha White flour or her biscuits in Seattle are horrible....so we take that.

GwynR 07-02-2011 01:21 PM

A basket with FQ's or a jelly roll or maybe a couple of charm packs! Perhaps some thread in it... I am always running to the store for thread myself. Maybe a pretty little bag with a gift certificate to her favorite LQS.

lol, I can relate to the biscuit comment ;-)

A jacket for an oatmeal box that will turn it into a vase, a jacket for a champagne bottle or wine bottle, the actual bottle of wine, a quilted box to hold anything she wants, but filled with chocolates as a gift, shoe bags for when she travels.

Polliwog 07-02-2011 02:43 PM

Add to the above - a coffee/tea mug with coordinating mug rug.

Teacup 07-02-2011 02:47 PM

If she likes tea, how about a teabag wallet with some nice teabags to keep in her purse? Mamabird3 made a tutorial.

a bag
or a wall hanging about sisters

thimblebug6000 07-02-2011 04:50 PM

Special pillow cases?

lynnsim 07-02-2011 05:07 PM

I like the idea for the handmade tote, filled with local goodies.

Ditto, I KNOW this would me ME happy! :)

Tartan 07-02-2011 06:42 PM

Does she have a nice casserole taker? A purchased new pyrex dish (with a dessert in it) put into a pretty casserole carrier would make a nice gift.

quilting cat 07-02-2011 08:51 PM

I vote for a gadget she might not purchase for herself, along with a few FQ's.

Icon17 made these. They're full of fat quarters. Cute huh! And I'd say definitely unique. These jars are glass, but some stores (Kroeger) carries the plastic ones so look around and try to find the plastic jars (green lid)

Aren't these adorable

QuiltnLady1 07-02-2011 10:10 PM

Those jars are way cool!!

Mkotch 07-03-2011 03:07 AM

FQs in a basket get my vote.

Edie 07-03-2011 03:13 AM

How about a table runner? Edie

19angel52 07-03-2011 04:12 AM

Oh I like the idea of a nice basket with FQs....what quilter wouldn't love that!!!!!

piepatch 07-03-2011 04:17 AM

I like QuiltMania's idea of a little basket full of fat quarters, or maybe you could make her some mug rugs.

A hostess gift is typically something for the house, not just for the hostess to have for herself. I’d go with a good bottle of wine presented in a unique bag that you made. That way you could all enjoy the wine together and she’d have a special wine bag to use when she entertains.

There are lots of different patterns available online and you can make it uniquely ‘you’ with the fabric choices, embellishments, and the like. They are relatively quick and easy to make yet show a lot of thought. Add something that is especially meaningful to her…perhaps some wine glass charms that bring back memories you share. The charms make great embellishments and can be removed and used easily.

Have a great visit with your sister! :D

Jo Belmont 07-03-2011 05:32 AM

I'd be on top of the world with a basket of FQs.

quiltaroni 07-03-2011 05:50 AM

One can never have too many potholders especially quilted ones.

natalieg 07-03-2011 05:53 AM

I agree, the hostess gift should be a gift for the home. The wine bottle idea sounds like a great one! So does the casserole carrier. I just made my first one of those last month for a wedding. Super quick and easy!

Ramona Byrd 07-03-2011 05:58 AM

Just looking around my own kitchen and thinking what I would like...

An apron made in her kitchen colors and in a pattern you know she'll like. A Hot pad to match the apron. That wine bottle cover someone already mentioned, to match the apron.
I like the casserole carrier, matching the apron, one that's heavily insulated.

Not quilt related, but one of my old favorites is the scrubbable magnetic grocery pad that hangs on the side of my fridge.

cherrio 07-03-2011 05:58 AM

yep, I agree that a casserole and nice carrier or his and her aprons if they BBQ, oven mitts or if they do drink a wine bag . a basket with nice soaps and a set of hand towels. I personally think every 10 yrs of marriage should warrent a bridal shower to replace towels! lol

katlady3 07-03-2011 05:59 AM

Buy a pretty cup or mug & put fat quarters in it & make a little mug rug.

Vat 07-03-2011 06:03 AM

Start her a collection of mini quilts (12x12") to display one each month on a tabletop metal hanger. You could do one for her now and then and soon you would have one for each month of the year.

What about a Casserole Carrier, a quilted tote bag or reversible placemats ?

Here is a quick gift I made recently. It was well received. It is a little bag full of bags to take shopping with you instead of using plastic.

How about a casserole dish carrier with a dessert in the dish.

Hey, Craftygirl - I love, love this idea!

Blinkokr 07-03-2011 07:03 AM

Make her a pocketbook
Have a Blessed day

I'd like a little basket filled with all of the little things that we always could use more of - like beige thread, an extra blade for the rotary cutter, a pkg. of machine needles, a seam ripper and a homemade pin cushion made out of a special mug that will remind her of you every time she looks at it.

gemladi 07-03-2011 08:31 AM

I agree the latest gadget would be so well received. One thing I buy as a inexpensive gift and would alway love to receive are Generals White Chalk Marking Pencils.

Halo 07-03-2011 10:02 AM

How about a oven dress. They went over really well in this area. You can make it in colors to match her kitchen.
