need ideas for half square triangles...
I went on a half square triangle binge and made about 200 of them and they are 1.5 in blocks in just two fabrics - a light and a dark. I'd love to hear any ideas for what to make with these! Thanks much!

Mix them with squares for a Split 9 Patch from the free pattern tab at Bonnie Hunter's www.quiltville.blogspot.ca

I just won 279 HST at one of my guilds. They're 2 1/2" ones. This is what I'm doing with them - I'm just making it up as I go along! It will most likely be assymmetrical because I won them at the Modern Guild

Lori, your design is gorgeous! Do you have enough to keep going or are you starting to make your own to add to the design?
|
Love what you are doing Lori. I, too, have some HSTs to work with. They are 2 inch ones. I have about 300 of them, just from the quilt I'm making now. Have a bunch of others from different quilt tops. You know, those little corners you cut off..well, I can't stand to throw them away so I just make these little HSTs and tuck them away for later use. Yes, I have a sickness!:D

The Ocean Waves pattern uses lots of HST, and would good in scrappy too.

One method of making the Windblown block uses all half square triangles with two colors, this is the block I am working on. See block and instructions at link below.
http://www.quiltaholics.com/bom/windsq.htm The pattern I am using is called Windblown Shadows, from the book "The Thimbleberries Book of Quilts" by Lynette Jensen from 1998, but I am not doing the shadow effect of using a dark alternating block but rather constructing as shown in link. Another pattern is called Spinning Flowers from Fons and Porter's Love of Quilting magazine (Nov./Dec. 2014). http://www.fonsandporter.com/article...-quilt-project Hope you like one of these patterns. this is the windblown block from link above. |
There are so many beautiful star blocks made from HSTs. Also, chevron quilts are all HSTs.
|
Tartan: Thanks - and thanks for the nice link!
|
Lori - that is really cool - I've never seen them used that way! Thanks :)
|
Jeanne...that is amazing - great use of lots of hst's! Thanks!
|
Ditzyprints, That spinning flower quilt is so pretty! Thanks!
|
sewbizgirl - thanks for the ideas! By the way thanks for the link to your craftsy/etsy shops!
|
Add some squares and make Shoo Fly blocks!
|
as I found out, there endless possibilities for HST, have fun with them

Cybrarian, I'm not planning on making more. The brown ones are done and I have a bunch more of the red ones/aqua ones. After I add more white, it will be done.

these are some we made a long time ago. Basically any pattern you can make with Log Cabin blocks that are half and half, you can do with HST's.

I saved this some time ago |
I love patterns with HST. Here's one for you. You would have to modify your size, do math to work it, but it still give you another idea to play with. I love this pattern.http://www.windhamfabrics.net/images...thats_love.pdf

There are just so many patterns that are based on HST. I am working on a modern chevron that was in the recent quilt magazine.

Gorgeous! love the design

HST binge is an apt description. : ) I did something similar to try to cut into my stash of fat quarters. I cut 10 inch squares out of a bunch and made eight at a time (4.5 unfinished/4 finished). That way I'd have some building blocks for a variety of designs that use HSTs. I have over 200 now. I should probably get busy and make something!
I confess I did the same with the 4 at once Flying Geese blocks because they also get used in a ton of designs. I haven't used those either and I have over 200 in several different sizes. Maybe this is akin to having a stash of hexies ready to use? No concrete plans but there when you need them. Post pictures when you choose a design! |
Some quilt stores offer a "Buck a Block" using Thangles for making HST's. The blocks are all different ways to use your HST's and are fast and easy. Check them out. You could also check Quilter's Cache for blocks that use HST's.

I'll be watching this thread for ideas to put then together. |

Lori, Your quilt is going to be beautiful! You have a great eye for placement. Thanks for sharing.

Wow, great ideas for HST! What came to mind for me was the Bonnie Hunter mystery quilt from January this year. I made a ton of HST for that one and she finds clever ways to use them.

With HST that small I would make Tree of life scrappy. I am actually saving up scrappy 1.5 HST for just this pattern. Here is a link to a free pattern that uses that size.

I haven't gotten around to it yet, but I want to make "Buggy Wheels" that someone posted on this board sometime back. It's a scrappy carpenter wheel type pattern based on light and dark values. Simply type "Buggy Wheels" in the search box at the top of the page and it will take to to several pictures and instructions. It's really beautiful.
|
I found the post I was thinking of when I searched under "playing with HST" http://www.quiltingboard.com/picture...ls-t50718.html
|
Whichever pattern you choose, please post a picture once you have it pieced.
|
You are welcome Feathers-n-Fur! I am a newer quilter and always amazed when there are such different methods to piecing a block. I prefer HSTs, they are easy to make and piece. I too like MSQC and bought a jelly roll when it was the daily deal with no plans in mind :)

I love my Ocean Waves quilt. It's 1/2 squares in the 1,000's. I think I had 4,000 in mine because I used pinwheels in the border. I love Triangulations software so I just sewed them when I wanted a none thinking project. I have enough for another quilt.

Judi in Ohio. 4,000!
You must have laughed when we said we have less than 300. Maybe I should just keep making them instead of trying to use them just yet. That is a very nice example you posted. |
wow!!! and I thought 200 was a lot! :)
