Yo yo quilt!!??

Tartan 07-23-2015 09:57 AM

Redwork blocks? They have some great patterns out now.

sewbizgirl 07-23-2015 10:06 AM

How about hand quilting a quilt in a hoop? My current TV hand projects are knitting socks and crocheting an afghan for this winter...

JustAbitCrazy 07-23-2015 10:15 AM

Dear Jane!

Monale 07-23-2015 10:44 AM

I'm currently considering appliqué as my next hand project. Maybe Baltimore appliqué? The book "Mi Amor Legacy Appliqué" looks like it would make a stunning quilt. And it will keep me busy a while...

quiltsRfun 07-23-2015 10:44 AM

I'm hand sewing a Farmer's Wife.

quiltingcandy 07-23-2015 10:47 AM

What about a tumbling block quilt?

ManiacQuilter2 07-23-2015 12:44 PM

Have you looked at other PP options?? I have two friends that are working on different PP patterns. Both are flower variations. Have you tried a Clamshell?? Just a thought.

This is what I'm thinking about doing, because I HAVE to have a hand sewing project going. Saw a site that showed the hexagon divided into 3 diamonds, therefore making tumbling blocks! I think I wrote the link down somewhere, will see if I can find it, and come back and post it. I'm currently still doing hexies, right now a butterfly, have literally stacks of butterflys and flowers! LOL!

Jeanne S 07-23-2015 12:56 PM

Sorry, no help from me. I hate handwork except quilt bindings!

lynnie 07-23-2015 01:39 PM

I thought of a clamshell. that's how I joined this site yrs ago. I was looking for advice on a clamshell.
anyone have advice for doing one by hand? I'm open to suggestions?

Maureen NJ 07-23-2015 02:40 PM

How about some embroidery for a quilt. I love the ones by crabapple hill studio.

gram2five 07-23-2015 03:11 PM

What about a cathedral window? I'm sewing the squares by machine, joining them by machine, but doing the rest by hand. I love having handwork to do in the evenings.

lynnie 07-23-2015 03:13 PM

about 27 yrs ago, I made a cathedral window by hand
my windows were 1 1/2" came out pretty, where is it now???
Someone said clamshell, anyone know how to do that? do you baste the top curve and slip stitch it down?

luvspaper 07-23-2015 03:20 PM

My 2nd was a modified Lucy Boston Patches of the Cross (I haven't quilted it yet though)......my third is a hexi, but diamond-shaped. I still want to do an apple core and a clamshell, but those two both take a bit more preparation onto the papers than hexies or elongated hexies.....

Mdegenhart 07-23-2015 04:05 PM

I like doing Lemoyne stars by hand. Can never get the silly things to match up on the machine.

Judith1005 07-23-2015 04:11 PM

Here Lynnie, Great tutorial on this blog for Clamshells. Lots of great pictures also. http://browndirtcottage.blogspot.com...-tutorial.html

Chester the bunny 07-23-2015 04:34 PM

How about celtic quilt blocks? Or one large celtic design. There are a ton of patterns.

Judith1005 07-23-2015 05:23 PM

Another fun block that can be done by hand is the Orange Peel Block. Great scrappy. Here is a link to a blog that has a fabulous tutorial with lots of great pictures also. http://frame.bloglovin.com/?post=320...click=0&user=0 In fact, this lady makes it look so do able that I just may have to try it out. I love scrappys.

lynnie 07-23-2015 05:50 PM

Judith, thanks for the tutorial on the clamshells, that was kinda how I did it.

Your welcome. I book marked this thread for future reference. I just might want to try out the clamshells as well. That is a fabulous tutorial. Sorry, I couldn't offer any practical advice. I've never made a clamshell quilt.

kindleaddict63 07-23-2015 06:04 PM

Some great suggestions! I like to do applique blocks, though right now my cross stitch project has resurfaced along with a bit of Hardanger.

lynnie 07-23-2015 07:50 PM

started one when I joined the QB, never did anything with it. I think i'll drag it out tomorrow and see how it's going. when I did it, I appliqued the clamshells onto the backing and batting. I did the rest the way it was shown.

dottiequilts 07-24-2015 04:16 AM

Wool applique is a great hand project. Look on pinterest and you will find hundreds of ideas from pin cushions to couch pillows; table runners to quilts. It is very addictive, so watch out

What about Mickey DePre's hexies and other blocks (http://mdquilts.com/)? She has a lot of neat blocks.

mom-6 07-24-2015 09:01 AM

One that I did awhile back as a hand piecing project was an around the world quilt using 2-1/2" squares. I chose to do mine starting in the center and adding the squares in stairsteps around that dark center square. I used all different shades of green going from dark to light and back to dark. I did not paper piece. Since I wanted the diamond shape orientation, when it was as wide as I wanted, I started decreasing the # of squares per row until it was a single square of the color in each of the corners.
I'm out of state at the moment so can't post a picture until next month.

Thanks Geri, but this is Lynnie's thread, wasn't trying to hi-jack it, was just trying to help her get ideas. Thank you for sharing these links though.

The ice cream cone on this site is sooooo cute!

Get a good applique project going. I love to hand applique while watching TV, (or riding in the car with my husband driving) although I have to confess that in my 20's when I used to knit a lot, I would hold my knitting in my lap and pick up a few stitches when stopped at a red stop light. I know that was very dangerous, but I have reached my 80's still alive. Now I am all into quilting.

Bluebonnets 07-24-2015 03:19 PM

Hmmm...would it be grandmother's flower garden English paper piecing?

lynnie 07-24-2015 04:02 PM

saw the micky d stuff. love her castle walls, a lot of templates though.
I guess I need to rethink this, do I want a lot of pieces or just a few.
thanks for posting the sites for me to go see at.

I embroidered blocks to go into a quilt with blocks of other fabrics. The blocks are from pictures of hats and shoes. I've been working on them in a "Red Hat" style (just because I was looking for something fun and I liked the colors), the hats are big and fancy. So I have also been adding beads and sparkles. This will be a quilt that goes up for sale or a donation for an auction. Good luck

Right now Temecula Quilt is doing a little gems EPP. It's way cool and so much fun. The other thing they did last year was fussy cut stars using diamond EPP. Just a suggestions, but I love it.

Yeah! This is what I'd seen, called little gems, just like making a hexie flower, but instead of 7 hexies, each piece only has 5 sides, so it only takes 6 pieces, would be easy to lay out a hexie flower, and draw your own template, I might try this for some different looks. Anyway, here is the link. Thank you TexasSue!

I am attempting to learn hand applique. Lucked out and found a 2 block kit at thrift store for almost nothing, so I won't feel guilty if I goof up.
