My best friend has asked me to make a quilt for her baby grandson that is expected in October. I need suggestions for a simple quilt as I haven't done anything but blocks so far (that quilt took 2 years to complete). Of course I was working then and now I've retired from "paid" working. I know some of you will come up with great suggestions. Thank you.

I like small Bowtie or Tumbling Blocks for baby quilts. Nine Patches or Four Patches are almost always a good choice for any quilts. Just make the pieces small for baby quilts.

"Take 5" is a simple quilt, it looks complicated, but it's super easy! I am making my second one, both have been for babies, but are big enough to last quite a while.

I like Warm Wishes
http://www.ashevillequiltguild.org/A...or%20Linus.pdf

Works great with a bigger print

Warm wishes is very easy.

A simple 4 patch block with an alternating block of a cute print would be good. There's so many cute prints out for babies and kids, and they're very colorful.

mom-6 06-11-2010 09:01 PM

The one I just did was a simple 6" square of focus fabric with 3" sashing and corner blocks, flannel backing folded over the front as binding. Tied with tiny 1/8" satin ribbon bows. Finished in less than 2 weeks, including two trips to Waco for fabric and then more fabric when I ran out cuz I didn't buy enough the first time, plus working 8 - 4:30 Tues - Thur, half a day on Friday and 12 hr days on the weekend.

Kay Wood's 6-hour Quilt was my first completed quilt. http://www.kayewood.com/item/6_Hour_..._Book/406/c60.

So easy and no hand work.

Also - here is a tutorial for the same type - but using pieced sections.

How about a mixed up nine patch? It is very simple to do and instead of joining the blocks together, use 4" solid colored strips for sashing in between the blocks and rows!

I was going to suggest the same thing, four patch or 9 patch with alternating block. I use the same fabric for the alternate block and one of the borders.
This one was out of stash, except for the backing.

Wow! That's very beautiful!

PunkQuilter 06-12-2010 04:55 AM

Get a charm pack, or cut 5" squares from your stash...sew 5 of them together that's row 1. Make a few more rows just like that and sew them together. Sew on a skinny border then a wider one, bind and done. Very quick and simple, no pattern necessary.

Quilt4u 06-12-2010 04:59 AM

That is a beautiful quilt.
How about a rail fance or a D9P.

CarrieAnne 06-12-2010 05:01 AM

Wow, what a great quilt!!!!!!!!!!

Ditto. I'd be afraid to let the baby spit up on that one! You really let the fabrics do the work for you! Great Job!

I am making a disappearing nine patch for a baby quilt for a friend of mine that is a Grandma for the first time. I am using 4 1/2 white strips for sashing in between the blocks, and Birdie charm squares (MODA) for the disappearing nine patch blocks. I also purchased a honey bun to frame the blocks with. Since it is for a litlle girl, I am using the pink, yellow and turqoise Birdie charm squares from 4 packages. It will be pretty when its done!
There will be enough left over to make an additional baby quilt for a little boy.

brushandthimble 06-12-2010 09:25 AM

Thank you for the compliments, it was an order placed through my DIL. just great creative with what is on hand.

AliKat 06-12-2010 09:38 AM

When I have a baby's quilt to make I frequently will use a panel for the center and then spice it up in the borders. It is quick and easy. Then I quilt around the designs in the panel.

One LQS had a great panel fabric with a book to go with it. That turned out really cute.

This Quick Strippie looks doable in a short time!

I hate to admit it but I don't know how or what a D9P is. I've done 9patch squares before in my first quilt. I found some fabric today with cute lambs for all seasons in it. Haven't decided yet on how to use them though.

oneygirl 06-12-2010 01:19 PM

A disappearing 9 patch is pretty simple, you make a traditional nine patch block, then make one cut diagonally through then center of the nine patch. Next you make another cut horizontally through the center of the nine patch. Then you take the four sections flip the blocks around until they are pleasing to the eye and sew the block back together. Finally, square off your block. Voila! It has become a disappearing nine patch...

Fabricnut 06-12-2010 06:08 PM

Thank you Oneygirl for the explaination. I'll have to try it soon. And I'll pay close attention to pictures posted of D9Ps. Heaven knows I have enough fabric to try out something new.

oneygirl 06-12-2010 07:03 PM

You can make it and it is fun and easy! Once you make one quilt, you can make another and vary it by adding 1 1/2" sashing in between the squares before you reconstruct them.
There are so many variations to what you can create after cutting your nine patch block in 4 sections!

LeslieSkelly 06-12-2010 07:33 PM

Try this pattern. It is simple and cute and a really nice size!! :-)

lazyquilter 06-12-2010 07:48 PM

the disapearing 9 patch really is easy once you get the hang f squaring up. Fortunately I had an instructor that was able to explain the easiest way to square the block and after that, it was a breeze. Actuaaly I have enough blocks completed that I will complete this particular quilt in the next two weeks after my two "panel" baby quilts are done. For the little girls crib quily, actually a little bigger, now that it's very close to be ready to be quilted, I found a 1/2 muted pink rickrack and I will use that for the inside of the very last border. I cheated and used three borders. So I will be using this item to cover the seam been the second and third border. It looks great, for me any way... there are some really swet ways to dress out a pretty or cute panel.

I LOVE it for baby quilts.

Fabricnut 06-13-2010 03:48 PM

Tippy: WOW that makes it look so easy. I have to try it now. Thank you for the instructions and pictures. I'm a very visual person.

I've made a couple of these for babies. Very quick and easy.

You didn't see this quilt from the Quilt show cabool?

Make a 9-Patch from bright colored childrens prints. Choose 2 colors, and strip piece. It will go together quickly.
No pattern required.

illinois 06-14-2010 04:26 AM

Rail Fence is quick and easy. My personal all-time favorite is an Irish Chain, aka 9patch with alternating plain block. But a really neat one is a Friendship Star, if you want to put a little more work into it by making the 1/2 sq triangles. If you are into making 1/2 sq triangles, pinwheels are a cute baby quilt, too. So many ideas, so little time!!!

JoAnn's has Madison baby quilt pattern on the "how to"
So pretty But I like the replies and will check them out too

I fell in love with the fabric, Alexander Henry 2005, Let's Play House", which was on the quiltedtaffy website listed in your message. I have been searching for it for 2 hours on the net. I cannot locate it anywhere. Any suggestions?

Thanks and have a great day!

Try this pattern. It is very easy and one I use a lot for baby quilts.

I have been doing rag baby quilts, can make one in a weekend. I got a little creative and started making the blankies to match.

4 Patch 1 Patch is quick and super easy, and can be so striking! Have you made a raggy quilt yet? Turning 20 Again? Or perhaps a Bargello, nothing simpler than that

Pic is sideways, those are kitties on the feature fabric. I used a 1/4 inch border around the feature fab to outline it better

SO easy, using large prints

A friend made this, I might have used a solid, dark red, narrow inner border on it

This is a simple way to make a really cute 9 patch. You start with 5 or 6 inch strips, make 4 patches and then subcut and resew into 9 patches.

Have you thought about doing a baby quick trip...takes 6 fat quarters and makes up very fast...very little to match...

Cardtrick is also very easy

Pinwheels are always fun for a baby - or snowballs. You can always do a 4-patch. All of these are simple to do. Good luck.
