need opinions for this comfort quilt:

I made these 9 patches with making a D9P my intention. But now that I'm ready to cut them, I laid them out first and kinda like the way they look as a 9P.
My main reluctance to leave them as a 9P is that I cut the squares at 5.5" and I'm thinking that's pretty big squares for a lap quilt 9 patch.
It should finish at about 50" square. If cut for the D9P, the squares will mostly be smaller so more fitting for a smaller quilt, I'm thinking.

What do you all think? I need to decide by Weds. so I can keep going on it.

QuiltnNan 06-16-2014 04:04 PM

i think it looks great the way it is and the size wouldn't be a problem for me

Jeanne S 06-16-2014 04:11 PM

Cute as is but I think it would also look great as D9P. Not much help I know.... ;o)

JustAbitCrazy 06-16-2014 04:17 PM

I like it the way it is, and I don't think 50" is too large at all for a lap quilt. Heck, I think I've made baby quilts that big. And I'm not from Texas, in case that's what you're thinkin'.

mhollifiel 06-16-2014 04:22 PM

Don't "fix" what ain't broke!!

redquilter 06-16-2014 04:43 PM

I think it looks great as is. I don't think the squares are too big at all.

dunster 06-16-2014 04:45 PM

I don't think the squares are too big, and it's cute as it is. I would call it good, quilt it, and go on to the next project.

Judith1005 06-16-2014 04:47 PM

I like the placement of the colors and prints. I like it as a Nine patch which is one of my favorite blocks. But, it would also look very nice and very different as a DP9. I think it would look busier. Either way, I would like it!

Teacup 06-16-2014 05:53 PM

How would it look on point?

Mariposa 06-16-2014 05:55 PM

Great mix of colors! It is terrific as it is!

Leslie333 06-16-2014 05:58 PM

I think it looks great the way it is now! It would also look great as a D9P, but would be more work. It's nice and clean the way it is. As far as the size, I don't think that is too big at all. Any way you do it the result will be nice!

DonnaPBradshaw 06-16-2014 06:16 PM

Why make it smaller? Keep it the way it is!

littlehud 06-16-2014 06:30 PM

I like it just the way it is.

Once again, Duncan has taken the words before I could type them. If you are pleased with what you see, sew it together, quilt it and bind it and then you can move onto your next project. !!

HillCountryGal 06-17-2014 05:34 AM

Agree with everyone else.
Let the next one be a D9P

AliKat 06-17-2014 06:20 AM

I received my comfort quilt after a not so interesting time in my life. I still use it as a nap quilt on my couch. So the larger size will be appreciated.

fatquarters 06-17-2014 06:26 AM

although I like it now, I think your first plan is the one I prefer. I think that you made the right placements of blocks to make a terrific d9p. I would keep chopping.

I know we are not a ton of help but it's true, it will be wonderful either way. Personally I would probably go ahead with the dp9 not because of size but because I tend to make busier quilts, and I love when a non quilter looks at it in awe thinking how hard it must of been. Hahah can't help it I kind of like the ego boost.

Tink's Mom 06-17-2014 06:56 AM

I really like it the way it is...maybe the quilt is trying to tell you to just stitch it together...lol

nvb50 06-17-2014 05:14 PM

I like it the way it is

sewbizgirl 06-17-2014 07:51 PM

How much more work do you want to do? It's great as is... You could make it a d9p but it would be like starting over, timewise. Both ways work, it's really a matter of how much more time and effort you want to put in it.

MadQuilter 06-17-2014 08:16 PM

I like the way the colors play together. DP9 might make it too busy.

bearisgray 06-17-2014 08:29 PM

I also like it the way you have it!

Lisa_wanna_b_quilter 06-17-2014 08:48 PM

You said yourself that you like it as it is. Why over think it? Many quilts start with one plan in mind and finish in another way. That's the fun and creativity of quilting. Go with it. Maybe your next project will be a D9P.

kathyquilts40 06-18-2014 02:30 AM

Like most of the other ladies, I would keep it as is and finish. You could do a dp9 on the next quilt.

2manyhobbies 06-18-2014 04:03 AM

It looks fine. So cheerful.

EmiliasNana 06-18-2014 04:43 AM

My quilting evolves as I proceed. You may have started with a D9P in mind, but as it progressed, you make a design change. Look at it this way. You couldn't have done it in reverse, so all is good. I agree with many others on the size. The bigger the better for a comfort quilt............even for a baby.

MargeD 06-18-2014 05:32 AM

It looks great just the way it is.

Geri B 06-18-2014 05:36 AM

Make one more of each block, cut into d9p and then see which you like better......

By cutting it into a D9P, you will lose 1/2 inch for each block. No big deal. And as for the work, when you see how cute it will be as a D9P, the work will seem like fun. Your quilt will be 2 inches shorter in length and 1 1/2 in less in width.

FroggyinTexas 06-18-2014 07:15 AM

I agree that "if it ain't broke, don't fix it.." Ain't nuthin here that looks broke to me. froggyintexas

I want to thank you all for taking the time to give me your considered opinions here. Billi you made me LOL! Geri B. you won the day with your advice to make a couple more blocks and try out the D9P! Such a simple suggestion, why didn't I think of that?
So that is just what I did, and I loved the results. Making comfort quilts is never work for me. I love the whole process and want each one to be the best it can be.
So here is the finished top photo and I'm on to layering and quilting.
Hugs and smiles of thanks to all you wonderful quilters!!!

MargaretH 06-18-2014 07:28 AM

It turned out beautiful..I love it:thumbup:

fangman 06-18-2014 07:39 AM

I like it just the way you layed it out.

maminstl 06-18-2014 07:50 AM

I really like it the way it is - personally, cutting it up more might make it a little too busy. I also think size is fine for a lap.

MaryMo 06-18-2014 07:53 AM

Love the way it turned out .... beautiful quilt perfect for loving.

grandme26 06-18-2014 09:14 AM

It looks great as is and a perfect size

fatquarters 06-18-2014 09:39 AM

oh I'm so glad you did the d9p. it looks much more interesting and has a nicer look overall

quilterpurpledog 06-18-2014 09:59 AM

It is very nice as it is. However, you are asking us to compare 'apples and oranges' because DP9 is a different pattern. That would be very nice also. Thus the question becomes: Do you want to be finished with this project and go on to another one or do you want to continue the design path and make another decision and execute it. Either way your current choices are great. Hummmm.

quilterpurpledog 06-18-2014 10:05 AM

Should I say 'opps'. I made my previous comment before I read all of the comments in the posts. Then, as I backed up through some more of them I saw how you had made the DP9 with your blocks. I really think it is just wonderful. I think it is worth the extra effort for design interest. Someone is going to have a warming treasure. I mull over design choices also and I think the outcome is worth the extra effort. Great job.
