My Son's girlfriend lives in Maryland and I want to make her a quilt, other than flannel backing I know nothing about making a quilt warm *LOL* so any idea's would be appreciated thanks Rita

fleece or minky for backing makes quilts extra warm too- also batting choices= there's wool, which is wonderful to work with-
cotton and poly blends all add extra warmth --

Fleece would probably be the warmest.

Warm and Natural with a flannel backing is nice. Unless you have LOTS of patience (which I don't) I wouldn't back a quilt in fleece. Its very stretchy and be a pain to work with. Wool would be the warmest, but yet the most expensive.

I love my quilt...it has flannel backing and I use it every morning and night...while I sit here with my laptop on the couch.

My favorite "warm" quilt is corduroy. Front is organized patchwork (for lack of better term), inside is flannel and backing is pieced corduroy. It is so warm and soft, too. We LOVE it!

My vote goes for fleece. We've done one with a fleece back and will make you sweat!

wool batting or Quilters Dream would work well

I use fleece for additional warmth. I spray baste it and have never had a problem machine quilting it. I've also used it as the batting for extra warmth for a chemo quilt.

Wool batting is very warm...Quilter's Dream wool is one you can machine quilt through...or if you have a carding mill anywhere near you a thicker wool batting can be gotten to tie through.
