So I bought my first sewing machine a couple of weeks ago. Since I bought the most machine I could afford, I didn't have money left for a table. And honestly, the husband and I didn't actually know where my sewing would even take place. We have finally settled on a corner of our bedroom. I won't have a ton of room, but I'd like to have a sturdy table and room to iron and have storage. What are my options? My budget is about $150-200. Am I dreaming?

if you could find a good used desk, you would have some storage of most used stuff. also a good chair--office chair is what I use.

I use a folding table when needed in front of my sewing machine. When I'm done, I fold it back up and place behind the door.

Is your hubby handy? If nothing else, you can buy (or re-purpose) table legs at a DIY then affix 1/2" plywood to the top. Cost should be under $100 to do this.

Low price option would be to purchase a couple of small drawer units of the right height (or two drawer file cabinets) and top them with a hollow core door. (Our local shop has seconds on the hollow core doors for less than $10.) That way you get a six foot by two or three foot work area, room for sewing, cutting and ironing. I made a removeable ironing surface from a 2'x2' scrap of thin plywood covered with 2 layers of cotton batting (or an old mattress pad would do, and topped it with the material you can get at the fabric store for ironing board covers.

That's the table I got. I ordered it from Walmart online, shipping was free to the Walmart nearest me, and I paid $119.00. It frequently goes on sale for $99.00. Here's my post on it.

check out auctions or estate sales - I found a huge and modern desk with a right-L on it for $5 at an auction. I took the right-L off of it because it wouldn't fit in my room, but the desk is perfect...gotta look at the multi use purposes of ordinary things.

I got mine at Walmart for $97 and had it put together in about an hour. The brand on mine was Sauder.

I'm investing in a Gidget...found it as low as 99.00 and you can sink your machine into it and make it level to table...adjustable tray and it fold flat to store under something...for me the LR couch.

I bought an old formica table at a yard sale. You can check auctions for them too. They tend to be slick, so the fabric doesn't sit on it when quilting, like it did on the wood table I had been using.

I have this table too and use it for my embroidery machine. It's really sturdy and comes from a company whose factory is here in northwest Ohio.

I have a small armoire computer desk that I have used in the past, depending on how much space I have to work with. My machine sits inside where a monitor should go. It has small shelves and a big file drawer below plus other space to stack fabrics etc. in. You pull the machine out easily and place it on the full width keyboard when sewing. At the end of the day, just slide it back into the cabinet and close the door. It works well if you have it in a room that you don't really want your sewing stuff to be out front and center in. Mine was under $200 at Walmart. Sauder Co. I believe. I've had it for about seven years now, moved it several times and it's still very sturdy.

I also like the Jonas desk. It has the slide out piece that is just enough lower that when you put your machine on it it would be the correct height. You could also just use it as the ironing station when working on blocks. No storage in it but you can buy matching file drawers or just use the plastic ones under the desk. Then have hubby install open shelves above for other storage. I bought a desk at a garage sale and my husband and I measured my sewing machine and cut out a hole for the sewing machine to set in and I had a desk. The desk has 3 drawers on one side and 2 drawers on the other, plenty of storage.

Check on http://www.govdeals.com then check in your county / township / etc. I got three solid wood office desks and a credenza for $37.00. All are in great shape and the perfect height for cutting, sewing, and ironing. ( I'm 5' 5").

All you have to do is set up an account and bid on your item...easy-peasy :)

I got a $30 table at IKEA and a $5 mini ironing board for piecing blocks. Works like a charm and money left over.

It is, isn't it? I am in the process of planning a sewing studio over the next several months...I am cruising the sites for ideas. You might try the same. When I had my smaller machine, my DH found an old sewing machine cabinet that was in pretty good shape, got it really cheap. Cut an opening for the machine and then put a lift in to put it up and down, but only put it level to top of table, never in the complete down position, so a bracket shelf would have worked. Perhaps you can find something like that.

I bought a used desk for 15.00 at the HFH Restore. I like it better than any sewing table I have seen. I plan on cutting a hole and recessing my machine, but have been too busy sewing.

I have this table also from Wal-mart a few years back for $99.00. It's a solid sturdy table.

I'm not sure but I'm going to measure it out tomorrow. I found the brown-black version for sale on my local craigslist tonight. If it'll fit it would be great. If not, I think I'm going with the cabinet! Thank you all for the advice!

Check your Goodwill, Thrift Store, Fela Market and Craig's list for used furniture. You should be able to find a good table, desk or sewing cabinet below $40.00. Take your machine measurements in case you find a sewig cabinet as not all machines will fit in all cabinets.

Check your local CLs. From time to time folks post items either free or very cheap. You may be able to pick up a desk that way.

Check out yard sales and Craig's list You can get very inexpensive desks, sewing tables or kitchen tables. I bought a very nice farm type kitchen table for 20.00, it's already in the sewing room.

I recently bought a neat table from Ikea. It looks like a drafting table, but has a small glass panel on one side- light source for PP? It has saw horse type legs to go with it, with pegs to adjust the height---so I can change heights for cutting or sewing. So it can work well in limited space. It comes in 3 pieces---tabletop, and 2 legs, easy to take down if I need to, or to move it elsewhere. I can do this myself, so don't have to wait for someone else to be around to help. $179.00 including tax. Well made! It comes in white, or birch. I had been looking for quite a while, and am so pleased!

if you frequent yard sales you may find one. check with lowes or home depot and find a discontinued counter top. Or if you keep a check on craig list you may find a used counter top. with the counter top you could just add legs. If you can (yard sales or advertised for one) find a used drafting table is really neat for limit space. you can adjust height, tilt and then fold up when finished.

I have a SewEzi table, machine is set down so level with table surface, and it will fold up to take to workshops (has two little wheels to pull along in it's carry bag (supplied). If you have more than one machine, you can buy more acrylic insets too.
